History of Domaine Denis Bachelet

The estate’s story begins with one man. Born in Belgium in 1963, Denis Bachelet spent his school vacations in Gevrey-Chambertin with his winegrower grandparents. His grandfather tended the family vines until his retirement in 1973, after which the vineyard went several years without proper care, as Denis’s father had chosen a different path. Barely eighteen, Denis took charge of this dormant inheritance of less than two hectares and, from his first vintages, made Burgundy wines that surprised with their balance.

Recognition came quickly. Introduced to leading wine writers by exporter Becky Wasserman, Denis Bachelet saw his bottles find their way into the cellars of British, American and Asian collectors. He patiently doubled the estate’s area, acquired premier cru and grand cru plots, and then the Les Evocelles lieu-dit in 2011. The modest winery his grandfather established in a former village post office remains the heart of the property, where his son Nicolas now works alongside him. The estate has thus become a benchmark of the Côte de Nuits, without ever seeking to grow for growth’s sake.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Denis Bachelet

The vineyard covers around 4.3 hectares in Gevrey-Chambertin and its immediate surroundings. The terroir is typically Burgundian: stony clay-limestone soils enriched by scree from the Combe de Lavaux and red marl from the foothills. The village wines come from 1.43 hectares spread across the En Dérée, Sylvie, Les Jeunes Rois, La Burie and La Justice lieux-dits, on either side of the main road, with vines planted between 1932 and 1937.

Higher up the slope, the Les Corbeaux premier cru plot (0.42 hectares) borders Mazis-Chambertin, while the 0.43 hectares of Charmes-Chambertin occupy the best-exposed part of the appellation, between Gevrey and Morey-Saint-Denis. Both gems grow on century-old vines planted between 1907 and 1917, accounting for the natural concentration of the wines. Even the regional appellation wines benefit from old vines, bringing unusual density at this level. The vineyards are managed using sustainable practices, with plowing, severe pruning and carefully sorted hand-harvested grapes—standards shared by the finest producers of Burgundy grands crus.

Winemaking at Domaine Denis Bachelet

Winemaking follows a clear philosophy: add nothing, force nothing. The grapes are fully destemmed and then lightly crushed before a cold pre-fermentation maceration and fermentation with native yeasts in open vats. Extraction remains gentle, with measured punch-downs and light pump-overs to preserve the fruit and draw out fine rather than powerful tannins. Finesse above all: the estate’s guiding principle is evident in every glass.

The wines are then aged for fifteen to eighteen months in French oak barrels, with a measured proportion of new oak: around 25% for the village appellations and 35% for the Burgundy premiers crus and the grand cru. The barrels come from long-standing cooperage partners, with Allier oak reserved for Charmes-Chambertin and Vosges oak for the other cuvées. Bottling is done by hand, without filtration, to preserve the wine’s full substance. The wines can be appealing in their youth for their fruit, but reveal their true depth after seven to ten years in the cellar.

The cuvées of Domaine Denis Bachelet

Bourgogne Aligoté: from a 19-are plot planted in 1987, this rare white offers aromas of white flowers, lemon and flint. The palate is focused and saline, lifted by vibrant acidity that makes it an ideal aperitif and a fine match for seafood.

Bourgogne Rouge: produced from 61 ares of Pinot Noir planted in 1977, it has a density many village appellation wines would envy. Crisp cherry, raspberry and a light touch of spice define its profile, with a fresh, inviting palate. An excellent introduction to the estate’s wines, to enjoy within five to eight years.

Côte de Nuits-Villages: this cuvée comes from just over one hectare, most of its vines dating from 1952, supplemented by a small plot of century-old vines in the Créole lieu-dit in Brochon. The wine is fleshy, with black fruit, bramble and a hint of licorice, and firm tannins that soften beautifully after a few years. Its pleasure-to-price ratio has become hard to match among the Côte’s red wines.

Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes: a true calling card for the estate, this wine comes from vines planted in the 1930s across five lieux-dits in the foothills. Its majestic nose blends raspberry, black cherry, violet and forest floor. The palate combines density with silkiness and offers unexpected length for a village wine. It benefits greatly from six to ten years of aging.

Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles Vieilles Vignes: acquired in 2011, this high-altitude hillside lieu-dit, with its poor soils, is vinified separately only in vintages that allow it. The wine stands out for its freshness, aromas of dark berries, incense and spice, and taut mineral structure. A graceful Gevrey, more linear than fleshy, with a promising future.

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Corbeaux Vieilles Vignes: made from vines planted between 1907 and 1917, this premier cru bordering Mazis-Chambertin combines elegance with tension. Its creamy nose evokes raspberry, sandalwood and sweet spice. Structured and muscular in its youth, the palate opens up after several years in the cellar to reveal aristocratic finesse. One of the finest expressions of the Les Corbeaux climat.

Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Vieilles Vignes: the jewel of the cellar, produced from 43 ares of vines more than a century old in the finest part of the climat. Only a few barrels of this treasure are made each year. Candied black fruit, licorice, cocoa, sweet spices and floral notes form a strikingly complex bouquet, while the palate delivers immense concentration without ever losing its freshness, through to an exceptionally long finish. A very fine wine for cellaring, worth seeking out among the Chambertin grands crus, capable of aging for twenty to thirty years without fading.
