Champagne Douge wines: buy at the best price

Based in Neuville-sur-Seine, in the heart of the Côte des Bar, Champagne Douge is a grower-producer house founded by Florent Douge, alongside Katia Lazzarotti. Its identity can be summed up in a few words: mono-village by definition, mono-vintage by choice, and extra-brut by taste, with certain cuvées going as far as mono-cépage and mono-parcel. Spread across a dozen parcels located on both banks of the Seine, this Côte des Bar estate champions a respectful approach to viticulture, already certified VDC and HVE and committed to a conversion to organic farming. Vinified in the Burgundian style, in barrels and parcel by parcel, Champagne Douge wines are rare, precise, fresh, and indulgent bottles.

History of Champagne Douge

After several years at the helm of the family estate in Neuville-sur-Seine, Florent Douge felt he had explored every facet of his craft. A lover of life and beautiful things, he was missing the exhilaration of creation and remained unsatisfied. At forty, drawing on experience gained in other vineyards and a perfectly mastered technique, he decided to embark on a new path, with a single objective: to create a Champagne of exceptional character and strong emotional resonance. Curiosity was the trigger, and the desire to experiment the catalyst for this new challenge.

Like a painter playing with his palette to convey emotions, Florent works his wines with a strong identity and a subtle sense of pleasure. With the rigor of a scientist, the passion of an artist, and the dexterity of a goldsmith, he crafts, alongside Katia, characterful Champagnes designed for epicureans. His motto sums up his philosophy: to craft fresh, indulgent wines with a beautiful aromatic presence, whose colors are best perceived on the palate with eyes half-closed — the famous Douge signature.

Terroirs and Vines of Champagne Douge

The vineyard of Champagne Douge spreads across a dozen plots around Neuville-sur-Seine, on both banks of the Seine, within the Côte des Bar, the southern part of Champagne renowned for its clay-limestone soils and Kimmeridgian marls. Pinot Noir, king of this terroir, dominates largely, complemented by Chardonnay and a little Pinot Blanc. Each plot has its own personality: Faillet, the estate's oldest vine, perched at 307 meters altitude and co-planted with Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc, the Pinot Noir lieu-dits Val Mentra and Val Baury, and the Chardonnay plots of Les Enseignes and la Fontaine du Noyer.

Under the benevolent eye of Katia, Florent is committed to attentive and careful viticulture, respectful of living things. Already certified in Sustainable Viticulture in Champagne (VDC) and High Environmental Value (HVE), the estate has embarked on a conversion to organic farming in order to strengthen its attachment to its land. Seeking quality over quantity, the winemaker isolates his plots and grape varieties and does not hesitate to sacrifice the least promising clusters to retain only the best from each terroir.

Winemaking at Champagne Douge

Winemaking at Champagne Douge bears a distinctly Burgundian imprint. Florent isolates each plot, vinifies single-vintage wines, and works a large portion of his wines in barrels (notably 350-liter pieces), in order to reveal the personality of each terroir without compromise. True to the house's DNA, he crafts single-village Champagnes and, for several cuvées, single-varietal or single-plot wines.

The taste for precision extends to the dosage, always very low, between 0 and 5 g/L: most cuvées are undosed (0 g/L), while the others remain in extra-brut. After patient aging and a long rest on laths, disgorgement takes place late, to deliver ripe, taut wines of beautiful salinity, in the image of the Douge signature.

The cuvées of Champagne Douge

Duodecim, subtitled the revealed estate, is the flagship cuvée: it brings together the best of the twelve plots in a single-harvest blend (approximately 75% Pinot Noir and 25% Chardonnay), dosed in extra-brut at around 3 g/L. Its golden yellow robe, its fresh nose of yellow fruits and citrus, its supple attack, and its full palate lifted by a lovely tension and beautiful salinity make it a complete, digestible, and appetizing Champagne, also available in magnum.

Fleur de Gaillet, or white effervescence, is a 100% Chardonnay Blanc de Blancs born from the blending of the estate's two Chardonnay plots, aux Enseignes and à la Fontaine du Noyer, from the finest barrel. Undosed (0 g/L), it reveals a golden yellow robe with white-gold highlights, a generous and indulgent nose of juicy yellow fruits (mirabelle plum), a full and voluminous palate, and a lightly peppery finish enhanced by a touch of tartness.

Faillet, head in the stars, comes from the estate's oldest vine, perched at 307 meters and co-planted with Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc (67% and 33%). Vinified in 350-liter barrels for an airy and highly refined result, undosed, it captivates with its golden robe with amber nuances, its elegant nose of juicy fruits punctuated by vanilla and hazelnut, and its full palate whose fresh and tangy finish brings straightforwardness and elegance.

Val Mentra, feet firmly on the ground, is a pure Pinot Noir from a single plot in the terroir of Neuville-sur-Seine, a return to the essentials with no dosage. Its brilliant, amber robe fully embraces the grape variety, while its rich and indulgent nose blends juicy yellow fruits, chocolatey nuances, and toasted hazelnuts, for a full, dense, and ample palate extended by a fresh and taut finish.

Val Baury, dare the color, is a 100% Pinot Noir saignée rosé vinified in barrel from the maceration tank of a single plot, undosed. With an intense ruby robe and rosy highlights, it unfolds a complex nose of cherry, crumpled autumn leaves, and fruit in alcohol, then a warm and structured palate revealing a spicy hint of clove and licorice. A food wine, it is ideally served at around 12°C.

Rose Margot, Pinot Noir as an indulgence, is a 100% Pinot Noir rosé born from a singular blend of a Pinot Noir blanc and a saignée rosé, lightly dosed at 5 g/L and available in magnum. Conceived as a colorful, elegant, and fruity treat, it offers a pale pink hue, an expressive nose of raspberry and ripe strawberry, a full attack with a light tannic structure, and a taut, fruity, and floral finish marked by a hint of grapefruit.

Fontaine Blanc rounds out the range among the estate's most recent cuvées. This white Champagne, sourced from the terroir of Neuville-sur-Seine and faithful to the house's spirit, extends the quest for precision, freshness, and indulgence that defines all the wines of Champagne Douge.
