Thierry Allemand

Wines at the pinnacle of the Cornas appellation

Wines from Domaine Thierry Allemand: buy at the best price

Thierry Allemand began his career as a winemaker by tending someone else's vines: those of Robert Michel. He then gradually purchased plots of land, which he managed alongside his other work at the beginning. Today he oversees 5 hectares in Cornas. He notably owns plots in the lieu-dits Les Chaillots and Reynard, which gave their names to the eponymous cuvées. From the latter, he produces a sulfur-free cuvée. The other wines benefit from a truly minimal addition of sulfur at bottling. Thierry Allemand does not claim to be organic, but follows its principles by treating his vines exclusively with sulfur and copper. The wines are aged in multi-vintage barrels for 24 months, and sometimes less.

Frequently Asked Questions

Thierry Allemand is a winemaker from Ardèche based in Cornas, in the northern Rhône Valley. A former electromechanical engineer, he acquired his first plots as early as 1980 and patiently built an estate of around 5 hectares on very steep terraced hillsides. His tireless work, carried out largely by hand — a winch and a pickaxe being the only tools possible on these steep slopes — has earned him worldwide recognition. Today supported by his son Théo, Thierry Allemand is considered one of the most important artisan winemakers of the Cornas appellation, to whose prestige he has greatly contributed.

Thierry Allemand does not claim any official organic certification, but his practices come very close to it. In the vineyard, he uses neither herbicides nor synthetic pesticides, limiting his interventions to sulphur and copper. As mechanisation is impossible on the steep terraces of Cornas, all vineyard operations are carried out by hand. In the cellar, the philosophy is in the same spirit: macerations and punch-downs are slow and gentle, fermentations take place without added inputs, and ageing lasts approximately 24 months in multi-vintage barrels, sometimes followed by three additional months in large oak casks. Sulphur, when used, is dosed to a minimum at the time of bottling.

Thierry Allemand's Cornas wines, 100% Syrah, pair wonderfully with generous, aromatic cuisine. The Chaillot cuvée, more supple and fruity, will ideally accompany a leg of lamb with Provence herbs, a grilled côte de bœuf, or a selection of aged cheeses. The Reynard cuvée, more powerful and complex, calls for more elaborate preparations: game birds, duck with cherries, black truffles from Périgord, or a hare stew. In all cases, it is preferable to serve these wines between 16 and 18°C and to open them at least one hour before serving to allow their bouquet to fully express itself.

The Thierry Allemand estate produces two iconic cuvées from two distinct named plots. The Chaillot cuvée comes from parcels with clay soils, planted with vines averaging around forty years of age: it offers a fruity, elegant profile that is accessible at a relatively young age. The Reynard cuvée, sourced from more calcareous and granitic soils, is vinified from old vines over 60 years of age, some of which were acquired from the legendary Noël Verset, and yields a wine of greater depth, more powerful and more concentrated. There is also a no added sulphur cuvée, produced in very small quantities from the Reynard plot, intended for natural wine enthusiasts seeking remarkable aromatic purity.

Thierry Allemand's Cornas wines are excellent candidates for ageing. Thanks to their solid tannic structure, naturally high acidity and concentration of dark fruits, they can age gracefully for 10 to 20 years depending on the vintage and the cuvée. The Reynard cuvée, made from the estate's oldest vines, generally supports even longer ageing than the Chaillot cuvée. It is advisable to decant them generously if drunk young, and to store them in a cellar at a stable temperature to fully appreciate their aromatic evolution: leather, spices, candied fruits, balsamic notes.

The choice of vintage depends above all on when you plan to open the bottle. For drinking within the next 3 to 5 years, vintages such as 2015, 2016, or 2017 are excellent choices, both for the Chaillot cuvée and for Reynard. The Chaillot cuvée, with approximately 500 cases produced per year, is a must-have for lovers of elegant and well-balanced wines, and makes an ideal gift for a connoisseur. For an even more memorable occasion, the Reynard cuvée from a great solar vintage such as 2010 or 2015 offers an exceptional tasting experience. In all cases, Thierry Allemand's wines are unfiltered: a slight sediment at the bottom of the bottle is perfectly normal and is a testament to their authentic character.

The History of Domaine Thierry Allemand

The story of Domaine Thierry Allemand is one of consuming passion and unwavering determination. A former electromechanical engineer, Thierry Allemand was not destined to become an iconic figure in Cornas. Yet, as early as 1981, he acquired his first plot and embarked on a bold viticultural adventure. In his early years, he worked in parallel at Domaine Robert Michel, a local benchmark, where he learned the secrets of the steep terraces and traditional winemaking methods. For 15 years, he led a double life, devoting his weekends to his own vines, restoring abandoned plots and rebuilding dry-stone walls by hand.

