History of Château Trotanoy  

The history of Château Trotanoy dates back to the 18th century, when the Giraud family, royal brokers in Libourne, acquired the estate. At that time, the lands of Trotanoy were known by the unflattering name of "Trop Ennuie" or "Trop Anoi", referring to the difficulty of working this unforgiving soil. The Giraud family, aware of the negative impact of such a name, decided to change it to "Trotanoy". This change marked the beginning of a new era for this vineyard, which would quickly rise to become one of the finest crus of Pomerol in the 19th century.  

However, over the course of various crises and complex successions, the estate's surface area shrank, falling from 25 hectares to just over 7 hectares by the mid-20th century. In 1953, Château Trotanoy was acquired by Jean-Pierre Moueix, an influential figure in the Bordeaux wine world, also owner of the celebrated Château Petrus. Under the stewardship of the Moueix family, the estate regained its former glory, producing wines of exceptional quality and becoming one of the greatest crus of Pomerol.

Today, Château Trotanoy is managed by Christian Moueix, son of Jean-Pierre, with the help of his son Edouard. Technical direction is handled by Éric Murisasco, who benefits from the expert counsel of Jean-Claude Berrouet, the estate's legendary former oenologist.  

Robert Parker awarded 99/100 to the 2016, 1998 and 2018 vintages of Château Trotanoy, and 98/100 to the years 1961, 1964 and 1959, confirming the depth and structure of this great Pomerol wine.

Terroirs and Vines of Château Trotanoy  

The terroir of Château Trotanoy is one of the richest and most complex in the Pomerol appellation. The vineyard extends over 7.2 hectares, divided between clayey gravels and deep black clays resting on a subsoil of iron-rich hardpan. These unique geological characteristics give Trotanoy's wine remarkable power and depth, as well as a dense tannic structure, ideal for ageing.

The vineyard is composed of two distinct soil types: the upper section, rich in gravel, and the more clay-dominant soils on the lower slopes. This mixture of textures contributes to the complexity of the wine, lending it both a great concentration of fruit and a mineral freshness.

The grape variety composition is dominated by Merlot, the king grape of Bordeaux's right bank, which accounts for 88% of the planted area, while Cabernet Franc makes up the remaining 12%. The vines average 35 years of age, with certain plots featuring vines over 60 years old, having escaped the devastating frosts of 1956. These deeply rooted vines, growing in challenging soils, yield low quantities but of exceptional quality.

The vineyard is managed in a traditional manner, with regular soil work (ploughing, thinning, leaf removal) to ensure optimal ripening of the grapes. The harvest is carried out by hand, with a meticulous double sorting to retain only the finest fruit.

Vinifications of Château Trotanoy  

At Château Trotanoy, winemaking is carried out with the utmost respect for tradition, while making use of modern technologies to optimise the quality of the wine. After harvesting, the grapes are sorted manually and optically before being destemmed and placed in temperature-controlled stainless steel and concrete vats for fermentation.  

Extractions are gentle and carefully controlled so as not to over-mark the wine, while preserving the freshness and elegance of the fruit. This approach yields structured wines that are never heavy or overly tannic.  

Once fermentation is complete, the wine is aged for between 12 and 18 months in French oak barrels, of which 50% are new. The ageing process is essential for bringing complexity and a structure suited to very long cellaring to the wine. The oak, used sparingly, never dominates the fruit but subtly envelops the tannins and adds delicate aromas of smoke and spice.

Château Trotanoy  

The flagship wine of the estate, Château Trotanoy, is renowned for its powerful and refined style. With a deep, dark colour, it offers a complex bouquet of black fruits (blackcurrant, blackberry), flowers (violet) and subtle hints of smoke and spice. On the palate, the wine is velvety, with ripe and silky tannins. The citrus freshness brings a pleasant tension, perfectly balancing the richness of the fruit. This wine has exceptional ageing potential and can improve over several decades. Vintages such as 2010, 2016, 2018 and 2019 are particularly remarkable, offering wines of rare decadence and impressive complexity.

L'Espérance de Trotanoy  

L'Espérance de Trotanoy is the second wine of the estate, produced from specific plots or declassified lots that do not make it into the blend of the grand vin. Introduced in 2009, it is not produced every year, only when the quality allows. L'Espérance is a wine that is more approachable in its youth, with a fruity and elegant profile, while retaining the signature of Trotanoy, notably a beautiful tannic structure. This wine represents an excellent alternative for discovering the world of Trotanoy at a more accessible price.
