Stéphane Montez from Domaine du Monteillet has been based in Chavanay in the Rhône since 1997, and his vineyard spans 38 ha. Production is focused 60% on red Rhône wines, but one must certainly not overlook the magnificent white Rhône wines from Domaine Stéphane Montez (nearly 40% of production), including the Condrieu, with 4 cuvées: "Chanson", long and harmonious; "Les Grandes Chaillées", broader and more rounded; the highly allocated "Grillette"; and the cuvée "Candice", a rare and precious sweet Condrieu.

The TOP winemakers of Rhône

In red wine, Domaine Montez owns a magnificent plot of very old syrah in the AOC Saint Joseph, at the origin of the generous and indulgent "Cuvée du Papy", produced at the estate since 1989, with a powerful and opulent profile. Two other St Joseph wines are also produced by Stéphane Montez: 1 white Saint Joseph and 1 red, more immediately approachable, to satisfy the impatient. In AOC Côte Rôtie, Stéphane Montez produces 3 cuvées: the Côte Rôtie Fortis, coming from the slopes of blonde gneiss soils south of Ampuis, a terroir that allows the power and minerality of the Syrah to blend perfectly with the fruit and roundness of the viognier. The Côte Rôtie Bons Arrêts, a plot from the lieu-dit of the same name, of which Stéphane Montez is the sole owner. Finally, the last Côte Rôtie, "Les Grandes Places", drawn from brown soils, is planted on one of the finest terroirs of the appellation. Composed of 97% Syrah and only 3% viognier, the Côte Rôtie "Les Grandes Places" delivers intense aromas of black fruits (blackcurrant, blueberry, prune), smoky and menthol notes. Its palate is of great depth, the tannins are tight but well integrated thanks to a long and ambitious ageing process, which gives the wine that extra richness. Finally, and since 2013, Stéphane Montez offers a Cornas produced from a tiny plot taken on lease. A wild wine of pure syrah, requiring a long ageing of 30 months in barrel to tame its vigour. A great wine for ageing par excellence, it will improve over 15 years. The entry-level wines of the estate named: "La Syrah à Papa", "Le Petit Viognier", or "Les blancs d'en face" or "Les Hauts du Monteillet" are excellent introductions to the wines of Domaine Montez, and allow you to become familiar with the style of Stéphane Montez. Note that the best vintages for the Côte Rôtie appellation are as follows: 1985, 1987, 1989, 1991, 1995, 1996, 1999, 2005, 2011, 2015 and 2017.
