The Bruno Clair domaine was founded in 1979 and is located in Marsannay la Côte, just north of Gevrey Chambertin in Bourgogne, in the famous Côte de Nuits. It is an exclusively family-run domaine that today spans 25 hectares and is managed by Bruno Clair. Son and grandson of a winegrower, the Clair name was already well known in Burgundy, but it was after the death of Joseph, his grandfather, that the Domaine Bruno Clair truly came into its own in 1986, through the inheritance of his grandfather's vines following the break-up of the Domaine Clair Daü. With vines spread across 7 villages and 28 appellations, including Marsannay, Fixin, Gevrey Chambertin, Aloxe Corton, Morey St Denis, Chambolle Musigny, Vosne Romanée, Pernand Vergelesses) the Bruno Clair domaine offers a wide range of white Burgundy and red Burgundy wines comprising 3 Grands Crus (Bonnes Mares, Chambertin Clos de Bèze and Corton Charlemagne), 4 Premiers Crus from Gevrey Chambertin (1er Cru Clos du Fonteny, 1er Cru les Cazetiers, 1er Cru Clos St Jacques and 1er Cru Petite Chapelle) and 2 Premiers Crus from Savigny les Beaune (1er Cru les Jarrons and 1er Cru la Dominode). Respect for the soils has always been a central concern at the Bruno Clair domaine and the winemaking philosophy is rooted in the pursuit of expressing each terroir while prioritizing finesse. The substantial size of the Bruno Clair domaine and above all a number of sumptuous climat sites such as the famous Chambertin Clos de Bèze or the most illustrious of the 1er Crus of Gevrey, the Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St Jacques, or indeed the Bourgogne Grand Cru Bonnes Mares on Morey Saint Denis, allow the domaine de pouvoir shine at the very top, thanks to such labels, which contribute greatly to the renown of the finest wines of the Côte de Nuits. In the vineyard, selection is rigorous and Bruno Clair ensures the reproduction of his future Pinot Noir and Chardonnay plants through a strict massal selection. In the cellar, partial destemming is practiced, followed by slow fermentations at low temperature, triggered naturally by indigenous yeasts. Ageing lasts from 16 to 22 months on fine lees, with 20 to 50% new oak. It should be noted that the best red vintages across these appellations are 2015, 2012, 2010, 2009, 2005. The wines produced by the Bruno Clair domaine are precise, intense, elegant, with great length and finesse. Their ageing potential is significant, and it is strongly advised to wait at least 10 years for the 3 Grands Crus and the famous Gevrey Chambertin Clos St Jacques in order to fully appreciate the development potential of such bottles. Their complexity will only be enhanced, and the lover of great wines from the Côte de Nuits will thus be thoroughly rewarded when tasting these exceptional bottles.
