Domaine Henri Germain is an undisputed reference in the world of Burgundy wines, particularly for its Meursault and Chassagne-Montrachet. Founded in 1973 by Henri Germain, this family estate embodies the authenticity and viticultural tradition of Burgundy. With only 7 hectares of vines, the estate produces wines of exceptional quality, recognized for their finesse, complexity and ability to age with elegance. Now led by Jean-François Germain, assisted by his daughter Lucie, the estate combines ancestral expertise with modern practices, including a conversion to biodynamics since 2021.

History of Domaine Henri Germain & Fils

Founded in 1973 by Henri Germain, descendant of the prestigious family of Château de Chorey-les-Beaune, the estate has undergone a remarkable evolution through strategic family alliances. The history of the estate takes a decisive turn when Henri married Paulette Pillot, heiress to precious plots in Chassagne-Montrachet, particularly in the prestigious climat of Les Fairendes in Morgeot. 

The estate was further enriched through the marriage of Jean-François Germain to Sophie Jobard, a union that brought a magnificent plot in Meursault-Poruzots Premier Cru. Today, the third generation is represented by Lucie Germain, who joined her father Jean-François in 2018, thus perpetuating the family legacy while bringing a new dynamic, particularly through the conversion to biodynamics initiated in 2021.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Henri Germain & Fils

The estate today cultivates approximately 9 hectares of vines, spread across three prestigious communes of the Côte de Beaune: Meursault, Chassagne-Montrachet and Beaune. The majority of the vineyard is dedicated to white wines (75% of production), with exceptionally well-situated plots.

In Meursault, the estate owns remarkable plots:

- Les Perrières Premier Cru (0.16 hectares): 1950s vines on stony limestone soils

- Les Charmes Premier Cru: six plots mainly located in the upper part, adjacent to the Puligny Premier Cru

- Les Poruzots Premier Cru: 0.25 hectares of thirty-year-old vines in the Poruzot Dessus sector

- Le Limozin: eighty-year-old vines on clay-limestone soils

- Les Chevalières: an exceptional limestone terroir overlooking the village

- Le Clos des Mouches: monopole of 0.5 hectares planted with Pinot Noir in 1949

Winemaking at Domaine Henri Germain & Fils

The estate's winemaking philosophy is based on a non-interventionist approach, allowing the pure expression of the terroir. The estate's exceptionally cold cellars, true sanctuaries lined with penicillium, play a decisive role in crafting wines of remarkable stability and great ageing potential.

For white wines:

Manual harvesting with rigorous sorting

Direct pressing without prior crushing

Spontaneous alcoholic fermentation with indigenous yeasts

Particularly long fermentations (3 to 12 months) due to the low temperatures of the cellars

Ageing on fine lees without bâtonnage

Ageing duration: 18 months for village wines, 22 months for premiers crus

Sparing use of new oak (20–30%), primarily Damy, Seguin-Moreau and Rousseau barrels

No racking when the lees are clean, promoting aromatic complexity

Bottling without filtration or fining depending on the vintage

For red wines:

Manual harvesting with strict sorting

Traditional winemaking with near-systematic destemming

Partial use of whole bunches (up to 25%) during great vintages

Long and gentle maceration

Ageing in Rousseau and François Frères barrels

Moderate proportion of new oak (maximum 20%)

This minimalist approach, combined with the patience of the Germain family, makes it possible to craft wines of great purity, faithfully reflecting their original terroirs while developing exceptional complexity and depth over time.

The cuvées of Domaine Henri Germain & Fils

White Wines:

Meursault-Perrières Premier Cru

The estate's iconic plot (0.16 hectares), planted in the 1950s on a particularly stony and fine limestone soil. This wine embodies the excellence of Meursault's great terroirs, offering chiselled minerality, remarkable tension and exceptional depth. The silky texture is accompanied by notes of candied citrus, flint and fresh almonds.

Meursault-Charmes Premier Cru

Sourced from six distinct plots, mainly located in the upper part of the climat, in close proximity to the Puligny Premier Cru. The thirty-year-old vines produce a wine of great breadth, combining richness and freshness. The complex bouquet reveals aromas of ripe white fruits, acacia honey and fresh hazelnut.

Meursault-Poruzots Premier Cru

A 0.25-hectare plot located in the prized Poruzot Dessus sector, inherited from the Jobard family. This wine combines richness and tension, with a distinctive mineral backbone and the buttery notes characteristic of great Meursault.

Meursault Limozin

From seventy-year-old vines planted on silty clay-limestone soils, this village wine reveals intensity and depth. The creamy texture balances perfectly with an invigorating acidity.

Meursault Chevalières

An exceptional limestone terroir overlooking the village, producing a wine of remarkable precision. The mineral tension and characteristic vivacity of the lieu-dit are fully expressed through the meticulous work of the Germain family.

Chassagne-Montrachet Morgeot Premier Cru Les Fairendes

Located in the finest sector of Morgeot, on poor white soils above the main road. A wine of great breed, combining power and elegance.

Red Wines:

Meursault Clos des Mouches Monopole

A unique monopole of 0.5 hectares planted in 1949 with Pinot Fin, located near Volnay. The extremely low yields (less than 25 hl/ha) produce a wine of rare concentration, with silky tannins and aromatic complexity.

Beaune Bressandes Premier Cru

Vines planted between 1960 and 1965 on brown clay soils, giving rise to a structured and deep wine that requires a minimum of 5–6 years of cellaring to fully open up.

Savigny-lès-Beaune Premier Cru Aux Gravains

The estate's latest acquisition, 0.6 hectares of fifty-year-old vines rooted in alluvial gravel over limestone, producing a red wine of exceptional finesse.
