Wines from Domaine Michel Bouzereau: buy at the best price

Domaine Michel Bouzereau et Fils embodies the very essence of high-end Burgundian viticulture. Established in the village of Meursault, this family wine estate now extends across 10.5 hectares of carefully cultivated vines at the heart of the Côte de Beaune. Since 1999, Jean-Baptiste Bouzereau has been running this property with passion, perpetuating the legacy passed down by his father Michel. The estate's reputation rests primarily on its great white Burgundy wines made from the Chardonnay grape variety, true ambassadors of the Meursault appellation and its surrounding terroirs. The vineyard is structured around exceptional plots spread across Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, as well as Beaune, Volnay and Pommard for the red cuvées produced from Pinot Noir.

History of Domaine Michel Bouzereau

The viticultural history of the Bouzereau family is deeply rooted in the heritage of Meursault. The Bouzereau family has been cultivating vines in Meursault for seven generations, building over the decades a reputation for excellence recognized well beyond the borders of Burgundy. Michel Bouzereau played a decisive role in the expansion of the family estate, progressively enlarging the vineyard inherited from his ancestors to reach its current size. His meticulous work and long-term vision enabled the property to enter the exclusive circle of the great domaines of the Côte d'Or.

The generational handover took place in 1999, a pivotal year in which Jean-Baptiste Bouzereau officially took over the reins of the estate. This discreet yet tremendously talented winemaker brought a fresh perspective while scrupulously respecting the traditional methods that had built the family's renown. A new cellar allowing the wines to spend two winters in ageing, along with highly precise work, was inaugurated in 2009, marking a further step in the ongoing pursuit of quality. This new winery offers optimal conditions for vinifying and ageing each cuvée individually, respecting the natural rhythm of each parcel and each vintage.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Michel Bouzereau

The vineyard of Domaine Michel Bouzereau is built around a mosaic of prestigious terroirs, primarily concentrated on the Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet appellations. The domaine's vineyard is dominated by Chardonnay, with 10 cuvées produced across Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet, each expressing with precision the subtle nuances of its originating climat. These parcels benefit from the clay-limestone soils typical of the Côte de Beaune, rich in limestone and marl, providing the vines with optimal drainage and exceptional mineral nourishment.

The terroirs of Meursault are distinguished by their geological diversity. The climats of Les Grands Charrons, Limozin and Les Tessons form the foundation of the village appellations, offering wines of remarkable purity. The climat of Les Tessons, at the heart of the Meursault hillside, was already singled out in the 19th century with the enviable status of "Première cuvée," an early recognition of this terroir's exceptional quality. At the Premier Cru level, the domaine holds parcels in the mythical climats of Meursault-Blagny, Meursault-Charmes Dessus, Meursault-Genevrières and above all Meursault-Perrières, a true jewel acquired in 2004.

On the Puligny-Montrachet side, the domaine offers two Chardonnay Premiers Crus: Les Champs Gains and Le Cailleret. The latter, produced in confidential quantities, is one of the domaine's gems, a direct neighbor of the legendary Grand Cru Montrachet. The soils here are particularly stony and calcareous, lending the wines a vibrant minerality and exceptional tension.

The vines grow on varied soils, with plantings ranging from old vines dating back to 1938 to younger plants, allowing for greater complexity and depth in the cuvées. For the red wines, the domaine also works parcels of Pinot Noir in Pommard (climat Les Cras), Volnay (Premier Cru Les Aussy) and Beaune (Premier Cru Les Vignes Franches).

Winemaking at Domaine Michel Bouzereau

The winemaking philosophy at Domaine Michel Bouzereau rests on a fundamental principle: at the Bouzereau estate, there is a deep conviction that great wine stems first and foremost from a great harvest. This approach translates into environmentally respectful farming, avoiding chemical products and favoring a reasoned viticulture that progressively tends toward organic practices. Attentive observation of the vines throughout the vegetative cycle allows for timely intervention to obtain perfectly healthy and ripe fruit.

The harvest is entirely manual, guaranteeing rigorous selection of the grapes and respect for their integrity. This hand-harvesting, although more costly and labor-intensive, constitutes an indispensable guarantee of quality for wines of this caliber. The grapes are carefully transported to the cellar where the winemaking process proper begins.

