The Mas du Chene estate: Costières de Nimes at its finest (Southern Rhône)
The MAS DU CHÊNE estate is located in the Gard, in the commune of Saint-Gilles, within the Costières de Nîmes appellation area. The estate's history began in 1915 with an inheritance of 36 hectares of vines, and over the generations, the Delon family expanded the estate and ensured its family succession.
Philippe Delon and Nicole Soyris-Delon managed the estate with passion and dedication, and upon Nicole's passing in 1999, her only daughter Emmanuelle decided to leave everything behind to settle at the Mas with her son and continue the family adventure as a winemaker, soon joined in 2008 by her partner Luc Vignal, who had until then worked as a wine merchant. Located in the southern part of the Costières de Nîmes appellation, the Mas du Chêne estate stands out for the atypical grape varieties of its 50 hectares of vines (Syrah, Grenache, Carignan, Merlot, Alicante, Pinot Noir, Sangiovese, Cinsault, Roussanne, Vermentino…). The estate produces a wide range of single-varietal cuvées (11), labelled as Vin de France. The vineyard benefits from a terroir of rounded pebbles that allows rainwater to filter between the stones and nourish the vines during summer droughts. Of the 50 hectares of vines, more than 10 hectares are farmed organically using traditional cultivation methods, and all wines bottled at the estate come from these plots. The wine range comprises original and varied cuvées. The "Marche Avant" cuvée is a wine with a clear, golden colour that unfolds its juicy fruitiness with a fine balance between roundness and acidity. Made from a blend of Roussanne, Grenache blanc and Vermentino, fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts, then aged in barrels from Burgundy and Château Yquem, followed by 8 months of lees ageing. The wine is distinguished by a well-ripened nose of yellow fruits and flowers, as well as a fine balance on the palate: ideal as an aperitif or with a platter of shellfish. The 100% "Sangiovese" cuvée is vinified in concrete vats, with half of its ageing carried out in barrels over 7 months. Its nose is very fruity, the wine is powerful on the palate, and Sangiovese — a traditionally Italian grape variety — pairs naturally with cuisine boasting transalpine influences. "Merlot l'enchanteur", another cuvée from Domaine du Chêne, is made from 100% destemmed Merlot, vinified in concrete vats and aged for 7 months in Burgundian barrels. Its peppery nose with hints of red fruits and its round, silky palate make it a lovely accompaniment to red meats grilled over a wood fire. The red "Amphore" cuvée is more ambitious and should be considered the prestige cuvée of Mas du Chêne: a wine from naturally farmed vines, with destemmed grapes, vinified and aged in 500-litre terracotta amphorae sourced from Italy. The production of this "Amphore" cuvée is confidential and limited to just 650 bottles per year. This wine offers a delicate nose of cherries and red berries, with a silky and structured palate. It is also worth noting that Mas du Chêne produces a white "Amphore" cuvée, made from a blend of the finest clusters of Roussanne and Vermentino, aged on lees for 12 months. A rich and powerful wine with a beautiful lingering finish.
