At Candes-Saint-Martin, at the confluence of the Vienne and the Loire, between the Chinon and Saumur appellations, Patrick Corbineau is one of the most discreet and most revered winemakers in the entire Loire Valley. Across two to three hectares of very old Cabernet Franc and Chenin vines — some ungrafted — farmed without chemical inputs for several decades, he crafts wines of rare depth, aged without artifice in a troglodyte cellar. Regarded as an "extraterrestrial" by his peers, this self-taught winemaker produces cuvées (Beaulieu, Conquêtes, Cumelle, Presses) with a unique signature: long macerations, ageing sometimes spanning several years, without added sulphites.
The history of Domaine Patrick Corbineau is that of a singular man, deeply attached to his land and his convictions. Patrick Corbineau has spent several decades cultivating the family vines located in Candes-Saint-Martin, a small village listed among the most beautiful in France, at the confluence of the Vienne and the Loire, between Chinon and Saumur. Far removed from trends, calculations, chemistry and mechanisation, this self-taught winemaker chose very early on a radically natural path, the antithesis of the oenological standards of his era. Working alone, by hand, he has built over the years a discreet yet immense reputation among the most demanding natural wine enthusiasts.
Regarded as an "extraterrestrial" by his peers, Patrick Corbineau follows no precise or strict technique: he prefers to listen to the wine and wait for it to tell him what needs to be done. This instinctive, profoundly humble approach has made his domaine one of the mythical references of the Loire. His reputation has notably crossed borders thanks to natural wine enthusiasts and specialist wine merchants, who consider him an heir to the great Loire winemakers of former times. The new generation of natural winemakers in Chinon, such as Henri and Valentin Bruneau of the Domaine des Frères, even completed their apprenticeship at his side, testament to the extent of his influence in the region.
The domaine extends over approximately two to three hectares of very old vines, located in Candes-Saint-Martin and the surrounding area, across the Chinon and Touraine appellations and Vin de France. The vineyard rests on soils characteristic of the Chinonais: tuffeau, aeolian sands and clay-limestone earth, set upon the famous chalky subsoil of the Turonian that defines the great Loire Valley. These terroirs bring finesse, elegance and a mineral signature to the Cabernet Franc, while the tuffeau soils lend tension and depth to the Chenin Blanc.
The blend is dominated by Cabernet Franc, the reigning grape variety of Chinon, complemented by a few rows of Chenin Blanc for the whites. A very rare characteristic, the domaine has ungrafted vines (own-rooted), a pre-phylloxera heritage of inestimable value. Viticulture is rigorously organic and natural (without certification), with absolutely no use of synthetic chemical inputs. Yields are tiny, harvests late, manual, and at full maturity. Patrick Corbineau also follows lunar cycles for his rackings, reflecting a deeply intuitive approach that is respectful of living things.
In the cellar, Patrick Corbineau practises an entirely artisanal vinification, in a troglodyte cellar carved directly into the tuffeau, in the dim half-light. Fermentations are conducted with indigenous yeasts alone, without any oenological inputs. Macerations are deliberately very long, sometimes lasting several weeks, to allow the grapes to yield their full aromatic and tannic quintessence without aggressive extraction. No sulphite additions are made, either during vinification or at bottling, and no fining or filtration is carried out.
The ageing is long, in old used barrels, over periods that can exceed several years depending on the cuvée. This patience, running counter to modern standards, gives the wines a unique, patinated texture, melted tannins and a deeply authentic character. Patrick Corbineau follows no rigid protocol: he observes, waits, listens and racks according to lunar cycles, in an approach that is as much craft as it is art. The result is an unmistakable signature: wines of rare vibration, where depth and sincerity prevail over any technical consideration, evoking the great Loire wines of former times.
Chinon Beaulieu: the domaine's historic and emblematic cuvée, crafted from Cabernet Franc sourced from very old vines planted on the clay-limestone and tuffeau terroirs of the Chinonais. Vinification with long maceration, extended ageing in old barrels without added sulphites. An evolved ruby colour, a complex nose of black cherry, raspberry, dried rose, blonde tobacco, delicate leather, undergrowth and damp chalk. A deep palate, supple yet surprisingly energetic, with melted tannins and a unique patinated texture. A great Chinon for cellaring, to be held for a few more years to reveal its full depth.
Touraine Conquêtes: a single-parcel cuvée under the Touraine appellation, crafted from Cabernet Franc sourced from a distinct plot in Candes-Saint-Martin. Vinification follows the same natural spirit as the domaine's other reds, with long maceration and ageing in old barrels. The wine captivates with its barely evolved colour even after years of cellaring, its nose of red fruits (raspberry in particular), its silky and full palate, generous, with a velvety texture and a fresh finish. A great bottle, capable of holding its own against the finest cuvées of Chinon.
Touraine Cumelle: another single-parcel cuvée under the Touraine appellation, crafted from Cabernet Franc. A rare and unprecedented expression of the variety in the Loire Valley, marked by an exceptional velvety texture and a complex aromatic signature (ripe cherry, gentle spices, undergrowth). Long ageing, without any inputs, which lends the wine its particularly distinctive depth. A cuvée absolutely not to be missed, a testament to Patrick Corbineau's discreet mastery.
Presses: a Vin de France cuvée crafted from the final press juices, in keeping with the domaine's pure artisanal philosophy. A raw and concentrated expression of Cabernet Franc, with a structured tannic framework and singular aromatic depth, revealing another facet of the winemaker's patient and instinctive expertise.
Vin de France Blanc (Chenin): a confidential white cuvée, crafted from Chenin Blanc sourced from very old vines, sometimes own-rooted. Natural vinification, without added sulphites, long ageing in old barrels. A pure, deep and mineral expression of the great Loire grape variety, with a marked saline framework and remarkable aromatic complexity, revealing the full singularity of the tuffeau of Candes-Saint-Martin.
