Frequently Asked Questions

Domaine Dugat-Py is one of the absolute benchmarks of the Côte de Nuits. Founded by Bernard Dugat and his wife Jocelyne Py, the estate stands out for the great age of its vines — some over 80 years old — cultivated with extreme care using reasoned farming practices. Yields are deliberately very low, and each plot is vinified separately to express its terroir with precision. This artisanal philosophy, combined with prestigious appellations such as Gevrey-Chambertin, Charmes-Chambertin, and Mazis-Chambertin, explains why demand for Domaine Dugat-Py wines far exceeds their production.

Bernard Dugat-Py favours a traditional approach to winemaking in Burgundy. The grapes are harvested by hand at perfect ripeness, with rigorous selective sorting. Fermentation takes place in vats with a proportion of whole clusters, which promotes aromatic complexity. Ageing is carried out in high-quality oak barrels for a period of 18 to 22 months depending on the cuvée. The result is a red Burgundy with a deep colour, silky tannins, and a rich aromatic palette blending ripe dark fruits, spices, and elegant woody nuances.

To preserve the full quality of a wine from Domaine Dugat-Py, a few essential storage rules must be observed. Bottles should be stored horizontally, at a stable temperature between 12 and 14°C, away from light, vibrations and odours. A humidity level of around 70% is ideal to prevent the cork from drying out. If you do not have a natural cellar, a quality electric wine cabinet is an excellent alternative. When properly stored, these wines evolve harmoniously and reveal, with time, a remarkable complexity and depth.

Domaine Dugat-Py is based primarily in Gevrey-Chambertin, and this is where the heart of its range can be found. Among its most iconic cuvées are Grand Crus such as Charmes-Chambertin, Mazis-Chambertin, and Chambertin, as well as several Premiers Crus and village wines from distinct named plots. Each appellation reflects a precise interpretation of the Burgundian terroir, with a shared signature: deep, full-bodied wines of great longevity.

The wines of Domaine Dugat-Py are renowned for their exceptional aging capacity. The Grands Crus such as Chambertin or Mazis-Chambertin can easily be cellared for 20 to 30 years under good storage conditions. The Premiers Crus reach their peak between 10 and 15 years after the harvest, while the village wines and Bourgogne rouge are approachable earlier, generally after 5 to 8 years. For recent vintages, decanting for one to two hours before serving is advised in order to open up the aromas and soften the still-youthful tannins.

Domaine Dugat-Py produces wines at several levels of the Burgundian hierarchy, and the differences are significant. The Gevrey-Chambertin village comes from plots located on the plain or at the foot of the slope; it is more approachable, fruity and supple, ideal for medium-term drinking. The Premiers Crus, sourced from identified named plots on the hillside slopes, offer greater structure and complexity. The Grands Crus — Charmes-Chambertin, Mazis-Chambertin, Chambertin — come from the finest classified plots, with exceptional soils, exposures and microclimates. These are the most concentrated, most profound and most long-lived expressions of the art of Domaine Dugat-Py.

History of Domaine Dugat-Py

The history of Domaine Dugat-Py is that of a lineage of winegrowers rooted in Gevrey-Chambertin for more than four centuries. It all began in 1645 with Hugues Bollenot, the son of a winegrower from the Gevrey terroir. In 1923, the marriage of Fernand Dugat and Jeanne Bolnot marked the creation of Domaine Dugat, enriched by prestigious plots such as Charmes-Chambertin. In 1972, Pierre and Michèle Dugat, Bernard's parents, were crowned with the Tasse d'Or by Alexis Lichine for their 1972 Charmes-Chambertin, cementing the estate's reputation.

Bernard Dugat, the twelfth generation, began his first winemaking in 1975 and married Jocelyne Py in 1979. In 1994, he renamed the estate Dugat-Py, incorporating his wife's maiden name. Their son Loïc joined the venture in 1996, bringing a modern vision while honoring traditions. From 1999, the estate began experimenting with organic farming on certain plots, before a full conversion in 2003. Loïc, now at the helm of the estate since 2015, has refined the style of the wines, prioritizing finesse and terroir expression. Today, Domaine Dugat-Py is a world reference, synonymous with age-worthy wines of incomparable intensity and elegance.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Dugat-Py

Domaine Dugat-Py spans 15 hectares, principally in the Côte de Nuits, with forays into the Côte de Beaune. Its vines, with an average age of 65 years, are a genetic treasure, the result of a rigorous massal selection initiated by Jeanne Bolnot, a renowned nurserywoman. Certain plots, such as those of the Cœur de Roy cuvée, exceed 100 years of age, lending the grapes unparalleled concentration and complexity.

The estate's terroirs include six Grands Crus, among them Chambertin, Mazis-Chambertin, Charmes-Chambertin, Mazoyères-Chambertin, and Corton-Charlemagne, as well as twelve Premiers Crus, such as Lavaux St-Jacques and Petite Chapelle. The soils, often plowed by horse since 2006, are lovingly tended according to certified organic practices since 2015. Loïc Dugat-Py employs biodynamic techniques, such as following the lunar calendar and using homemade preparations, to bring out the best in each plot. This approach, combined with low yields (averaging 20 hl/ha), guarantees grapes of exceptional quality, faithfully reflecting their terroirs.

Winemaking at Domaine Dugat-Py

The winemaking philosophy of Domaine Dugat-Py rests on an absolute respect for the fruit and the terroir. In the centuries-old cellars of the Aumônerie, built in the 11th century, the wines are aged for 18 to 24 months beneath Gothic and Byzantine vaults. Loïc favors minimal intervention, allowing the wine to express itself naturally. Fermentations rely on indigenous yeasts and a variable proportion of whole-cluster grapes, adapted to each vintage and plot, to soften the tannins and enrich the aromas.

Extraction is gentle, with one pump-over and one punch-down per day, without cold maceration. The use of new oak, reduced under Loïc's direction, is carefully dosed, with François Frères barrels selected for their finesse. The wines, unfiltered and unfined, are bottled according to their gustative evolution, preserving their purity and aging potential. This meticulous process yields deeply colored, powerful wines of refined elegance, reminiscent of the great Burgundies of old.
