Sold in 1997 by the Valette family to Gérard Perse, Château Pavie Décesse is a classified Grand Cru of St Emilion. The estate is located 35km east of the Bordeaux region (on the Right Bank of the Dordogne), next to the estates of Pavie, Pavie Macquin and Troplong Mondot. The 3.65-hectare vineyard, with a density of 5,500 vines/ha, is cultivated using sustainable farming methods on a clay-limestone plateau. The only wine produced by the Pavie Décesse estate is the Fine Wine de Pavie Décesse, a full-bodied and substantial wine, rich and powerful, concentrated and intense, with aromas of blueberry, cherry and blackcurrant, with a mineral touch. In the 2003 vintage, notes of chocolate and liquorice are also present. Once known as a wine to drink after 5 to 10 years, Gérard Perse has succeeded in making it a truly great wine for ageing, as since the 1998 vintage, the Fine Wine de Pavie Décesse can be cellared for between 10 and 30 years. The finest vintages acclaimed by international critics are: 2015, 2014, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2006, 2005, 2003, 2001, 2000, 1999, 1998 and 1990. Overall, Château Pavie Décesse produces a wine in a style close to that of its famous neighbour Château Pavie (Grand Cru Classé A since 2012, alongside Cheval Blanc, Angélus and Ausone), but at a much more accessible price: indeed, both estates belong to Gérard Perse. As such, lovers of great Saint-Émilion wines will be drawn to acquiring a few bottles from the Pavie Décesse estate.
