The history of Domaine Jérôme Castagnier

Domaine Castagnier has its roots in Morey-Saint-Denis, an emblematic Côte de Nuits village where the family has tended vines for several generations. The estate flourished under Guy Castagnier, who patiently built its reputation on a handful of prized parcels in Burgundy’s finest appellations. For decades, Guy Castagnier gave his wines a signature rooted in fidelity to the terroir and respect for Pinot Noir, laying the foundations of a small but respected estate.

The story took a turn when Jérôme Castagnier, who had initially set out to become a professional musician, ultimately chose to return to the family estate. Officially taking over in 2004, he succeeded his father and quickly made his mark by combining respect for tradition with contemporary rigor. In 2013, he took a decisive step toward minimalist winemaking, without chaptalization, acidification, fining or filtration, to allow the terroir to express itself with the greatest purity. Vintage after vintage, Jérôme Castagnier has raised his estate to the ranks of Morey-Saint-Denis’s leading producers, earning numerous distinctions in specialist guides and winning a place at some of the world’s finest tables, from Japan and across Europe to the United States.

Terroirs and vineyards of Domaine Jérôme Castagnier

The vineyards of Domaine Jérôme Castagnier cover around four hectares, modest in size but strategically situated in the heart of the Côte de Nuits. The estate owns parcels in Morey-Saint-Denis, its home village, as well as in Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny and Vougeot. The high point of this mosaic is no fewer than four emblematic Grands Crus: Clos de la Roche, whose 60 ares make it the estate’s largest parcel; Clos Saint-Denis (35 ares); Charmes-Chambertin; and Clos de Vougeot. This concentration of Grands Crus in such a small area is one of the estate’s great strengths.

The sometimes rocky clay-limestone soils of the slopes of Morey-Saint-Denis and neighboring villages give the wines elegant minerality and a deep underlying structure. The vineyards are farmed using uncertified biodynamic practices, integrated pest management and great respect for the environment. Hand harvesting, green harvesting to limit yields and daily attention to the vines all help produce grapes of the highest quality. To complement his range, Jérôme Castagnier has also developed a négociant operation under his own name, allowing him to vinify exceptional cuvées from the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune using carefully selected grapes.

Winemaking at Domaine Jérôme Castagnier

In the winery, Jérôme Castagnier champions minimal intervention so that each terroir can express itself as faithfully as possible. The hand-harvested, rigorously sorted grapes are placed in vats with care to preserve their integrity. Fermentation takes place in traditional vats with indigenous yeasts, without chaptalization or acidification since 2013. This pure, natural approach preserves the aromatic delicacy of Pinot Noir and reveals the depth of Burgundy’s great climats.

The wines are aged in oak barrels for fourteen to eighteen months, depending on the cuvée and vintage, with a carefully controlled proportion of new oak to support the wine’s substance without masking the fruit. The Grands Crus, which require more from the aging process, sometimes see around 40% new barrels, while the village wines receive a more modest proportion. The wines are neither fined nor filtered before bottling, helping preserve their full aromatic richness and texture. The result is a cohesive range distinguished by a silky mouthfeel, exceptionally pure fruit and superb aging potential—qualities that have established Jérôme Castagnier’s reputation.

The cuvées of Domaine Jérôme Castagnier

Bourgogne Passe-Tout-Grains, a traditional blend of Pinot Noir and Gamay, offers a juicy, lively red full of fruit and easy to enjoy in its youth.

Coteaux Bourguignons Rosé, made with finesse, offers a fresh, fruity and delicate cuvée with notes of small red berries, perfect for warm days.

Bourgogne Pinot Noir embodies the house style: vibrant fruit, fine structure and a silky mouthfeel. An especially well-made regional cuvée that hints at the precision of the estate’s higher-tier terroirs.

Chambolle-Musigny Village reveals a Pinot Noir of elegance and delicacy, true to the floral, silky character of this appellation. Its fine, fruit-filled palate is appealing even in its youth.

Morey-Saint-Denis Village, a cuvée at the heart of the estate’s range, offers a deep, harmonious wine blending red and dark fruit with spice notes. Its structure and balance make it an estate classic.

Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Cru Aux Chéseaux, on the northern edge of the appellation near Gevrey-Chambertin, comes from a small 14-are parcel. This concentrated, harmonious Premier Cru offers notes of red fruit, clove and cocoa, supported by fine, silky tannins.

Gevrey-Chambertin Village, from a small 25-are parcel planted with 60-year-old vines, offers an intense, aromatic Pinot Noir blending dark fruit, Morello cherry and spices on a dense, lingering palate.

Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru captivates with a complex nose of leather, licorice, linden blossom, dark fruit and menthol. The lively, powerful palate leads to fine tannins and impressive length.

Clos de la Roche Grand Cru, the estate’s flagship grown on 60 ares, delivers a deep, structured wine. Its aromas of black cherry, blackcurrant and integrated oak, its density and its exceptional aging potential make it a major Morey-Saint-Denis cuvée.

Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru, grown on 35 ares at the top of Morey’s northern slope, offers a wine of admirable elegance. Its fine minerality, licorice notes, aromatic delicacy and seemingly endless length make it one of the estate’s finest expressions.

Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is a powerful, deep and distinctive cuvée. Its deep color, complex aromas of dark fruit and spices, and structured palate point to a fine wine built for very long aging.

Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru, vinified as part of the négociant operation, offers a Pinot Noir of beautiful mineral purity, at once fine, deep and intense, embodying the distinctive character of the Chambertin family of vineyards.

Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru, the jewel of the négociant range, offers a majestic, powerful and refined cuvée. Its tannic structure, aromatic depth and exceptional capacity to age make it a benchmark wine.

Bonnes Mares Grand Cru, vinified from grapes selected through the négociant operation, expresses all the nobility of this climat, which straddles Morey-Saint-Denis and Chambolle-Musigny, combining power and finesse on a generous, lingering palate.

Echézeaux Grand Cru, aged as part of the négociant operation, reveals an aromatic, deep Pinot Noir combining ripe red fruit, forest-floor notes and spices on a silky, persistent palate.

The Vosne-Romanée Village, made through the négociant operation, charms with its typical appellation character, aromas of small red berries and a silky, fine and refined palate.

The Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru Les Suchots, from one of the village’s most prestigious Premiers Crus, offers a deep, complex and long-lasting wine with a dense, silky palate that promises excellent aging potential.

Saint-Romain Blanc, aged as part of the négociant operation, offers a fresh, focused and mineral Chardonnay with citrus and white-flower notes, ideal for discovering this lesser-known Côte de Beaune appellation.

The Meursault Village reveals a rounded, appealing Chardonnay with aromas of hazelnut, fresh butter and yellow fruit, underpinned by lively freshness.
