Wine 1997

In Bordeaux 1997, flowering was uneven and stretched over more than a month, leading to disparities in grape ripeness. Strong export demand for the 1995 and 1996 vintages artificially drove up prices for this 1997 vintage, which has a lesser reputation. The 1997 red wines prove supple and fruity, but their ageing potential is likely moderate. In dry white Bordeaux 1997, Haut Brion stands out as an exception and produced the wine of the vintage in Pessac Léognan. In Sauternes, 1997 is a very good vintage that will delight enthusiasts for many years to come. A small harvest for Bourgogne 1997, but of good quality thanks to the fine dry weather during the harvest following the late-August storms. The 1997 vintage is suave and of good length in the Côte de Nuits reds, and the whites from the Côte de Beaune are rich and approachable.

Our tips for choosing a 1997 wine

If you're looking to invest in a bottle from the 1997 vintage, we recommend choosing one of the wines below. In Bordeaux, Léoville Las Cases 1997, Château Margaux 1997, Mouton Rothschild 1997, Haut-Brion White 1997, Ausone 1997, Canon la Gaffelière 1997, La Mondotte 1997, Pavie Macquin 1997, L'Église-Clinet 1997, L'Évangile 1997, Pétrus 1997, and Trotanoy 1997 are above average (this list is not exhaustive). Among the 1997 sweet wines, consider Climens 1997, Raymond Lafond 1997, Rieussec 1997, and Yquem 1997. In Burgundy 1997, prioritize the vineyard sites of the leading Grands Crus in and around the Côte de Nuits (Chambertin, Bonnes-Mares, Clos Vougeot, Échezeaux), which often benefit from the best care and exposures. The same goes for Chassagne-Montrachet (Côte de Beaune), where the 1997 white Grands Crus lead the way. In Alsace, Zind-Humbrecht's 1997 Clos Windsbuhl Pinot Gris exemplifies the year's extraordinary richness. Among Loire wines, Bonnezeaux 1997, Coteaux-du-Layon 1997, and Quarts-de-Chaume 1997 produced outstanding wines; for 1997 white Sancerre, Lucien Crochet's Vendange du 21 octobre cuvée is sumptuous.
