A feminine touch - Pomerol
Château La Conseillante, an iconic name in Pomerol, shines among the greatest wines of Bordeaux. Located at the heart of this prestigious appellation, the estate has upheld a tradition of excellence for nearly 300 years. Combining innovation, respect for nature and ancestral expertise, La Conseillante produces wines of unparalleled elegance, bearing the subtle nuances of its unique terroir.
The history of Château La Conseillante began in the 18th century under the impetus of Catherine Conseillan, an influential merchant from Libourne. In 1754, she acquired the land that today forms this exceptional estate and gave it her name, thus leaving an indelible legacy. This 12-hectare vineyard has remained unchanged for nearly three centuries, preserving a unique mosaic of plots.
The year 1871 marked a turning point in the history of the estate with its acquisition by the Nicolas family, wine merchants in Libourne. Louis and Nicolas Nicolas, the founders of "Nicolas Frères", breathed new energy into La Conseillante, the management of which has been passed down through five generations. Under the direction of Louis Nicolas from 1880 onwards, technical and commercial innovations came to light. He undertook drainage works on the plots and founded, in 1900, the Syndicat Viticole de Pomerol, contributing to the international renown of the appellation's wines.
Over the decades, the Nicolas family has continued its pursuit of excellence. In the 1970s, Francis and Bernard Nicolas modernized the estate's facilities, while since 2003, Bertrand and Jean-Valmy Nicolas, members of the fifth generation, have been committed to an ever more environmentally respectful approach to viticulture.
Robert Parker awarded 100/100 to the 2020 vintage of Château La Conseillante, with 99/100 for 2019 and 98/100 for 2016, 2018, and 1947, highlighting the finesse and quality of this exceptional Pomerol.
The singularity of Château La Conseillante lies in its exceptional terroir, situated on the border between Pomerol and Saint-Émilion. The vineyard, covering 12 hectares, is planted on a diversity of soils that impart a unique palette of flavors to its wines. To the northeast, one finds clay soils, particularly favorable to Merlot, while the southwest is composed of sandy-clay gravels, offering ideal ground for Cabernet Franc.
This vineyard is composed of 16 distinct plots, some of which date back to 1958, and features a great variety of soils, including grey, red, and blue clays, with deposits of iron, gravel, and sand. This geological richness allows for a unique expression of the grape varieties cultivated, primarily Merlot (80%) and Cabernet Franc (20%), with a small, recently planted plot of Cabernet Sauvignon. The average age of the vines is 35 years, a crucial factor in obtaining concentrated grapes of exceptional quality.
For several years, Château La Conseillante has been implementing sustainable and responsible agricultural practices. The estate is certified ISO 14001 and HVE 3, two standards that underscore its commitment to environmentally respectful management. Biodynamic techniques and biocontrol are favored, as is the use of plants such as clover and oats to improve biodiversity and soil quality.
Château La Conseillante is at the forefront of innovation in the domaine de winemaking. Since the construction of the circular vat room in 2012, equipped with 22 concrete tanks adapted to plot-by-plot vinification, each plot of the vineyard is vinified separately, making it possible to capture and express the diversity of the terroirs.
The grapes, harvested by hand and carefully sorted, undergo a rigorous selection process before being vinified. Malolactic fermentation takes place in tanks, and each plot is vinified with great precision to ensure the optimal expression of the terroir. The wines are then aged in French oak barrels, of which 70% to 80% are new, for approximately 18 months. This ageing method contributes to the complexity and structure of the wines, while endowing them with an exceptional ageing potential.
The modernization of equipment, combined with a nature-respectful approach, enables La Conseillante to produce wines of great finesse, marked by a subtle elegance and distinctive aromas of violet, red fruits, and spices.
Château La Conseillante
The grand fine wine of the estate, Château La Conseillante, is renowned for its finesse and elegance. Composed predominantly of Merlot, with a touch of Cabernet Franc, it is distinguished by aromas of violet, peony, and red fruits, accompanied by spicy nuances. On the palate, it offers a silky texture, supple tannins, and a beautiful freshness. After several years of ageing, this wine develops aromas of black truffle, characteristic of the great Merlots of Pomerol. Thanks to its perfect balance between power and delicacy, La Conseillante is an emblematic wine of the Pomerol appellation, with an exceptional ageing potential, often exceeding 20 years.
Duo de Conseillante
Since 2007, Château La Conseillante has also produced a second wine, Duo de Conseillante, drawn from two sandier plots. This wine is less concentrated than its elder, but retains all the delicacy and freshness that are characteristic of La Conseillante. It is distinguished by its fruity aromas and silky texture, with an ageing potential of two to ten years. Duo de Conseillante is an excellent introduction to the refined world of La Conseillante, offering an accessible experience while upholding the estate's high standards.
