Mourgues du Grès

Château Mourgues du Grès wines: buy at the best price

Château Mourgues du Grès is one of the most admired and consistent references of the Costières de Nîmes appellation, in the Gard. Nestled between Arles, Avignon and Nîmes, among vines, garrigue, orchards and cypresses, this 65-hectare estate owes its name to a dual history: the "Mourgues" are the Ursuline nuns of Beaucaire who cultivated these lands as early as the 16th century, and the "Grès" refers to the rounded pebbles that cover the soils, emblems of the Costières de Nîmes. Taken over in 1990 by François Collard, an agronomist engineer and oenologist trained at Château-Lafite in the Médoc, the estate produced its first bottling in 1993. Since then, with his wife Anne and their son Romain, François has built a solid international reputation, recognised by the Guide Hachette des Vins, the Revue des Vins de France, Bettane et Desseauve and Robert Parker. Certified Organic Agriculture in 2014 and Demeter (biodynamics) across the entire vineyard, the château has been vinifying with minimal sulphur additions since 2015. The motto engraved on a sundial on the estate says it all: "Sine Sole Nihil" — nothing without the sun.

History of Château Mourgues du Grès

The history of Château Mourgues du Grès dates back to the 16th century, when the Ursulines of Beaucaire, known as "Mourgues" in Provençal, developed this agricultural estate on the galet-covered hillsides at the entrance to the Gorges du Gard. The buildings, including a beautiful vaulted room that today houses a cultural space dedicated to contemporary art, bear witness to this monastic history. The "grès" that give the second half of the name refer to the galets deposited by the glacial moraine of the Rhône during the Quaternary era, nearly 2 million years ago, which are characteristic of the Costières de Nîmes terroir.

In the late 1980s, Costières de Nîmes became an appellation d'origine contrôlée. François and Anne Collard, who were based in Bordeaux where François had honed his craft at Château-Lafite in the Médoc, saw the opportunity to return to the family estate and unlock the potential of this then little-known terroir. François returned to the domaine in 1990 with the conviction that the potential of the galets was immense: "Confident in the potential of the terroir and the prospects offered by the new Costières de Nîmes Appellation, I seek to reveal the purity of the fruit, for wines that combine richness and minerality." The first bottling dates from 1993. Only reds were produced in the early years, then rosé followed in 1996, and finally white wine in the early 2000s, which today represents 20% of production. Their son Romain has joined the estate to carry on the legacy and bring his creativity to the range.

Terroirs and Vines of Château Mourgues du Grès

The vineyard of Château Mourgues du Grès spans 65 hectares of vines, planted on the terraces and hillsides of the Costières de Nîmes between Beaucaire and the Rhône. The soils are characterized by a thick layer of rounded pebbles (galets) in varied hues — ferric red, golden, and slate grey — resting on argilo-calcareous marl. These galets, deposited by the glacial moraine of the Rhône some 2 million years ago, absorb solar heat during the day and gradually release it at night, promoting slow and harmonious ripening of the grapes. They also retain moisture at depth, allowing the roots to draw on water and minerals without excess. The Mistral, the dominant wind in the area, dries out the atmosphere and naturally protects the vines from disease, contributing to the freshness and aromatic purity of the wines.

The grape varieties are rich and diverse: for reds, Syrah, Grenache Noir, Carignan, Mourvèdre and Marselan; for whites, Roussanne, Grenache Blanc, Vermentino, Viognier, and Petit Manseng for certain cuvées. Biodynamic farming is practiced across the entire vineyard (Demeter certified), with sheep grazing between the rows for natural maintenance and fertilization. A "Nature and Landscape" trail marked with digital posts allows visitors to discover the history, geology and botany of the estate.

Winemaking at Château Mourgues du Grès

François Collard vinifies with a low-interventionist approach, guided by the purity of the fruit and the minerality of the galets. For the reds, a cold maceration precedes fermentation to extract aromas at low temperature before initiating alcoholic fermentation. Harvesting takes place in the early morning to preserve the freshness of the grapes. Ageing is carried out in stainless steel vats, concrete vats or barrels depending on the cuvée, without seeking excessive oak influence. Since 2015, vinifications have been conducted with low sulphur additions for greater purity and vibrancy of fruit. A very light filtration at bottling ensures stability. For the whites, north-facing plot exposure contributes to natural freshness, and fermentation and ageing temperatures are carefully controlled to preserve the fruity aromas and minerality of the golden galets.

