Wines from Domaine Trapet: buy at the best price

Founded in 1919, the Trapet estate, whose celebrated neighbours include the Rousseau estate and the Dugat estate, spans nearly 16 hectares, of which approximately 1.2 hectares are reserved for white Burgundy wines. The vines, planted on limestone and clay-limestone soils, have been farmed biodynamically since 1995. Three Grands Crus are produced by the Domaine Jean Louis Trapet: Chambertin, Chapelle Chambertin and Latricières Chambertin.

History of Domaine Trapet

The history of Domaine Trapet Père et Fils begins at the end of the 19th century, when Louis Trapet, originally from Chambolle-Musigny, settled in Gevrey-Chambertin. His son, Arthur, laid the foundations of the estate by acquiring prestigious parcels as early as the 1870s, including the Gevrey-Chambertin parcel "en Dérée" in 1859 and the Premier Cru Petite Chapelle in 1877. In 1919, the purchase of a Chambertin Grand Cru parcel marked a decisive turning point, anchoring the estate among the elite of Burgundy.

Over the generations, the Trapet family has managed to innovate while preserving its roots. In the 1990s, Jean-Louis Trapet, trained in Dijon and enriched by international experience, took the reins of the estate. He initiated a bold transition to biodynamics, becoming one of the pioneers of this practice in Burgundy. In 1993, a family split gave rise to two distinct entities: Domaine Trapet Père et Fils and Domaine Rossignol-Trapet. Under the direction of Jean-Louis, accompanied by his wife Andrée and their sons Pierre and Louis, the estate reached new heights, producing wines recognized for their purity and elegance. Today, Domaine Trapet Père et Fils is an essential reference for enthusiasts wishing to purchase exceptional Burgundy wines.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Trapet

Spanning 18.5 hectares, Domaine Trapet Père et Fils benefits from an exceptional viticultural heritage, primarily in Gevrey-Chambertin and Marsannay, with a recent extension in the Côte de Beaune (2.1 hectares). The 13.5 hectares of pinot noir and 1.5 hectares of chardonnay have been cultivated biodynamically since 1997, certified Biodyvin and Demeter. This choice reflects the estate's commitment to respecting nature and expressing the singularity of each terroir.

The jewels of the estate are its three Grand Crus: Chambertin (1.9 ha), Latricières-Chambertin (0.75 ha), and Chapelle-Chambertin (0.6 ha). Chambertin, with its marly-calcareous and clay soils, produces wines of rare complexity and balance. Latricières-Chambertin, on poor and siliceous soil, yields subtle and powerful cuvées, while Chapelle-Chambertin, on a warm and well-drained terroir, gives fine and expressive wines. The Premier Crus, such as Clos Prieur, Petite Chapelle, and En Ergot, rival their illustrious neighbors in finesse. The parcels of Marsannay and Bourgogne rouge and blanc complete this portfolio, offering accessible wines always marked by the Trapet signature. Each parcel is carefully tended, from bud to harvest, to reveal the unique potential of its terroir.

Winemaking at Domaine Trapet Père et Fils

Winemaking at Domaine Trapet Père et Fils is an art that combines tradition and precision. The grapes, harvested by hand and rigorously sorted, are vinified with absolute respect for the fruit and the terroir. Jean-Louis Trapet favors natural fermentations using indigenous yeasts, promoting an authentic expression of the grapes. Depending on the cuvées and vintages, the use of whole clusters varies (50–100% for Grand Crus, 30–50% for Premier Crus), bringing structure and complexity.

The estate practices pigeage at the start of fermentation to delicately extract the tannins, followed by gentler pump-overs to preserve elegance. Aging, carried out in French oak barrels (20–50% new wood depending on the cuvée), is tailored to each wine to refine the tannins while respecting the freshness and tension of the fruit. This approach, combined with the absence of sulfur for certain cuvées such as A Minima, guarantees wines of remarkable purity. Every step, from the vat room to bottling, is guided by gentleness and gravity, ensuring irreproachable quality for enthusiasts wishing to purchase top-flight Burgundy wines.