For the white wines, the harvested grapes are gently pressed, then the musts are transferred to French oak barrels for fermentation. Winemaking is carried out without added yeasts, allowing the indigenous yeasts to fully express the character of the terroir. This minimalist approach in the cellar lets the fruit and terroir express themselves freely, without masking their personality through excessive oenological intervention. Ageing takes place on fine lees for a period ranging from 12 to 18 months depending on the cuvée, with a carefully calibrated percentage of new barrels (generally between 20% and 30% for the Premiers Crus) in order to bring structure and complexity without dominating the expression of the wine.

For the red cuvées, the Pinot Noir grapes are destemmed and undergo a cold maceration before fermenting with indigenous yeasts. Ageing then takes place in oak barrels for 12 to 16 months, followed by a few months in tank before bottling. This method allows for the gentle extraction of tannins and aromatic compounds, producing elegant red wines with silky tannins.

The domaine's wines diverge from the current trend of toasty minerality to focus on a style in which elegance and purity prevail, as experts emphasize. This stylistic signature makes Domaine Michel Bouzereau a benchmark for the purchase of classic Burgundian wines, favoring finesse over power, balance over exuberance.

The Cuvées of Domaine Michel Bouzereau

Meursault Les Grands Charrons: This renowned climat produces a wine that perfectly embodies the domaine's success. Intense and luminous, oscillating between subtle floral notes and a resolutely spicy, invigorating dimension, it offers on the palate a pure and flavorful fruitiness, with that characteristic minerality of Meursault's great terroirs.

Meursault Le Limozin: A village cuvée of great purity, expressing the classic characteristics of Meursault with its velvety texture and aromas of white-fleshed fruits, lifted by a typical buttery touch of the appellation.

Meursault Les Tessons: Les Tessons proves to be upright, elegant, endowed with a fine minerality, and would have richly deserved a Premier Cru classification. Perfectly balanced between the dense flesh of the fruit and stony minerality, this wine offers remarkable length and great ageing potential.

Meursault-Blagny Premier Cru: Located on the heights of Meursault, this climat produces more taut and mineral wines. A fine smoky then iodine-tinged minerality, fleshy fruitiness and indulgent flavors of nougat and gingerbread characterize this exceptional cuvée.

Meursault-Charmes Dessus Premier Cru: The bouquet of this Meursault Premier Cru Les Charmes is radiant, precise and refined, with great aromatic complexity, offering notes of butter and fresh hazelnut, rubbed stone and pepper. Located between Les Combettes de Puligny to the north and the mythical Perrières to the east, this parcel benefits from an exceptional terroir.

Meursault-Genevrières Premier Cru: This Genevrières stands out for its brilliant, golden color, while the nose is sumptuous, releasing very floral aromas such as eucalyptus, linden blossom and wild herbs. Assertive minerality evoking gunflint, notes of fresh almond and honey combine in a wine of evident class, with a taut and airy structure.

Meursault-Perrières Premier Cru: The domaine's holy grail, acquired in 2004. One of the two diamonds of the domaine, barely half a hectare of old vines planted primarily in 1938. This emblematic climat, often considered the finest in Meursault, produces here a wine of prodigious intensity, evoking spray-battered cliffs, sea purslane and grey pepper, as well as violet, almond powder, pear and nectarine. An absolute pinnacle available for purchase for discerning collectors.

Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru Les Champs Gains: A great Puligny, of extraordinary elegance, sensual and lingering, with an elegant nose in a floral and dried-fruit register. Located just above Les Folatières, this climat offers a great balance between minerality and richness, characteristic of the Puligny-Montrachet appellation.

Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru Le Cailleret: The domaine's rarest gem, produced in only a few hundred bottles per year. A direct neighbor of the Grand Cru Montrachet, this wine reaching the summits of the Côte de Beaune is distinguished by its spellbinding sophistication, its infinitely silky mouthfeel and its vibrant minerality that engages all the senses. An absolute collector's piece for any enthusiast wishing to purchase the pinnacle of Burgundian excellence.

Red Wines

Pommard Les Cras: The intense ruby-red color reveals a highly expressive nose, whose aromas of flowers and red and black fruits blend beautifully with spicy notes. The powerful, fleshy palate reveals a superb balance between fine tannins and indulgent aromas of black cherry, with a lingering, fruity finish.

Volnay Premier Cru Les Aussy: A red wine of great finesse, typical of Volnay's elegance with its silky tannins and airy structure. Aromas of fresh red fruits mingle with gentle spices to create a harmonious whole.

Beaune Premier Cru Les Vignes Franches: Completing the red range, this cuvée accurately expresses the character of Beaune's Pinot Noir, combining generous fruit with a well-balanced structure.
