Wines from the Moulis en Médoc appellation in Bordeaux

The Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) Moulis-en-Médoc is located on the left bank of the Gironde 30 km northwest of Bordeaux, on a narrow strip 8 km long placed to the west between the Margaux and St Julien AOCs. Moulis owes its name to the numerous mills that existed in this commune and the appellation comprises 610 hectares of vines in the communes of: Arcins, Castelnau, Lamarque, Moulis en Médoc and part of Listrac-Médoc. Being located inland, the Moulis AOC cannot directly benefit from the influence of the river, and is therefore more sensitive to spring frost, but it benefits from excellent terroir of Garonne and Pyrenean gravels, which allows the red wines of Moulis to distinguish themselves and delight many wine lovers.

The TOP appellation of Bordeaux

Although the Moulis AOC represents only 4% of the vineyard surface of the entire Médoc, it nevertheless has around forty estates but does not include any classified growth from 1855. The most well-known Moulis wines are Châteaux Chasse Spleen, Gressier Grand Poujeaux, Maucaillou, Poujeaux... The red wines of Moulis are blended wines made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. In general, Moulis wines have a fairly complex aromatic profile of red fruits, spices, vanilla, liquorice, coffee and undergrowth. In good vintages, Moulis wines prove to be rich, full-bodied and powerful, with flavourful tannins that reveal good aging potential. Finer than Listrac wines, Moulis appellation wines are sought after by enthusiasts for their excellent value for money, as well as for the ability of certain wines to improve over 10 years and more in their best vintages such as 2015, 2014, 2010, 2009, 2005, 2001, 2000. Moulis wines can easily be paired with grilled veal chops, grilled lamb, aged Edam or Gouda, or St Nectaire cheese for food and wine pairings.