The cuvées of Château Mourgues du Grès

Les Galets Rouges (AOP Costières de Nîmes Rouge): The estate's emblematic red cuvée, a tribute to the red rounded galets characteristic of the Costières de Nîmes. A blend of Syrah (dominant), Grenache, with a touch of Marselan and Mourvèdre depending on the vintage. Cold maceration, aged in vats. Deep ruby color with violet highlights. A deep, vibrant nose of blackberry and crunchy blackcurrant. A generous and indulgent palate, with silky tannins interweaving red fruit, liquorice and violet. A mineral finish characteristic of the galet terroir. The estate's best-known introductory cuvée, regularly selected by the international press.

Les Galets Rosés (AOP Costières de Nîmes Rosé): A rosé cuvée made from the same grape varieties as Les Galets Rouges, vinified by direct pressing to express the freshness and delicacy of the fruit. Luminous pale rosé color, nose of small red fruits and flowers, light, tonic and airy palate with floral aromas. A Mediterranean rosé of great freshness, true to the minerality of the galets.

Les Galets Dorés (AOP Costières de Nîmes Blanc): A white cuvée made from a blend of four grape varieties: Roussanne, Vermentino, Grenache Blanc and Viognier, grown on north-facing plots to preserve freshness. Aged without oak. "These golden galets celebrate the successful marriage between a soil of golden-hued rounded pebbles and the four grape varieties." An inviting nose of stone fruit, freesia and green hazelnut. A lively, broad and indulgent palate with a fine, textured astringency. A highly drinkable white of beautiful minerality.

Capitelles Rouge (AOP Costières de Nîmes Rouge): A prestige red cuvée named in reference to the traditional dry-stone shelters of the Mediterranean vineyard. A blend of Grenache and Syrah from the finest plots, with a longer ageing in vats and/or barrels. A more concentrated and structured red wine than Les Galets, with greater aromatic depth and ageing potential. Deep garnet color, aromas of dark fruits, spices and garrigue, with a broad and warming palate.

Capitelles Blanc (AOP Costières de Nîmes Blanc): A prestige white cuvée made from Roussanne, Grenache Blanc and Viognier, partially aged in oak for added complexity and roundness. An opulent, floral white wine with aromas of white and yellow fruits, flowers and well-integrated oak. A gastronomic white of great breadth.

Capitelles Rosé (AOP Costières de Nîmes Rosé): A prestige rosé cuvée, more complex and structured than Les Galets Rosés. Sourced from a selection of plots and crafted with greater care, it expresses a more developed aromatic profile, with hints of candied red fruits, flowers and spices. A gastronomic rosé to accompany more elaborate dishes.

Equinox (AOP Costières de Nîmes): The estate's top-of-the-range red cuvée, produced only in the finest vintages, drawn from a selection of the best barrels and oldest Grenache and Syrah vines. A red wine of exceptional depth and complexity for the appellation, with well-integrated oak and remarkable longevity. The château's most exclusive and ambitious cuvée.

Cuve 46 (AOP Costières de Nîmes Rouge): A red cuvée drawn from a particular vat selected for its personality and exceptional quality. Produced in very limited quantities, it expresses the singularity of a specific plot or blend in a given vintage. A collector's wine for enthusiasts of the estate.

Terre d'Argence Rouge (IGP Pont du Gard): A red cuvée under IGP Pont du Gard, made from old-vine Grenache and Syrah, blended with Carignan or Mourvèdre depending on the vintage. A deep and powerful red wine, with intense aromas of dark fruits, spices and garrigue, and a generous tannic structure. The cuvée that steps outside the framework of the appellation to explore a freer style.

Terre d'Argence Blanc (IGP Pont du Gard): A white cuvée under IGP Pont du Gard, made from a blend of Viognier complemented by Petit Manseng, Roussanne and Grenache Blanc depending on the vintage. An aromatic and opulent white wine, with notes of exotic fruits, flowers and spices, with a beautiful richness on the palate balanced by a characteristic freshness.

Fleur d'Eglantine (AOP Costières de Nîmes Rosé): A rosé cuvée named in reference to the flora of the vineyard, in a fresh and floral style. Pale rosé color, notes of rose and small red fruits on the nose, with a light and refreshing palate. The lightest and most accessible rosé cuvée from the estate.

Fleur d'Aubépine (IGP Pont du Gard Blanc): A small-production white cuvée under IGP Pont du Gard, made from white grape varieties atypical for the region, in a highly original aromatic and fruity style. "Our personal favourite" according to visitors to the estate, ideal paired with chocolate pastries or exotic dishes.

Terre de Feu (AOP Costières de Nîmes Rouge): A red cuvée whose evocative name conjures the scorching summers and incandescent galets of the Costières, in a powerful and sun-drenched style. Made from Grenache and Syrah on the warmest plots of the estate. A generous and warming red wine, with aromas of candied dark fruits, spices and liquorice.
