History of Domaine Jean-Marc Millot

The history of Domaine Jean-Marc Millot has its roots in 1949, when René and Hilda Gilles, Jean-Marc's grandparents, planted their first vines in the Côte de Nuits and began a family Burgundy production. Upon reaching retirement age in 1978, they entrusted the vineyard on a tenant-farming basis to the renowned Mongeard-Mugneret family. Jean-Marc's parents, André and Élisabeth Millot, sought from the time of their marriage in 1965 to reclaim the family vines, but the matter ended up in court, and it was not until 1986 that the Millot family finally regained possession of their vineyard.

In 1995, Jean-Marc Millot inherited the estate and merged Domaine Millot with Domaine Gouroux, the property of his wife Christine's parents. Two years later, in 1997, he formalised the new eight-hectare structure bearing his name and produced his first vintage. From the year 2000, Jean-Marc ceased the use of pesticides and insecticides in his vineyards, initiating a pioneering ecological approach in the region. In 2014, his daughter Alix Millot, following studies in business, joined him at the estate. She gradually took over the management of the property and has been working independently since 2016. Together, father and daughter transitioned to organic viticulture, without official certification, from 2018.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Jean-Marc Millot

The vineyard of Domaine Jean-Marc Millot extends over approximately eight hectares, located exclusively on the Côte de Nuits, with an enclave in Savigny-lès-Beaune on the Côte de Beaune. The most prestigious plots, acquired in the 1980s, include three emblematic Grand Crus: Clos de Vougeot, Échezeaux and Grands Échezeaux. These are complemented by a Premier Cru from Vosne-Romanée (Les Suchots), a village Vosne-Romanée, a Côte de Nuits-Villages (Les Faulques), a Savigny-lès-Beaune and regional cuvées in Bourgogne and Bourgogne Passetoutgrain.

The soils, predominantly clay-limestone and Oligocene in character, provide Pinot Noir with an ideal setting in which to express its full aromatic complexity. Since 2018, the vineyard has been farmed informally according to organic principles, without certification, with limited use of chemical inputs, careful soil cultivation and strict respect for biodiversity. Yields are deliberately controlled, and each plot receives individual attention in order to encourage deep rooting and a faithful expression of the terroir.

Winemaking at Domaine Jean-Marc Millot

In the cellar, Alix Millot has preserved the fundamentals of the estate while bringing her own sensibility to bear. Harvesting is exclusively manual, with rigorous sorting at the winery. The winemaker favours a long cold pre-fermentation maceration, which encourages the extraction of the finest aromas and the suppleness of the tannins. Fermentations take place on indigenous yeasts, without the addition of any inputs, to preserve the typicity of each climat.

Ageing takes place in Burgundian oak barrels, with a carefully measured proportion of new wood adapted to the level of the appellation. Alix stands out for her highly attentive approach: she regularly tastes each barrel individually, adjusts ageing durations without any automatism, and even conducts winemaking trials with whole clusters or without sulphur on certain cuvées (notably the Passetoutgrain and Côte de Nuits). This precision and adaptability bestow upon each wine great purity and a remarkable transparency of terroir. The result is expressed in Pinot Noirs of rare elegance, with infused tannins, near-perfect mastery and superb ageing potential.

The cuvées of Domaine Jean-Marc Millot

Bourgogne Passetoutgrain: A traditional and original blend of Pinot Noir and Gamay, this Bourgogne Passetoutgrain benefits from recent trials in sulphur-free winemaking. The wine seduces with its vibrant fruit, crunchy freshness and excellent drinkability, in a generous and authentic style.

Bourgogne (Pinot Noir): An entry-level regional cuvée, this 100% Pinot Noir Bourgogne perfectly reflects the house style: elegance, purity of fruit and integrated tannins. An excellent value for discovering the style of the estate.

Savigny-lès-Beaune: The estate's sole cuvée from the Côte de Beaune, this village-level Pinot Noir from Savigny wins over with its fruity freshness, silky palate and balance, in the light, airy style typical of the appellation.

Côte de Nuits-Villages Les Faulques: An emblematic single-vineyard cuvée from the Côte de Nuits-Villages appellation. The wine displays a beautiful nose of ripe Pinot Noir, vibrant fruit on the palate dominated by cherry, a tight-knit texture, remarkable balance and a lovely length. A benchmark of the appellation and one of the estate's most beloved cuvées among enthusiasts.

Vosne-Romanée (village): A village-level Pinot Noir from the mythical commune of Vosne-Romanée. Deep colour, a complex nose of noble spices, black fruits and flowers, an ample and silky palate — the aristocratic signature of the Côte de Nuits.

Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots: An emblematic Premier Cru of Vosne-Romanée, a direct neighbour of the greatest Grand Crus of the appellation. The wine stands out for its aromatic depth, its bouquet of red and black fruits, spices and flowers, a dense and refined palate, and remarkable ageing potential.

Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru: The estate's first Grand Cru, this Clos de Vougeot captivates with its ample structure, complex nose of concentrated black fruits, spices and undergrowth, a powerful yet refined palate supported by velvety tannins and a persistent finish.

Échezeaux Grand Cru: An emblematic Grand Cru from Vosne-Romanée, this wine displays a thoroughbred elegance, a complex nose of red and black fruits, spices and violet, a silky and deep palate built for long ageing.

Grands Échezeaux Grand Cru: The jewel of the estate, this Grand Cru neighbouring Clos de Vougeot and Vosne-Romanée embodies the most accomplished expression of Burgundian Pinot Noir. Deep colour, an extraordinarily rich nose blending concentrated black fruits, noble spices, flowers and undergrowth, an ample, deep and velvety palate, and an endless finish. An exceptional cuvée with considerable ageing potential.
