History of Domaine Vincent Morey

The history of Domaine Vincent Morey is rooted in one of the most celebrated winemaking families of Chassagne-Montrachet. Vincent Morey, son of Bernard Morey, an iconic figure of the village, joined the family domaine in 1986 after studying at the Lycée Viticole de Beaune and a formative experience in Saint-Émilion, in the Bordeaux vineyard. With more than twenty years of experience, he took over part of the domaine when his father retired.

In 2006, Vincent joined forces with his wife Sophie, herself from a winemaking family in Santenay where, according to tradition, the vines are passed down from mother to daughter. Sophie had vinified her first vintage as early as 1986 at Domaine Ménager-Belland in Santenay. Together, they founded Domaine Vincent et Sophie Morey and produced their first harvest in 2007. Driven by a shared philosophy, they regard their vines as true gardens and remind us that a fine wine always begins with beautiful grapes, the fruit of constant attention and an ability to adapt vintage after vintage.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Vincent Morey

The terroir of Domaine Vincent Morey extends over approximately twenty hectares planted at the southern end of the Côte de Beaune, in the villages of Chassagne-Montrachet, Saint-Aubin, Puligny-Montrachet, Santenay and Cheilly-les-Maranges. These plots, situated on clay-limestone soils rich in minerals and well drained, offer a mosaic of climats and exposures ideal for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the two king grape varieties of Burgundy.

The domaine's finest climats, perched at altitude such as Les Embrazées or Les Caillerets, bring freshness and tension to the white wines, while the very old vines (some planted in the 1950s) confer depth and minerality. In the vineyard, the couple favours traditional and environmentally respectful methods, with sustainable viticulture, manual harvesting and great care given to soil health, in order to preserve the authentic expression of each terroir.

Winemaking at Domaine Vincent Morey

Winemaking at Domaine Vincent Morey perpetuates an artisanal expertise passed down from generation to generation. The grapes, harvested by hand at perfect ripeness, are vinified with rigour in respect of the fruit and the terroir. The Chardonnay white wines are gently pressed and then aged in oak barrels, with a measured proportion of new wood (often around 40 per cent for the old vines), on fine lees for several months.

This patient ageing yields whites combining roundness, richness and weight, balanced by a remarkable aromatic freshness and fine ageing potential. The Pinot Noir red wines, for their part, are vinified to express the finesse and elegance of the grape variety, with silky tannins, lovely freshness and aromas of red fruits. Vincent Morey also recommends decanting his young whites to reveal their full complexity. This meticulous work, from the vineyard to the bottling, is the recognisable signature of the domaine's cuvées.

The cuvées of Domaine Vincent Morey

Bourgogne Chardonnay: an entry-level cuvée brimming with freshness, taking you straight to Burgundy with its aromas of white fruits, pear and ripe citrus underscored by a subtle toasted note. An accessible and harmonious white wine.

Bourgogne Aligoté: a lively and thirst-quenching white wine made from the Aligoté grape variety, perfect as an aperitif, with a floral and citrusy profile that is typically Burgundian.

Bourgogne Rouge: a supple and fruity Pinot Noir, indulgent and easy to drink, expressing the delicacy of the region's signature black grape variety.

Santenay Les Hâtes Blanc: a charming village white wine, fresh and fruity, offering a beautiful introduction to the terroirs of Santenay.

Santenay 1er Cru Passetemps (White and Red): a premier cru offered in both colours. The white captivates with its finely oaked floral nose and its broad, fragrant palate with a deliciously lingering finish, while the red charms with its fruit and freshness.

Santenay 1er Cru Beaurepaire (White and Red): an elegant cuvée from Santenay, the red revealing notes of red fruits and peony with a supple and rounded palate.

Santenay 1er Cru Les Gravières Rouge: a renowned Pinot Noir premier cru, both structured and refined, marked by aromas of red fruits and a beautiful minerality.

Maranges 1er Cru La Fussière Rouge: a generous and fruity premier cru from Cheilly-les-Maranges, offering excellent value for pleasure and a lovely expression of Pinot Noir.

Chassagne-Montrachet Vieilles Vignes (White and Red): the domaine's flagship cuvée, sourced from very old vines. The white, aged partly in new oak, unfolds a chalky minerality, white-fleshed fruits, white flowers and a broad, vibrant and deep palate. The red, fleshy and silky, expresses the elegance of the village's Pinot Noir.

Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Embrazées: a premier cru perched at altitude on the border of Santenay, renowned for its balance between power and freshness, its citrus and white fruit character, and its lively finish with a subtle toasted edge.

Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Caillerets (En Cailleret): a great, firm and taut premier cru with a pronounced minerality and superb ageing potential, one of the finest white wines in the domaine's portfolio.

Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Baudines: a fresh and refined premier cru from a higher-altitude climat, with delicate notes of hazelnut and citrus and a silky texture, full of great charm.

Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot: a broad and deep premier cru from richer soils, yielding a powerful and structured white wine built for ageing.

Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge: a village-level red wine with a silky profile, centred on red fruit and freshness, showcasing the domaine's expertise with Pinot Noir.

Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Les Charmois: a premier cru from Saint-Aubin of great finesse, fresh and taut, offering an elegant expression of the great whites of the Côte de Beaune at an attractive price.

Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru La Truffière: a floral and refined premier cru from Puligny-Montrachet, with a fine and elegant palate underpinned by beautiful acidity, the hallmark of this great neighbouring terroir.

Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru: another premier cru from Puligny, precise and mineral, combining tension and elegance in the purest style of the village's white wines.

Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru: the domaine's crown jewel, one of the greatest white wines in the world. This Grand Cru, with its toasted and deeply mineral nose, combines power, richness and exceptional length, for an anthological Chardonnay destined for long ageing.