In 1992, his style became more defined, marking the beginning of his renown. With the guidance of mentors such as Philippe Pacalet and Jacques Néauport, he refined his natural winemaking techniques, using no additives or added sulfur. In 2001, he built a modern winery in Saint-Romain-de-Lerps, designed to optimize the flow of juice by gravity — a testament to precision and purity in his wines. Today, supported by his son Théo, Thierry Allemand is recognized as one of the greatest winemakers in the Rhône Valley, having restored the reputation of the Cornas appellation, once overshadowed by its neighbors such as Hermitage.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Thierry Allemand

Domaine Thierry Allemand covers approximately 5 hectares, spread across several plots with varied terroirs, mostly on steep, terraced slopes. These hillsides, with a south-east exposure, benefit from optimal sunlight, encouraging early ripening of the grapes. The soils, composed of decomposed granite, limestone, and clay, lend the wines a unique minerality and complexity. Among the emblematic climats, Chaillot and Reynard stand out. Chaillot, with its clay soils, is home to vines under 50 years old, while Reynard, more limestone in character, is planted with old vines over 60 years old, some of which were acquired from the legendary Noël Verset.

All vineyard work is done exclusively by hand, as mechanization is impossible on these steep terraces. A team of 22 people works with pickaxes and winches to tend the soils, without herbicides, using natural treatments such as copper. Thierry Allemand, a fervent advocate of craftsmanship, refuses organic or biodynamic certification, preferring freedom and authenticity over any form of labeling. Yields, kept deliberately low (between 20 and 30 hl/ha), ensure an exceptional concentration of the grapes — a true hallmark of the estate's wines.

Winemaking at Domaine Thierry Allemand

Thierry Allemand's winemaking philosophy rests on a single principle: to intervene as little as possible in order to let the terroir express itself. In the cellar, every decision is made to preserve the purity of the fruit and the individuality of each plot. The harvested grapes, left unstemmed, undergo slow macerations and gentle punch-downs, carried out by hand or by foot. Fermentations, triggered by indigenous yeasts, take place in stainless steel tanks or large oak foudres, without the use of any oenological additives.

The aging process, lasting 24 months, takes place in used barrels (never new oak) to avoid any woody imprint, followed by three months in large foudres. The wines are bottled without filtration or fining, with minimal sulfur addition (1 g/hl) or sometimes none at all for certain cuvées. This process, carried out entirely by gravity, guarantees wines that are vibrant, elegant, and approachable from an early age, while offering a remarkable aging potential. Every gesture, precise and considered, reflects Thierry Allemand's commitment to exceptional natural wines.

The Cuvées of Domaine Thierry Allemand

Domaine Thierry Allemand produces two emblematic single-vineyard cuvées, Chaillot and Reynard, as well as a sulfur-free cuvée depending on the vintage. These wines, made exclusively from Syrah, embody the essence of the Cornas terroir.

Cornas Chaillot

The Chaillot cuvée, crafted from vines aged between 5 and 40 years, comes from the clay and limestone soils of Chaillot and La Côte. Fermented in stainless steel tanks and large oak foudres, it benefits from 24 months of aging in used barrels. This wine captivates with its freshness, finesse, and aromas of red fruits, flowers, and gentle spices. Its silky tannins and minerality make it an accessible Cornas from an early age, while promising a fine evolution over 10 to 15 years. With approximately 500 cases produced per year, Chaillot is an essential choice for lovers of elegant and well-balanced wines.

Cornas Reynard

Reynard, the estate's flagship cuvée, comes from old vines (34 to 90 years old) from the Reynard climat, complemented by other limestone terroirs. This wine, vinified with the same rigor as Chaillot, stands out for its power, depth, and complexity. Its notes of dark fruit, pepper, violet, and graphite, combined with a firm tannic structure, make it an outstanding wine for aging. Aged for 24 months in barrels and foudres, Reynard is produced in limited quantities (500 cases per year), making it a highly coveted bottle among collectors and Syrah enthusiasts.

Sulfur-Free Cuvée (depending on vintage)

When vintage conditions allow, Thierry Allemand produces a sulfur-free cuvée, crafted from grapes from the Reynard climat. This wine, vinified with extreme precision, reveals an unparalleled purity and vibrancy. Its intense aromas of ripe fruit, minerality, and spice, combined with a velvety texture, make it a unique experience for lovers of natural wines. Produced in very limited quantities, this cuvée is an absolute rarity.

Domaine Thierry Allemand is far more than a wine producer: it is an ode to craftsmanship, respect for the terroir, and authenticity. Through its cuvées Chaillot, Reynard, and its rare sulfur-free cuvée, Thierry Allemand redefines excellence in Cornas wines, offering Syrahs of unparalleled elegance and depth. Each bottle tells a story of hard work, passion, and freedom — that of a winemaker who breathed new life into a little-known appellation. For enthusiasts wishing to purchase exceptional wines, Domaine Thierry Allemand represents a unique opportunity to acquire rare bottles, sought after the world over. Immerse yourself in the world of this legendary estate and order now to discover wines that leave a lasting impression on both the mind and the palate.
