Based in Gevrey-Chambertin, at the heart of the Côte de Nuits, Domaine Koji et Jae Hwa is one of the most exciting names in the new Burgundy. Founded in 2012 by Koji Nakada, a Japanese sommelier and oenologist, and his Korean wife Jae Hwa Park, already renowned for their négociant house Lou Dumont, this small 6-hectare estate, certified organic and farmed biodynamically, produces exclusive wines of crystalline purity. From the Bourgogne Vieilles Vignes made from vines planted in 1908 to the Gevrey-Chambertin, including the rare century-old Aligoté, each cuvée combines precision, airy finesse and deep expression of the Burgundian terroir.
The story begins in 1996, when Koji Nakada left Japan to study oenology in Beaune. To follow his courses, he first had to learn French in Dijon: it was there that he met Jae Hwa Park, a French teacher of Korean origin. Their instant connection became a life project. After training in Burgundy, Bordeaux, Alsace and Champagne, Koji founded in 2000, together with Jae Hwa, the Maison Lou Dumont in Gevrey-Chambertin: an elite négociant whose name combines Lou, their goddaughter, and the word mont, a tribute to the mountains of their home countries. The ideogram on the label — sky, earth and man — encapsulates their philosophy: the balance of natural elements as the condition for great wine.
In 2012, the couple fulfilled their dream by purchasing their first vines in Prémeaux-Prissey and at Clos La Brunelle, giving birth to Domaine Koji et Jae Hwa, established in the former cellars of Jean-Marie Fourrier's father. In 2016, the estate expanded with parcels in Marsannay, the Hautes Côtes de Nuits and Gevrey-Chambertin, and that same year obtained Organic Agriculture certification (Ecocert). Praised by international critics, the latest vintages have elevated this discreet estate to the ranks of Burgundy's rising stars.
The estate now spans 6 hectares spread across some of the finest clay-limestone terroirs of the Côte de Nuits and its heights: Gevrey-Chambertin, Marsannay (including the lieu-dit En Leautier), Prémeaux-Prissey, the Clos La Brunelle and the Hautes Côtes de Nuits. The true treasure of the property lies in its very old vines: a majority of Pinot Noir vines aged 50 to over 100 years, some planted in 1908, as well as a century-old Aligoté parcel.
The viticulture here is exemplary: certified organic farming since 2016, biodynamic practices since 2018 with respect for the lunar calendar and herbal infusions, horse ploughing on several parcels to preserve the soils, natural fertilisation and even free-range hens in the vines, which provide a natural means of pest control. This extreme attention to living things yields grapes of remarkable quality and balance.
In the cellar, Koji Nakada practises a nature-inspired winemaking approach with minimal intervention: rigorous manual sorting, high proportions of whole clusters (up to 80% depending on the cuvée), indigenous yeasts and very gentle extractions, more by infusion than extraction. The wines are aged in high-quality French oak barrels sourced from the Jupilles forest or crafted by the Chassin cooperage in Beaune, with a measured proportion of new oak in order to preserve fruit and minerality. The use of sulphur is reduced to the strict minimum, and certain cuvées have been bottled without added sulphur since the 2021 vintage. The result is airy, vibrant and saline wines of great digestibility, expressing each Burgundian climat with rare transparency.
Bourgogne Rouge Vieilles Vignes: the estate's emblematic cuvée, sourced from very old Pinot Noir vines aged 50 to 100 years, some planted in 1908, near Beaune. Produced at around 3,000 bottles per year, vinified with a large proportion of whole clusters, it delivers vibrant fruit, notes of rose and violet, and a saline finish reminiscent of the great wines of the Côte. Exceptional depth for a regional appellation.
Bourgogne Aligoté 1908: a rare white wine born from a century-old Aligoté parcel, planted in 1908. Taut, lemony and mineral, it proves brilliantly that this long-underestimated grape variety can reach great heights in the hands of a talented winemaker.
Gevrey-Chambertin: the wine from the couple's adopted village, a refined Pinot Noir with aromas of black cherry, blackcurrant and spices, endowed with the structure and depth characteristic of the appellation. A high-calibre village wine, built for ageing.
Marsannay En Leautier: sourced from this beautiful lieu-dit in the northern Côte de Nuits, this enchanting red blends aromas of violet, lilac and black cherry with a crystalline, fresh and delicately saline palate of remarkable precision.
Hautes Côtes de Nuits: born from the high-altitude hillsides that overlook the Côte, this fresh and elegant Pinot Noir captivates with its crunchy fruit, drinkability and energy, in a very pure style.
Coteaux Bourguignons Chardonnay: crafted from young vines planted in 2015 in Prémeaux, this white wine displays a pale gold colour and a delicately toasted nose with notes of sesame and candied lemon, in a register reminiscent of the great Burgundian barrel-aged wines.
Coteaux Bourguignons Pinot Gris La Violette: a confidential curiosity from the estate, vinified from Pinot Gris, a rare grape variety in Burgundy. Its caressing texture, ripe white fruits and fine noble bitterness make it a collector's cuvée.
Champagne Nakada Park: the couple's new venture in the Côte des Bar, in Champagne, which extends their quest for elegance and purity into the world of sparkling wines. A nascent and very limited production, already sought after by enthusiasts.
