Born in 1996 from the friendship between three leading winemakers of the northern Rhône, Yves Cuilleron, Pierre Gaillard and François Villard, Les Vins de Vienne set itself a mission: to revive the ancient vineyard of Seyssuel, celebrated by Pliny the Elder and then forgotten for a century. Based in Chavanay, the estate today cultivates its own vineyard on the schist hillsides of the left bank of the Rhône and rounds out its range through a carefully selected network of partner producers, from Côte-Rôtie to Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

The TOP winemakers of Rhône

In 1996, they decided to plant 4 hectares of vines near the Château des Archevêques, on the hillsides of the village of Seyssuel, located just 2 km north of Vienne, where it was said that the finest vines destroyed in 1883 by phylloxera could be compared to those of Côte Rôtie. Never replanted since, the Seyssuel vineyard had fallen into neglect until their arrival. The trio Cuilleron, Gaillard, Villard produced their 1st cuvée of Rhône rouge in 1998 : SOTANUM, followed by a Rhône blanc TABURNUM, and then a second red in 2004 : HELUICUM. From 2000 onwards, a 2-star restaurant in Vienne purchased a significant portion of their modest production, which ultimately convinced the 3 companions that they were on the right track, as the majority of the estate's vines were planted between 1996 and 2001. Today, the estate encompasses nearly 20 hectares of vineyard, which has greatly revitalized the IGP Collines Rhodaniennes, with more than 15 winemakers now producing cuvées from Seyssuel. Of the 20 hectares of vineyard that the domaine des Vins de Vienne now covers, 12 hectares are located on the hillsides of Seyssuel and 8 hectares on the other bank of the Rhône, with the acquisition of plots in Condrieu, Côte-Rôtie, Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, Cornas and Saint-Péray. The wine range has been structured, and beyond the 3 original cuvées (SOTANUM, TABURNUM, and HELUICUM), numerous lieu-dits in parcel selections have emerged, covering all the appellations of the Northern Rhône, along with 2 new ranges named Amphore d'Or and Amphore d'Argent, in partnership with selected producers chosen for the quality of their work and adherence to a rigorous set of specifications. The "Amphores d'Or" highlight wines that are denser and more full-bodied. The St-Joseph is classic and well-structured, drinking well and best enjoyed within 5 years. "Taburnum", 100% Viognier aged for 16 months on the lees, is beautifully ripe and does not veer into the overly pronounced varietal aromas sometimes found in Condrieu. "Sotanum", a pure Syrah aged for 15 months, is broad and well-balanced, with complexity and a spiced finish. Sotanum can be cellared for more than 10 years without concern. "Heluicum", benefiting from a shorter aging period (12 months), is more approachable, with fruit and spice, silky tannins and a more moderate aging potential (5/6 years). The Côte-Rôtie "les Essartailles" is a genuine success, with delicate tannins, spiced black fruits, and a beautiful length. Highly recommended for lovers of finesse.
