The history of Château Kirwan

The history of Château Kirwan begins in 1710, when Sir John Collingwood, a respected English merchant based in Bordeaux, purchased the estate. Then known as Château de La Salle, the estate reached a turning point when Sir John’s daughter married an Irish wine merchant named Mark Kirwan in 1760. Kirwan took over the property and, in 1775, decided to rename the estate after himself, giving Château Kirwan its name.

The property’s reputation soon grew. In 1787, Thomas Jefferson, then the U.S. ambassador to France and a future president, ranked “Quirouen,” as he called it, among the second-tier great crus during his visit to the region. This prestigious endorsement further enhanced the reputation of Kirwan, already recognized for the quality of its wines. Over the centuries, the estate changed hands several times. In 1925, it was acquired by the Schÿler family, an influential Bordeaux wine merchant family. Château Kirwan has remained in their hands ever since; they have modernized the estate while preserving its winemaking tradition.

Terroirs and vines of Château Kirwan

Château Kirwan now covers 37 hectares on the Left Bank, with a vineyard particularly well situated on the gravelly Cantenac plateau in the south of the Margaux appellation. This prime location benefits from exceptional terroir composed of deep gravel and clay-limestone soils, providing excellent drainage for grape growing and allowing the grape varieties to thrive.

The vineyard is planted with 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 8% Petit Verdot. This subtle blend produces wines of great aromatic complexity, typical of the Margaux style, combining elegance, finesse and depth. The vines average 37 years of age, helping maintain consistent wine quality. The plots are tended with the utmost care, and a high planting density of 10,000 vines per hectare helps concentrate flavor in the grapes while preserving the estate’s biodiversity.

Winemaking at Château Kirwan

The winemaking process at Château Kirwan balances tradition and modernity. The Schÿler family has undertaken major renovations to the estate’s facilities, including a new state-of-the-art winery inaugurated in 2017. It enables plot-by-plot vinification, a key process for expressing the full richness of the terroir.

Château Kirwan practices co-inoculation, a technique in which alcoholic and malolactic fermentation take place simultaneously, helping the aromas integrate more fully and giving the wines greater freshness. The wines are then aged for 18 to 20 months in French oak barrels, 40% of which are new, to add complexity and structure without masking the fruit’s natural characteristics. 

Renowned enologist Eric Boissenot, alongside Philippe Delfaut, the estate’s technical director since 2008, works to maintain a refined, balanced style that emphasizes fruit purity and freshness. This meticulous attention to detail in the winemaking process allows Château Kirwan to produce wines that age beautifully while remaining approachable in their youth.

Château Kirwan cuvées

Château Kirwan produces several cuvées, the most emblematic being its fine wine, followed by its second wine. Each vintage reflects the estate’s expertise and commitment to excellence.

Château Kirwan (fine wine): This Margaux Third Growth stands out for its balance and complexity. Cabernet Sauvignon generally dominates the blend, bringing powerful aromas of black fruit, cedar and spice, supported by silky tannins and a long finish. The 2020 vintage, for example, has been praised for its vibrancy and structure, while the 2021 charms with its finesse and freshness, offering juicy red-fruit notes and a saline finish.

Les Charmes de Kirwan (second wine): Since 1993, the estate has produced this more accessible second wine, whose fruit-forward, approachable character has won admirers. Blended from the estate’s younger vines, it offers an appealing introduction to the house style at a more affordable price. The 2020 Les Charmes de Kirwan, for example, is already showing aromas of ripe red fruit and a pleasing freshness on the palate.

Le blanc de Kirwan: In 2023, Château Kirwan broke new ground by producing a 100% Chardonnay white wine, a rarity in a region known for its reds. Made through meticulous winemaking, this white wine offers a distinctive aromatic expression with notes of white fruit and elegant minerality.
