A great wine at the heart of the Margaux terroir - Third Grand Cru Classé
Château Desmirail, Third Grand Cru Classé in 1855, embodies the excellence of Margaux wines. Located in the heart of the Médoc, this prestigious property is a perfect marriage between viticultural tradition and modernity. For over thirty years, Denis Lurton, heir to a long line of winemakers, has successfully transformed this property into an essential estate, modernizing his techniques while respecting ancestral traditions. Each cuvée from Château Desmirail expresses the elegance and finesse that characterize the Margaux appellation, offering wines to be enjoyed young or after long aging.

Founded in the 18th century by Jean-Baptiste Desmirail, this estate traces its origins to 1741 when he inherited vineyard plots following his marriage to Marguerite Rauzan du Ribail. The name Desmirail quickly became synonymous with quality and tradition in the Médoc region. The château gained international recognition in 1855, when it was classified as a third Grand Cru at the Universal Exhibition in Paris, under the direction of Joseph Théophile Sipière, manager of Château Margaux.
However, the history of Desmirail has not always been smooth sailing. In the 20th century, the estate underwent several upheavals, changing hands multiple times. Robert de Mendelssohn, nephew of the famous composer, and the company Château Palmer were among the estate's illustrious owners before it fell into dormancy, its vines being absorbed into neighbouring estates. It was not until 1980 that Lucien Lurton, a towering figure in the Bordeaux wine world, revived Château Desmirail. Lucien, at the head of a vast viticultural heritage, entrusted the reins of the estate to his son Denis Lurton in 1992, who continues today to bring renown to this classified Grand Cru.
The terroir of Château Desmirail is exceptional. Located on the left bank, it benefits from the deep gravel soils typical of the Médoc, which allow Bordeaux grape varieties to flourish fully. The estate spans 40 hectares spread across three distinct communes: Margaux-Cantenac, Soussans and Arsac. Each of these areas brings a unique complexity to the château's wines thanks to the diversity of soils and microclimates. For example, the 9 hectares of Margaux-Cantenac are surrounded by prestigious crus such as Château Brane-Cantenac and Château Palmer, further reinforcing the reputation of the terroir.
The Desmirail vineyard is planted with four of the classic Bordeaux grape varieties:
Cabernet Sauvignon (50% of the plots): This is the emblematic grape variety that gives the wine its backbone and longevity.
Merlot (40%): Bringing roundness and fruitiness, it balances the structure of the Cabernet Sauvignon.
Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc (10%): These two grape varieties play the role of spices, adding aromatic nuances and a touch of complexity.
Respect for nature is at the heart of the reasoned viticulture philosophy applied by Denis Lurton. Upon his arrival, he banned all chemical weeding and promoted environmentally friendly agricultural practices, which allowed the estate to obtain the Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE) certification in 2018.
The winemaking process at Château Desmirail is a fusion of traditional expertise and innovation. After carefully conducted manual harvests, the grapes are rigorously sorted. Vinification takes place in wooden vats for the oldest plots, while grapes from the other plots are fermented in stainless steel vats. This combination preserves the purity of the fruit while ensuring a controlled and measured extraction of tannins.
Mystery and the art of blending are at the heart of the creation of Desmirail's wines. The blend consists of marrying the different grape varieties from the various plots, under the supervision of oenologist Éric Boissenot. After malolactic fermentation in vat, the wine is aged in oak barrels for 12 to 18 months, of which 50% are new barrels. This wood-ageing process helps to round out the tannins and gives Desmirail's wines their velvety texture.
Château Desmirail offers several cuvées, each representing a unique expression of its terroir and viticultural expertise:
Château Desmirail
The estate's flagship wine, Château Desmirail, is an elegant and refined Margaux, crafted from the oldest vines on the estate. It is distinguished by its complex bouquet, with aromas of dark fruits, violet, and liquorice, accompanied by notes of toasted oak. It can be enjoyed from an early age thanks to its silky tannins, but it improves after a few years of ageing, developing more complex flavours.
Initial de Desmirail - Origine de Desmirail
The second wine of the Château, this cuvée comes from the estate's young vines. Known in France as Initial de Desmirail and internationally as Origine de Desmirail, this wine is perfect for drinking within the first ten years after the harvest. More approachable than the grand vin, it nonetheless displays great finesse with fruity and spiced notes.
Iris Pourpre de Desmirail
Produced in the Haut-Médoc appellation, the Iris Pourpre de Desmirail is a cuvée that echoes the estate's tradition of excellence, while distinguishing itself through its younger and more expressive character. The name of this cuvée pays homage to a Friesian mare, the mascot of the property. This wine is vinified with the same care as the other Desmirail cuvées and offers aromas of red fruits, plum and violet, perfect for more immediate enjoyment.
Château Fontarney
Château Fontarney is a second wine of the estate, distributed primarily in France. It shares the same winemaking philosophy as the Initial de Desmirail, with a slightly more approachable profile, while reflecting the elegance and finesse of the Margaux terroir.
