Founded in 1977, the Yannick Amirault estate is located in the communes of Bourgueil and Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil in the Val de Loire. Yannick Amirault took over the 3.40 hectares of vines from his grandfather, including the emblematic Malgagnes terroir. In the 1990s, the Domaine Yannick Amirault expanded by acquiring the vines of two winegrowers, including one of Bourgueil's most sought-after terroirs: the Grand Clos. It was at this time that Yannick Amirault abandoned all herbicides and returned to traditional barrel ageing.

History of Domaine Yannick Amirault

The estate was founded in 1936 by Eugène Amirault on the limestone soils of the Loire’s right bank, a favored terroir for Cabernet Franc. His grandson Yannick took the helm in 1977 and gave the estate its present scale. From the outset, he set himself exacting standards: no herbicides, thinning the vines, grass cover between the rows, aging in barrels and a constant pursuit of optimal grape ripeness. He was among the first to lead the way in Bourgueil and Saint-Nicolas, revealing the potential of the area’s old vines.

By 2000, the entire vineyard was either plowed or planted with grass cover, and the estate decided not to expand further so it could retain full control of its plots. In 2003, Benoît Amirault, the founder’s great-grandson, joined his father and now shares the management of the property with him. The complete transition to organic farming came in 2009, with Ecocert certification. The guiding principle has remained unchanged for 30 years: to produce honest, pure, enjoyable wines, with exacting care for the vines and fruit so that intervention in the cellar can remain minimal.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Yannick Amirault

The vineyard spans 19 hectares, two-thirds in the commune of Bourgueil and one-third in Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil, divided into around 20 plots in the former bed of the Loire and on the slopes above it. Cabernet Franc is the sole grape variety used for the reds, complemented by a touch of Chenin for the whites. Three main soil types shape the range: gravel and sand terraces, which yield lighter, more aromatic wines; flint-bearing clays; and, finally, the clay-limestone soils of the slope, often the most prized, where Turonian tuffeau limestone reaches the surface.

Each terroir is tended like a garden, in step with the lunar cycle, with thorough cultivation of the soil beneath the vines and natural grass cover between the rows. The vines average around 40 years of age, with some hillside plots over 50 years old. Yields are kept well below the maximum permitted by the appellation, and the grapes are harvested entirely by hand into small baskets to preserve the berries intact.

Winemaking at Domaine Yannick Amirault

In the winery, the principle is simple: there is no fine wine without excellent grapes. The grapes are sorted and completely destemmed, without crushing, before going into tanks. Fermentation takes place with native yeasts in open tanks, favoring gentle maceration for around three weeks, or longer for the more structured hillside crus. Extraction remains measured, with no pursuit of unnecessary power, to preserve the fine texture characteristic of Bourgueil Cabernet Franc.

Each cru is then aged separately, with a deliberately light touch: in tapered wooden tanks, barrels and demi-muids that leave little imprint, as well as stoneware jars and amphorae, whose use has grown in recent years. Aging ranges from seven to 12 months for the fruit-driven cuvées to more than a year for wines made to age. The wines are bottled with minimal intervention to preserve aromatic vibrancy and easy drinkability.

The cuvées of Domaine Yannick Amirault

Côte 50 (Bourgueil red): the fruit-driven cuvée and the estate’s flagship, occupying its largest vineyard area. It brings together plots in the Bourgueil terrace’s named sites, 50 meters above the Loire (Les Sables, La Coudraye, Les Pins and Les Perrières), on gravelly and sandy soils with a little clay, planted with vines around 40 years old. Gentle maceration for three weeks is followed by restrained aging for seven to 12 months in wooden tanks, stoneware jars and barrels. The most approachable Cabernet Franc in the range, bursting with fruit from its youth.

Les Quartiers (Bourgueil red): nicknamed “terre à blanc,” this unusual single-plot cuvée grows on chalk, with a high level of active limestone that demands humility and patience. The wine draws uncommon purity and strength from it, with a saline backbone and firm tannins that need a few years to soften. Vintage after vintage, it is often the estate’s most fascinating cru.

Le Grand Clos (Bourgueil red): a historic terroir of the appellation, classified as premier cru by the abbey several centuries ago, planted on about two hectares of flint-bearing clay over limestone. The aristocrat of the range yields a deep, spicy wine with dense yet harmonious layers and remarkable aging potential. It needs time to reveal its full complexity.

Pavillon du Grand Clos (Bourgueil red): the estate’s exceptional wine, from an enclosed plot of just 0.21 hectares in the heart of Grand Clos, produced only in outstanding years. Aged with exceptional care, this small-production cuvée offers rare concentration and length, with such limited availability that it is a collector’s bottle.

La Source (Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil red): from the appellation’s sandy terraces and the estate’s youngest vines, it is aged exclusively in tanks to preserve the fruit’s full vibrancy. Crisp, floral and inviting, it can be enjoyed as soon as it is bottled, ideally decanted, with simple food shared among friends.

La Mine (Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil red): a plot of about 1.5 hectares at the foot of the slope where Les Malgagnes lies, on gravelly clay with deeper soils. The wine gains body and roundness compared with La Source, with juicy black fruit and supple tannins, perfect with charcuterie or roast meat.

Les Malgagnes (Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil red): the quintessential hillside site of the appellation and the family’s historic plot, with two hectares of vines around 50 years old on pale, iron-rich clays over limestone. Demanding to work, this terroir shows incomparable generosity. Longer maceration produces a dense, smoky wine with a fine, tightly woven structure. The cru is also available, in very limited quantities, in a version aged entirely in amphorae.

Rosé d’Équinoxe (Bourgueil rosé): the estate’s unlikely creation, made by directly pressing Cabernet Franc, then fermenting and aging it on the lees in barrels for several months. Decidedly unconventional, this is a dry, full-bodied rosé with a vinous character and rich texture, designed for the table rather than the aperitif and able to accompany fish in sauce and poultry.

Bâtard-Princesse (IGP Val de Loire white): elegance in a bottle, born of Chenin, a white grape variety never recognized by the 1937 appellation decree, though it was widely grown in Bourgueil at the start of the century. Made by direct pressing, a gentler method than the maceration used for Cabernet, it offers a dry white of fine Loire character: floral, taut and saline.

Franc Secret (IGP Val de Loire white): a little-known, small-production cuvée and a true blanc de noirs made from Cabernet Franc, produced without crushing or macerating the berries, giving it a surprising golden hue. The grape variety lends unusual aromas to this smooth, enticing white, made in very small quantities.

La Coudraye and La Petite Cave: two historic cuvées from the estate. The first comes from gravel and sand terraces and was long offered as a fruit-driven cuvée; the second comes from old vines on clay-limestone soils and is distinguished by particularly long aging. Still sought after in older vintages, they reflect the plot-by-plot approach Yannick Amirault has pursued since the 1980s.
