The Bouzereau family’s winemaking history is deeply rooted in Meursault’s heritage. The family has grown vines in Meursault for seven generations, building a reputation for excellence over the decades that extends well beyond Burgundy. Michel Bouzereau played a decisive role in expanding the family estate, gradually enlarging the vineyards inherited from his ancestors to their present size. His meticulous work and long-term vision helped establish the property among the leading estates of the Côte d’Or.

The generational handover took place in 1999, a pivotal year when Jean-Baptiste Bouzereau officially took the reins of the estate. This understated but exceptionally talented winemaker brought a fresh perspective while carefully preserving the traditional methods behind the family’s reputation. A new winery, designed to allow the wines to spend two winters aging and to support highly precise work, opened in 2009, marking another step in the ongoing pursuit of quality. Its new winemaking facilities provide optimal conditions for vinifying and aging each cuvée separately, respecting the individual rhythm of every plot and vintage.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Michel Bouzereau

The vineyards of Domaine Michel Bouzereau form a mosaic of prestigious terroirs, concentrated mainly in the Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet appellations. The vineyards of Domaine Michel Bouzereau are dominated by Chardonnay, with 10 cuvées produced in Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet, each precisely expressing the subtle nuances of its climat of origin. These plots have the clay-limestone soils typical of the Côte de Beaune, rich in limestone and marl, providing the vines with excellent drainage and an exceptional supply of minerals.

Meursault’s terroirs are distinguished by their geological diversity. The Grands Charrons, Limozin and Tessons climats form the foundation of the village-level wines, producing wines of remarkable purity. The Les Tessons climat, in the heart of the Meursault hillside, had already been awarded the coveted “Première cuvée” designation in the 19th century, an early recognition of this terroir’s exceptional quality. Among its Premier Crus, the estate owns plots in the legendary Meursault-Blagny, Meursault-Charmes Dessus and Meursault-Genevrières climats, and above all Meursault-Perrières, a true jewel acquired in 2004.

In Puligny-Montrachet, the estate offers two Chardonnay Premier Crus: Les Champs Gains and Le Cailleret. The latter, produced in very limited quantities, is one of the estate’s gems and lies directly beside the legendary Montrachet Grand Cru. The soils here are particularly stony and limestone-rich, giving the wines vibrant minerality and exceptional tension.

The vines grow on varied soils and range from old vines dating back to 1938 to younger plantings, contributing greater complexity and depth to the cuvées. For its red wines, the estate also cultivates Pinot Noir plots in Pommard (the Les Cras climat), Volnay (Premier Cru Les Aussy) and Beaune (Premier Cru Les Vignes Franches).

The winemaking philosophy at Domaine Michel Bouzereau rests on a fundamental principle: the Bouzereau family firmly believes that good wine begins with a good harvest. This approach means farming with respect for the environment, avoiding chemicals and favoring thoughtful viticulture that is gradually moving toward organic practices. Careful observation of the vines throughout the growing season allows the team to intervene at the right time and obtain perfectly healthy, ripe fruit.

The grapes are harvested entirely by hand, ensuring rigorous selection while preserving their integrity. Although more costly and labor-intensive, hand harvesting is an essential mark of quality for wines of this caliber. The grapes are carefully transported to the winery, where the winemaking process begins in earnest.

For the white wines, the harvested grapes are gently pressed, then the musts are transferred to French oak barrels for fermentation. No commercial yeast is added, allowing indigenous yeasts to fully express the character of the terroir. This minimalist approach in the cellar lets the fruit and terroir speak for themselves, without obscuring their character through excessive intervention. The wines are aged on fine lees for 12 to 18 months, depending on the cuvée, with a carefully calibrated proportion of new barrels (generally between 20% and 30% for the Premier Crus) to add structure and complexity without overwhelming the wine’s expression.

For the red cuvées, the Pinot Noir grapes are destemmed and cold-macerated before fermenting with indigenous yeasts. The wines are then aged in oak barrels for 12 to 16 months, followed by a few months in tank before bottling. This method gently extracts tannins and aromatic compounds, producing elegant red wines with silky tannins.

The estate’s wines depart from the current trend toward toasty minerality, focusing instead on a style in which elegance and purity prevail, as experts have noted. Meursault Les Grands Charrons: This renowned climat produces a wine that perfectly encapsulates the estate’s achievements.
