1997 Vintage

In Bordeaux 1997, flowering was heterogeneous and stretched over more than a month, leading to disparities in grape maturity. Strong export demand for the 1995 and 1996 vintages artificially inflated the prices of this 1997 vintage, which had a lesser reputation. The 1997 red wines prove supple and fruity, but their aging potential is probably moderate. In 1997 Bordeaux dry white wine, Haut Brion is an exception and produced the wine of the vintage in Pessac Léognan. In Sauternes, 1997 is a very good vintage, which will delight enthusiasts for many years. Small harvest for Burgundy 1997, but of good quality thanks to the beautiful dry weather during harvest after the late August storms. The 1997 vintage is suave and of good length in red Côte de Nuits, and the whites from the Côte de Beaune are rich and easy to approach.

Our advice for choosing a wine from 1997

Champagne 1997: average vintage, better executed in Chardonnay. 1997 is an intermediate vintage for Rhône wines, better for Côte-Rôtie 1997 and Hermitage 1997 (Northern sector) than in the South, where aging potential will be lesser. In the Loire Valley, wines from 1997 are of quality: lovely dry whites, powerful Savennières and sweet wines are of exceptional richness. In Alsace 1997, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris display an impressive sugar richness.

If you wish to invest in a bottle of wine from the 1997 vintage, we advise you to choose one of the wines from the following list. In Bordeaux, Léoville Las Cases 1997, Château Margaux 1997, Mouton Rothschild 1997, Haut Brion Blanc 1997, Ausone 1997, Canon la Gaffelière 1997, La Mondotte 1997, Pavie Macquin 1997, L'Eglise Clinet 1997, L'Evangile 1997, Pétrus 1997, Trotanoy 1997, are above average (non-exhaustive list). In sweet wines 1997: Climens 1997, Raymond Lafond 1997, Rieussec 1997 and Yquem 1997. In Burgundy 1997, the areas of the main Grands Crus of the Côte de Nuits (and neighboring areas) are climates to favor (Chambertin, Bonne Mares, Clos Vougeot, Echezeaux), as they often benefit from the best care and exposures. The same applies to Chassagne-Montrachet (Côte de Beaune) where the white Grands Crus 1997 dominate. In Alsace, the Clos Windsbuhl Pinot Gris 1997 from Zind Humbrecht is the archetype of the immense richness of the year. In Loire wines, Bonnezeaux 1997, Coteaux-du-Layon 1997, and Quarts-de-Chaume 1997 have produced very great wines, and in white Sancerre 1997, the Vendange du 21 octobre cuvée from Lucien Crochet proves sumptuous.
