La Terrasse d'Elise is one of the most discreet and admired addresses in the Languedoc. Founded in 1998 by Xavier Braujou around the village of Aniane, between Saint-Jean-de-Fos and the Terrasses du Larzac, this artisan estate has established itself as an absolute reference thanks to a radical choice: crafting single-varietal cuvées of exceptional finesse, from old vines and minuscule yields. Free from the appellation system, the winemaker produces wines that sparkle with fruit, freshness and delicacy, prized by the greatest sommeliers and wine merchants.
The story of La Terrasse d'Elise is one of an atypical and passionate journey. In 1998, Xavier Braujou, a former lumberjack and son of a winegrower, took over the family estate and started with barely half a hectare of old syrah vines around Aniane, the heartland of the Languedoc's great wines. That same year, he left the cooperative system and produced his first cuvée, Elise, which was an immediate success. A tireless worker, he financed the expansion of his estate for several years through a parallel occupation, before devoting himself entirely to his vines.
From 2001, Xavier Braujou gradually expanded his vineyard by purchasing plots of cinsault and carignan, then by clearing and replanting garrigue and old vines through sheer hard work. The estate now covers around twenty hectares, worked as a family with his daughter and son. Having gone from being an outlier to a figurehead of the Languedoc revival, the winemaker is recognised for having restored the reputation of cinsault, carignan, and mourvèdre — long confined to the role of blending varieties. Acclaimed by critics and the Revue du Vin de France, the wines of La Terrasse d'Elise are among the most sought-after in the entire region.
The terroir of La Terrasse d'Elise extends across the great viticultural areas between Aniane and Saint-Jean-de-Fos, notably on the Brousses, in the eastern part of the Terrasses du Larzac. This high-quality terroir, neighbouring some of the Languedoc's most mythical estates, offers ideal conditions for the expression of wines with a strong identity — at once fresh and deep. The soils are tended with great care, in respect of living matter.
The estate rests on a precious heritage of old vines — carignan, mourvèdre, syrah, and cinsault — often trained as gobelet and preserved at a time when many were uprooting them. Xavier Braujou manages the entire vineyard according to the principles of organic and biodynamic farming, without seeking certification, convinced that daily respect for the vine takes precedence over any label. Yields are deliberately very low, around 20 hectolitres per hectare, ensuring concentrated grapes and a perfectly judged ripeness — neither green nor overripe — which underpins the estate's signature of finesse.
Winemaking at La Terrasse d'Elise is guided by a constant pursuit of purity and freshness. All cuvées are made from hand-harvested grapes, handled with as little intervention as possible. Xavier Braujou works with indigenous yeasts, without excessive pigeage or pumping over, favouring a very gentle extraction in order to avoid over-extracted wines. The harvest is handled with the least possible manipulation, out of concern for preserving the fruit and the natural balance of the grape.
The ageing process is lengthy, carried out in tanks or previously used barrels, as the wines never see new oak, ensuring cuvées free from any dominant woody character. The wines are then bottled without filtration and with very little sulphur. Uncompromising, the winemaker does not hesitate to keep a cuvée in the cellar after bottling, until it reveals its full potential. This patient and meticulous approach yields wines that are velvety, silky, and airy — built for ageing while remaining highly drinkable.
Elise: the estate's first cuvée and the cornerstone of the entire venture, it is a pure syrah sourced from the oldest vines. It captivates with its flavours of cooked fruit, spiced and cocoa-tinged notes, and its beautiful finesse on the palate — the hallmark of the house style.
XB: a 100% syrah cuvée, the most accessible at the estate both in terms of flavour and price. Delightfully floral, it opens on violet, wild blackberries, and gentle spices, with a tender, velvety, and expressive structure. A true favourite, perfect as a gift or a treat for yourself.
Le Pradelou: an entry-level cinsault cuvée, more immediately approachable, which opens the estate's range of high-altitude cinsaults. Supple and fruity, it already reveals the characteristic delicacy of the grape variety as worked by Xavier Braujou.
Le Pradel: a standout cuvée and pure cinsault of great renown, exceptionally well crafted, fruity and lightly spiced. It offers a superb character — at once very delicate, silky, and airy — pairing ideally with red meats and white meats such as tenderloin.
Les Hauts de Carol's: another pure high-altitude cinsault, born from the 2013 vintage, which sits at the top of the cinsault range, above the Pradel. One of the estate's most emblematic cuvées, of remarkable complexity and great finesse.
Le Pigeonnier: a 100% carignan cuvée, aged for approximately 12 months in barrels, more refined than structured, defying every stereotype associated with this grape variety. A luminous and fresh interpretation of Languedoc carignan.
L'Enclos: a pure mourvèdre, remarkably fruity and spiced, with an incredibly velvety texture and an airy character. Fresh and perfectly balanced between power and finesse, it showcases the winemaker's mastery of this demanding grape variety.
Le Grenache: a more recent and mysterious cuvée, made from 100% grenache, as soberly indicated by the letter G on the label. A breathtaking and original expression of the grape variety, in the quintessentially refined style so dear to the estate.
Siclène: the estate's latest gem and its only white wine, sourced from vines located on the great terroirs of Aniane. It offers an enveloping texture of smooth white fruits, balanced by a refreshing floral freshness, and enters the select circle of the Languedoc's great white wines.
