Patrick Bouju's iron will in service of these forgotten Auvergne wines
The Domaine La Boheme is located in Auvergne, and more precisely in Billom in the Puy de Dôme, barely 10km east of Clermont-Ferrand. Today in full revival thanks to winemakers such as Patrick Bouju at the head of La Boheme, the Puy de Dôme department was however the 3rd most important in France at the end of the 19th century, with more than 40,000 ha of vineyards.
Phylloxera, mildew and the First World War took their toll on this vineyard, and it is now reduced to 800 hectares. Patrick Bouju has old vines spread across the communes of Billom, Corent, Egliseneuve-près-Billom, Lempdes, and Puy d'Anzelles. The oldest are nearly 120 years old, and he cultivates a wide variety of old grape varieties: Limberger, Mirefleurien, Damas rouge or Damas noir (Syrah d'Auvergne) as well as several varieties of Gamay such as Gamay Fréau, Gamay de Bouze and other varieties of Gamay with small or large berries. Patrick Bouju also cultivates flagship grape varieties such as the Burgundy varieties Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. All these grape varieties form the great wealth of Domaine la Boheme, which seems to fight vehemently against the standardization of wine tastes. The vines benefit from grass cover and natural treatments (copper, sulfur, fermented plant extracts, herbal tea) and almost all the work is done by hand. Harvesting often takes place from mid-October onwards (the vines being located at an average altitude of 500m). In the cellar, following this same philosophy, vinifications are parcel-based and conducted by indigenous yeasts (to preserve the identity of the original terroir), and they are very low-intervention. Domaine la Boheme by Patrick Bouju practices long macerations, from 60 to 100 days depending on the cuvée, and the wines rest for a long time, up to six months, after bottling, most often without added sulfites. With these strengths, Patrick Bouju produces flavorful, natural and healthy wines that are highly appreciated by a new generation of tasters, eager for discovery. Patrick Bouju's wines are straight, clean and precise, often marked by floral, spicy and mineral notes. Delicious and festive, they surprise and seduce, sometimes with concentration, elegance and smooth tannins, and also with sparkling freshness. Some wines are produced as négociant wines, with grapes obtained from other partner winemakers, such as the cuvée "J comme Jacquère," whose grapes come from Jean-Yves Peron, a winemaker from Savoie; or the cuvée "Super Best," which is a blend of different Gamays from the Rhône, from granite terroirs, blue stones and other prestigious appellations of Beaujolais (notably Brouilly). One thing is certain, you won't get bored with the cuvées from Domaine la Bohème!
