Nestled in Uchizy, in the northern Mâconnais, Domaine Alexandre Jouveaux produces some of the rarest and most singular cuvées in Burgundy. A former fashion photographer for the house of Chanel, Alexandre Jouveaux left everything behind in 1999 to devote himself to the vine and wine, with one obsession: letting the terroir speak for itself, without artifice. His chardonnays, aged for many years in large oak barrels and vinified without additives, achieve a mineral purity rarely matched in the region. With only 6,000 bottles produced each year, the estate's wines are among the most sought-after cuvées by lovers of great white Burgundies and natural wines around the world.
The story of Domaine Alexandre Jouveaux is one of a magnificent and radical reinvention. Originally from Saint-Chinian, in the Languedoc, Alexandre Jouveaux first studied Fine Arts before becoming a fashion photographer in Paris, notably for the house of Chanel. At the end of the 1990s, he decided to leave everything behind to move to Burgundy and embrace the craft of winemaking. In 1995, he left the capital, taught for a few years at the local oenology school, then acquired in 1999 his first plots in the small village of Uchizy, north of Mâcon. This was the starting point of a confidential, demanding and deeply personal viticultural adventure.
Allergic to sulphites from the very beginning, Alexandre Jouveaux naturally opts for viticulture without additives and winemaking of the utmost purity. Put off by the administrative burden associated with appellations, he chooses to label almost his entire production as Vin de France, refusing the Mâcon designation despite being fully entitled to it. This deliberate stance, combined with intentionally low yields and very long ageing, today shapes the domaine's international reputation, celebrated as far afield as Japan, Belgium, Denmark and the United States, and admired by Burgundy's greatest winemakers.
The vineyard of Domaine Alexandre Jouveaux covers approximately two and a half hectares, fragmented into very small plots spread across the communes of Uchizy, Prety, Viré and Tournus, in the heart of the Burgundian Mâconnais. The vines, some of which are a century old, are surrounded by forests and hillsides, within a preserved ecosystem that encourages the finest expression of the terroir. The soils, predominantly clay-limestone, lend the wines that signature of tension, chalky minerality and purity that characterises the great chardonnays of the region.
The domaine's undisputed king grape variety is chardonnay, planted on the vast majority of the plots, complemented by a few rows of pinot noir and gamay destined for the red cuvée. The vines are tended according to the principles of organic farming, with the care of a gardener: manual harvesting in small crates, extremely low yields, soil work reduced to the strict minimum and gentle interventions respectful of natural balances. This patient, almost contemplative philosophy yields grapes of perfect ripeness and exemplary concentration.
Winemaking at Alexandre Jouveaux is an exercise in extreme patience and non-intervention. Once harvested by hand, the grapes are pressed as they are in an old hydraulic press. The resulting juice is immediately placed in large 1,200-litre foudres, where it will rest on its lees for years — sometimes up to seven — without topping up or racking. Alcoholic fermentations are conducted solely by indigenous yeasts and can stretch over several seasons, which would terrify any conventional oenologist but is precisely the domaine's signature.
No additives are used, with sulphur employed in infinitesimal doses or even absent depending on the cuvée. Bottling is done manually, by gravity, directly from the foudres, without fining or filtration. This minimalist approach, heir to the Rancio techniques dear to the winemaker's homeland, gives birth to atypical chardonnays, marked by a slight oxidative touch, an electric tension and an exceptional ageing capacity. The wines demand time: Alexandre Jouveaux likes to say that they need as many years in the bottle as they spent in the foudre.
Le Mont is one of the domaine's emblematic cuvées. Sourced from chardonnay grown on clay-limestone soils, this white wine classified as Vin de France stands out for its cutting purity, a minerality honed like a blade and a mouth-watering tension. It is often the perfect entry point into the winemaker's universe — at once accessible and already highly expressive of his style.
Prety takes its name from the neighbouring village where the vines that produce it are planted. This chardonnay vinified as a Vin de France offers a broader, more enveloping profile, with superb concentration and a delicately oxidative aromatic character. Often mute upon opening, it requires aeration and patience to reveal the full extent of its mineral and fruity complexity.
Combarnier, sometimes spelled Combardier, was born in 2010 and quickly established itself as one of the domaine's most sought-after cuvées. This chardonnay of great depth plays on finesse, aromatic complexity and an elegant texture on the palate. It is a meditation wine, built for ageing, which marvellously expresses the extended ageing in foudre.
La Vigne du Clou is another white gem from the domaine, sourced from chardonnay on a confidential single plot. The wine captivates with its aromatic precision, saline straightforwardness and chiselled minerality. With its slightly oxidative nose and taut palate, it is an atypical white that perfectly embodies the winemaker's singular genius.
O (O12, O14, O15, O17, O21) is a series of vintage cuvées that represents the absolute pinnacle of the range. These chardonnays are aged without topping up, in the manner of the great oxidative wines of the Jura or the Rancios of the Languedoc. They develop a high-calibre minerality, a dizzying aromatic complexity blending dried fruits, spices and notes of stone, and an infinite length. True meditation wines, they rank among the finest white bottles produced in Burgundy today.
L'Orme is the domaine's red cuvée, crafted from a blend of pinot noir and gamay sourced from the oldest vines. Light, fresh and crunchy, this wine captivates with its freshness, vibrant fruit and remarkable drinkability. It offers a sensitive and natural expression of the red grape varieties of the Mâconnais, in keeping with the same philosophy of minimal intervention as the domaine's whites.
