A Scottish heritage at the heart of Margaux - Third Grand Cru Classé
Château Cantenac Brown, a name synonymous with elegance and viticultural expertise, is a jewel of the prestigious Margaux terroir in the Médoc. Third Grand Cru Classé in 1855, this estate combines tradition, innovation and respect for nature. With a rich history and a reputation for exceptional age-worthy wines, it stands out for its commitment to quality, the environment and the continuity of a centuries-old heritage.
The history of Château Cantenac Brown begins in the early nineteenth century with the Scotsman John-Lewis Brown, a visionary with a love of nature and great wines. In 1806, he acquired land in Cantenac and had a spectacular château built there, inspired by Tudor architecture, a style unique to the Bordeaux region. Passionate about art and nature, Brown, a member of the Scottish clan of Colstoun, cultivated a spirit of community and family that endures at the estate to this day. His motto "floreat majestas" ("May the flower flourish") reflects a deep respect for nature and the long-term vision he applied to viticulture.
His grandson, a celebrated naturalist painter, grew up in this unique setting and transformed it into an artistic haven where painters such as Degas, Manet, Pissarro and Toulouse-Lautrec came to seek inspiration. Although Brown was forced to sell the estate in 1843 to a banker, it was in 1855 that the Château received its ultimate recognition by becoming a Troisième Grand Cru Classé, an acknowledgment of the quality of its terroirs and the work accomplished.
Today, it is the French Le Lous family, led by Tristan Le Lous, who carries on this legacy. An agronomist and passionate wine enthusiast, Tristan Le Lous works hand in hand with José Sanfins, the long-standing technical director. Together, they have initiated a new chapter in the estate's history with ambitious projects, such as the construction of an eco-responsible winery, a true architectural achievement.
The vineyard of Château Cantenac Brown extends over 75 hectares on the left bank, spread across the prestigious plateaus of Cantenac and Margaux. This diversity of terroirs allows for great richness in the blends and gives the wines a consistency and depth, year after year.
The soils of the estate are composed of gravel, typical of the Médoc region, which promotes excellent drainage, essential for the cultivation of noble grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. The climate, tempered by the proximity of the Gironde estuary, contributes to the slow ripening of the grapes, thus ensuring harvests of optimal quality.
The vineyard is cultivated with a deep respect for the environment, an approach encouraged by sustainable practices and integrated pest management methods. The fertilizers used are of plant origin and eco-grazing is implemented to maintain certain parts of the estate, thus creating a true ecosystem in harmony with the local fauna and flora. Cantenac Brown also houses an arboretum garden, planted with several rare species such as bicentennial sequoias and Atlas cedars, testifying to the strong bond between the estate and nature.
At Château Cantenac Brown, winemaking is an art, a delicate balance between tradition and modernity. The process begins with meticulously carried out harvests, plot by plot, in order to pick each grape at perfect ripeness.
The grapes are then transferred into stainless steel tanks, with capacities ranging from 50 to 120 hectoliters, allowing for precise winemaking for each individual plot. After fermentation, the wine is aged in French oak barrels (of which 60% are new casks) for 12 to 15 months, depending on the vintage. This careful attention to barrel selection and aging duration imparts remarkable finesse and structure to the wines of Château Cantenac Brown, while honoring the aging potential inherent to this Grand Cru.
The estate is also committed to a sustainable approach with the construction, in 2023, of a new winery built entirely from raw earth and unfinished wood. This innovation, based on traditional techniques such as pisé, ensures natural thermal insulation, essential for aging wines under optimal conditions while reducing the environmental impact.
Château Cantenac Brown
The estate's flagship wine, Château Cantenac Brown, is the ultimate expression of the Margaux terroir. This radiant, fleshy and velvety wine is marked by the freshness of its fruit and an impressive density. Its exceptionally refined tannins give it outstanding aging potential. Over the years, the aromas of red and black fruits evolve toward more spiced notes, offering on the palate a tension and opulence that make it one of the most sought-after age-worthy wines in the region. Vintages at their peak reveal a unique aromatic complexity, with an elegant and lingering finish.
BriO de Cantenac Brown
The estate's second wine, BriO de Cantenac Brown, is a more approachable wine, both charming and delicate. Ideal for moments of sharing, it is ready to be enjoyed young, while also offering good aging potential. With its aromas of raspberries and red fruits, it captivates with its freshness and appeal. BriO is the perfect choice for lovers of easy-drinking wines who wish to discover the finesse of Margaux without waiting decades.
AltO de Cantenac Brown
AltO is the white wine of Château Cantenac Brown, produced in small quantities. It stands out for its minerality and vibrant aromas of white fruits, such as pear and peach, with a subtle hint of flint. Suave and refreshing, AltO is an elegant wine, ideal to accompany seafood dishes or fish. This wine reflects the diversity of the estate and its ability to excel in both red and white.
