Château Doisy-Védrines is a Deuxième Cru Classé de Sauternes (1855 classification), located in Barsac, south of Bordeaux. The largest of the three historic estates derived from the former Doisy cru, it has belonged to the Castéja family since the mid-19th century. Situated on the clay-limestone plateau of Haut-Barsac, it produces one of the richest and most generous Sauternes of the appellation, combining power, unctuousness and freshness.

History of Château Doisy-Védrines

The estate owes its name to the Chevaliers de Védrines, who owned it until the mid-19th century. Originally, Doisy-Védrines, Doisy-Daëne and Doisy-Dubroca formed a single estate, the Doisy domain, mentioned as early as 1832 by André Jullien in his celebrated Topographie de tous les vignobles connus. At the time of the partition, Doisy-Védrines retained the largest share of the land as well as the château. In 1855, the estate was elevated to the rank of Deuxième Grand Cru Classé de Sauternes.

Since the mid-19th century, Château Doisy-Védrines has belonged to the Castéja family, one of the oldest winemaking dynasties in Bordeaux, also owner of prestigious estates such as Château Batailley and Château Trotte Vieille. Olivier Castéja, who has managed the property since 2001 after learning the craft from his father, ensures its continuity. In 2020, his son-in-law Guillaume Lefèbvre took over the management of the estate. The following year, the acquisition of Château Pernaud and its fifteen hectares brought the total vineyard area to fifty-one hectares.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Château Doisy-Védrines

Château Doisy-Védrines rests on the clay-limestone ridge of Haut-Barsac, the highest point of the Barsac plateau, which is home to the finest terroirs of the appellation. The soil combines fine gravels and surface clays over a classic limestone subsoil, an ideal configuration for great sweet wines. This privileged situation, combined with autumnal mists, encourages the development of noble rot on the grapes.

The vineyard now extends over fifty-one hectares, planted at a density of approximately 6,500 vines per hectare. The grape variety composition gives pride of place to sémillon (approximately 80%), the king grape of Sauternes that contributes body and aromas of honey and candied citrus, complemented by sauvignon, which provides freshness, and a touch of muscadelle. Yields are deliberately kept very low, ensuring concentration and quality.

Vinification at Château Doisy-Védrines

True to the tradition of Sauternes, Château Doisy-Védrines practices entirely manual harvesting, through successive tries. The harvesters make six to eight passes through the vines, picking only the grapes perfectly concentrated by noble rot. This meticulous harvest, spread over several weeks, is the essential condition for producing a great sweet wine.

Fermentation and ageing both take place in French oak barrels, with a significant proportion of new casks renewed each year. The ageing period lasts approximately fifteen to eighteen months. The combination of traditional expertise and modern techniques gives the estate's wines the sap and finesse expected of the Crus Classés de Sauternes, as well as a remarkable balance between richness and freshness.

The Cuvées of Château Doisy-Védrines

Château Doisy-Védrines (Sauternes, Deuxième Cru Classé) is the estate's great sweet wine, with a strong dominant of sémillon. Renowned as one of the richest and most generous wines of Barsac, it reveals a golden colour that takes on amber hues with age. Its intense nose blends honey, candied citrus, exotic fruits (pineapple, mango, dried apricot) and notes of wax, vanilla and spices derived from botrytis. The palate is ample and luscious, retaining an essential freshness, and concludes with a long, flavourful finish. Magnificent with foie gras, desserts and blue cheeses, it can also be enjoyed as an aperitif and offers superb ageing potential.

Château Petit Védrines is the estate's second wine, in the same sweet style. More approachable, it charms with its aromas of apricot and peach and its delicately pastry-like finish. Balanced and indulgent, it is a pleasure to drink from its youth, particularly as an aperitif, and pairs readily with seafood.

Since 2023, the estate has also been producing a dry white wine under the Bordeaux appellation. Made from Bordeaux white grape varieties, this lively and aromatic wine completes the range and reflects the renewal driven within the property.
