Denis Bachelet

An estate with an international reputation in Gevrey-Chambertin: Denis Bachelet

Wines from Domaine Denis Bachelet: buy at the best price

The Domaine Denis Bachelet, of modest size (less than 4 hectares of vineyard), is located in the commune of Gevrey-Chambertin in Burgundy. For about forty years, Denis Bachelet has presided over the destiny of the estate, whose international reputation is very well established. In fact, due to its low production — always in high demand for export — Domaine Denis Bachelet is one of the star estates of Gevrey-Chambertin, with an immense international reputation; much like the Dugat-Py estate, the majority of Domaine Denis Bachelet's vineyard is made up of very old vines, sometimes a century old, which allow the wines to deliver that extra dimension of soul that can sometimes be lacking in certain estates.

History of Domaine Denis Bachelet

The story of the estate is above all the story of one man. Born in 1963 in Belgium, Denis Bachelet spent his school holidays in Gevrey-Chambertin, at his grandparents' home — they were winegrowers. His grandfather had tended the family vines until his retirement in 1973, after which the vineyard went several years without proper care, as Denis's father had chosen a different path. At barely eighteen years old, the young man took over the reins of this slumbering heritage of less than two hectares and, from his very first vintages, produced Burgundy wines that astonished by their balance.

Recognition came quickly. Introduced to the leading wine writers by exporter Becky Wasserman, Denis Bachelet saw his bottles find their way into the cellars of British, American and Asian collectors. Patiently, he doubled the size of the estate, acquiring plots in premier cru and grand cru, then the lieu-dit Les Evocelles in 2011. The modest winery installed by his grandfather in a former village post office remains the beating heart of the property, now joined by his son Nicolas. The estate has thus established itself as an absolute reference in the Côte de Nuits, without ever seeking to grow.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Denis Bachelet

The vineyard covers approximately 4.3 hectares spread across the commune of Gevrey-Chambertin and its immediate surroundings. The terroir is typically Burgundian: clay-limestone, stony, fed by the scree of the Combe de Lavaux and the red marls of the foothills. The village wines come from 1.43 hectares scattered across the lieux-dits En Dérée, Sylvie, Les Jeunes Rois, La Burie and La Justice, on either side of the main road, from vines planted between 1932 and 1937.

Higher up on the hillside, the premier cru plot of Les Corbeaux (0.42 hectare) adjoins Mazis-Chambertin, while the 0.43 hectare of Charmes-Chambertin is situated in the best-exposed part of the appellation, between Gevrey and Morey-Saint-Denis. These two jewels rest on centenary vines planted between 1907 and 1917, which account for the natural concentration of the juice. Even the regional appellations benefit from old vines, a guarantee of unusual density at this level. Soil work is carried out using reasoned cultivation, with ploughing, severe pruning and manually harvested grapes that are rigorously sorted — a standard of excellence found among the finest producers of Burgundy grands crus.

Winemaking at Domaine Denis Bachelet

The winemaking follows a clear philosophy: add nothing, force nothing. The grapes are fully destemmed then lightly crushed, before a cold pre-fermentation maceration and fermentation with indigenous yeasts, carried out in open vats. Extractions remain gentle, achieved through measured punch-downs and light pump-overs, in order to preserve the fruit and draw fine rather than powerful tannins. Finesse above all: the estate's motto can be read in every glass.

Ageing then takes place over fifteen to eighteen months in French oak barrels, with a measured proportion of new wood — around 25% for village appellations and 35% for the Burgundy premier crus and the grand cru. The barrels come from trusted coopers, with Allier oak reserved for the Charmes-Chambertin and Vosges oak for the other cuvées. Bottling is done by hand, without filtration, to preserve the full integrity of the wine. The wines can be enjoyed young for their fruit, but reveal their true dimension after seven to ten years in the cellar.

The Cuvées of Domaine Denis Bachelet

Bourgogne Aligoté: sourced from a 19-are plot planted in 1987, this rare white offers a nose of white flowers, lemon and flint. The palate is straight, saline, driven by a vibrant acidity that makes it an ideal aperitif and a companion for seafood.

Bourgogne Rouge: produced from 61 ares of Pinot Noir planted in 1977, it possesses a density that many village appellations would envy. Crunchy cherry, raspberry and a light spiced touch make up its profile, on a fresh and inviting palate. An excellent entry point into the world of the estate, to be savoured within five to eight years.

Côte de Nuits-Villages: this cuvée comes from just over one hectare, the majority of whose vines date from 1952, complemented by a small centenary plot from the lieu-dit Créole in Brochon. The wine is fleshy, marked by black fruits, blackberry and a hint of liquorice, with tight tannins that soften beautifully after a few years. A quality-to-price ratio that has become hard to match among the red wines of the Côte.

Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes: the estate's true calling card, born from vines planted in the 1930s across five lieux-dits on the hillside foothills. The nose, majestic, blends raspberry, black cherry, violet and undergrowth. The palate combines density and silkiness, with an unexpected length for a village-level wine. Six to ten years of cellaring benefits it fully.

Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles Vieilles Vignes: acquired in 2011, this hillside lieu-dit situated at altitude on poor soils is only vinified separately in vintages that allow it. It stands out for its freshness, its aromas of black berries, incense and spices, and a taut mineral structure. A slender Gevrey, more vertical than fleshy, promised a fine evolution.

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Corbeaux Vieilles Vignes: sourced from vines planted between 1907 and 1917, this premier cru neighbouring Mazis-Chambertin combines elegance and tension. The nose, creamy, evokes raspberry, sandalwood and soft spices. The palate, structured and muscular in its youth, opens up after several years in the cellar to reveal an aristocratic finesse. One of the finest expressions of the Les Corbeaux climat.

Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Vieilles Vignes: the jewel of the cellar, produced from 43 ares of more than century-old vines, in the finest part of the climat. Only a few barrels leave this treasure each year. Candied black fruits, liquorice, cocoa, soft and floral spices compose a bouquet of striking complexity, while the palate unfolds enormous concentration without ever losing its freshness, through to an interminable finish. A very great fine wine for ageing, to seek out among the Chambertin and its grands crus, capable of spanning twenty to thirty years without faltering.
