Castello di Ama

Wines from Castello di Ama: buy at the best price

Perched on the hills of Gaiole in Chianti, some twenty kilometres north-east of Siena, Castello di Ama is one of Tuscany's most iconic estates and an absolute benchmark for Chianti Classico. Its vines, planted between 430 and 520 metres above sea level, are among the highest in the appellation and yield sangiovese of remarkable finesse, tension and longevity. A pioneer of the concept of single-vineyard wines in Chianti, the estate has established its parcel vineyards Bellavista, La Casuccia and San Lorenzo as reference points, while L'Apparita stands as one of the greatest Merlots in Italy.

History of Castello di Ama

The hamlet of Ama is steeped in history, settled as early as the Etruscan and Roman eras, and entirely rebuilt in the early 18th century around its villas and church. The modern wine estate was founded in 1976 by the vision of four families determined to restore this historic property to its former glory and to produce single-vineyard wines at a time when Chianti Classico was still viewed as a mass-market product. The gamble was bold: favoring altitude, freshness, and precision over sheer power.

The turning point came in 1982 with the arrival of Marco Pallanti, a young oenologist trained at the University of Bordeaux, who took charge of winemaking. There he met Lorenza Sebasti, daughter of one of the founding families, who became the estate's CEO in 1993. The couple transformed the domaine into a world-class benchmark. Marco Pallanti regrafted over fifty thousand vines, introduced new vine training systems such as the open lyre, and served as president of the Consorzio Chianti Classico between 2006 and 2012, playing an instrumental role in creating the Gran Selezione category at the top of the appellation. Simultaneously, the couple launched the Castello di Ama per l'Arte Contemporanea project, inviting artists such as Michelangelo Pistoletto, Daniel Buren, Louise Bourgeois, Anish Kapoor, and Hiroshi Sugimoto to create site-specific artworks nestled within the vineyards.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Castello di Ama

The property currently spans about 75 hectares of vineyards and 40 hectares of olive groves in the municipality of Gaiole in Chianti, within the additional geographical unit of the same name. Altitude is the cornerstone of the house style: the parcels range between 430 and 520 meters, placing the estate among the highest in Chianti Classico. While this southern sector often yields rich, powerful wines, the cool nights and diurnal temperature shifts preserve vibrant acidity and rare aromatic finesse, ensuring spectacular aging capacity.

The soils, clay-limestone and rich in galestro and alberese, vary noticeably from plot to plot, which prompted the estate early on to isolate its best vineyards. Bellavista, La Casuccia, San Lorenzo, and Montebuoni form the bedrock of this single-vineyard approach, pioneering in Chianti. Sangiovese accounts for the vast majority of plantings, complemented by Merlot, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and a proportion of Malvasia for the Wine Santo. Work is done by hand, yields are kept deliberately low, and the harvest undergoes rigorous sorting. More than sixty people take part in running the estate, which produces around three hundred thousand bottles a year.

Winemaking at Castello di Ama

Each plot is harvested and vinified separately, an essential prerequisite for interpreting the individual crus. The grapes are handled manually, fermented under temperature-controlled conditions with macerations tailored to each terroir and vintage. Extraction remains measured at all times: the goal is clarity and fruit transparency rather than showy concentration, delivering the style of elegance and tension that has become the estate's hallmark.

Aging takes place primarily in French oak barriques and tonneaux, with the proportion of new oak gradually reduced over the years to allow the Sangiovese to express itself unmasked. The crus receive the longest aging periods, followed by patient bottle refinement before release. This consistent rigor, applied equally to entry-level cuvées and top selections alike, accounts for the estate's exemplary consistency, praised vintage after vintage by international critics.

Castello di Ama Cuvées

Ama, Chianti Classico: the estate's entry-level wine, composed of roughly 96% Sangiovese with a touch of Merlot, sourced from the younger vines in the Bellavista, Casuccia, San Lorenzo, and Montebuoni plots. Aged in used barrels, it captivates with its ruby hue, youthful charm, and aromas of cherry, plum, and licorice. A Chianti Classico of a standard that many estates do not achieve with their top bottlings.

Castello di Ama, Chianti Classico Riserva: a selection of the estate's best vats, aged longer in barrels before release. Denser and more structured than the Ama cuvée, it displays ripe black fruits, tobacco, and spices over fine tannins, with the signature high-altitude freshness of the site.

Montebuoni, Chianti Classico Riserva: a single-parcel cuvée from the eponymous vineyard, one of the four historic grand crus of Ama. It stands out with a more austere and mineral profile, featuring black cherry, iron, and dried herbs, supported by an acidic backbone that ensures excellent aging potential.

San Lorenzo, Chianti Classico Gran Selezione: the cuvée that celebrates the entire estate, blending the finest grapes from the historic vineyards of Bellavista, Casuccia, San Lorenzo, and Montebuoni. It owes its name to the San Lorenzo valley seen from the 18th-century villas. Deep and densely woven, it combines black cherry, blackberry, violet, iron, and tobacco, with energetic tannins elevated by lively acidity and a crystalline finish. Regularly ranked among the world's best wines by the specialized press.

Vigneto Bellavista, Chianti Classico Gran Selezione: the estate's most iconic cru, produced only in great vintages and in very limited quantities. Sourced from the highest and best-exposed vineyard, it combines floral and spicy aromatics of immense delicacy with a tannic structure of surgical precision. A wine built for very long aging, widely regarded as one of Chianti Classico's pinnacles.

Vigneto La Casuccia, Chianti Classico Gran Selezione: the other single-vineyard grand cru, richer in clay and sunnier than Bellavista. It produces a fleshier, more enveloping wine showcasing candied black fruits, leather, and sweet spices, while retaining the tension and salinity that define Ama's style. It too is produced solely in vintages that deserve it.

L'Apparita: the estate's legendary Merlot, born from grafting carried out in 1982 onto old Canaiolo and Malvasia Bianca rootstocks, with an initial vintage in 1985. It originates from two clay-rich plots at the top of the Bellavista vineyard, around 490 meters in altitude. Blackcurrant, blackberry, graphite, and spices unfold over a strikingly velvety texture, with a freshness that sets it apart from all other Italian Merlots. One of the most sought-after wines in Tuscany.

Haiku: a Toscana IGT cuvée that blends Sangiovese with the estate's complementary varieties, reflecting the conciseness and balance evoked by its name. Bright red fruit, floral and spicy nuances, silky tannins: an immediately appealing red blessed with genuine depth.

Il Chiuso: a Tuscan Pinot Noir, a distinctive cuvée from a small plot that benefits from Ama's altitude and freshness. Pale hue, a nose of morello cherry, rose, and forest floor, and a fluid, mouth-watering palate with refined tannins. A successful rarity, far removed from conventional Tuscan profiles.

Al Poggio: the estate's white wine, dominated by high-altitude Chardonnay and vinified with partial oak aging. It reveals a nose of white-fleshed fruit, citrus, and flowers, over a broad yet taut palate with a mineral finish. A gastronomic white that is a rarity in Chianti Classico.

Purple Rose: the estate's rosé, crafted primarily from gently pressed Sangiovese. A luminous hue, aromas of strawberry, pomegranate, and citrus zest, with a fresh and saline palate. A serious, gastronomic rosé designed for the dining table rather than a casual aperitif.

Vin Santo del Chianti Classico: the region's traditional sweet specialty, produced from white grapes dried on straw mats for several months and then aged for years in small caratelli barrels. Dried apricot, fig, walnut, caramel, and orange peel compose a dense, luscious wine sustained by vibrant acidity. Produced in minuscule quantities, it is best enjoyed with cantucci or mature cheeses.
