History of Domaine Confuron-Cotetidot

The history of Domaine Confuron-Cotetidot is deeply rooted in the Burgundian terroir since the 17th century. The Confuron family, pioneers in massal selection, developed a unique expertise over generations, going so far as to create their own Pinot Noir clone, the "Pinot Confuron", a testament to their exceptional viticultural mastery.

In 1964, Jack Confuron marked a new milestone in the family's history by establishing the estate as we know it today. Since then, his sons Jean-Pierre and Yves Confuron, both oenologists, have taken over the running of the estate. Their expertise extends beyond the estate's boundaries: Jean-Pierre, also a professor of oenology, advises the prestigious Château de la Tour and Maison Chanson, while Yves brings his expertise to the Domaine de Courcel in Pommard.

The continued presence of the parents, Jacky and Bernadette, in the vineyards symbolizes the intergenerational transmission of knowledge that makes this exceptional estate so strong.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Confuron-Cotetidot

The estate distinguishes itself through its unique approach to viticulture in Burgundy. The 11 hectares of vines, with an average age of 65 years, have never been exposed to herbicides or synthetic pesticides — a rarity in the region. This cultural philosophy favors traditional plowing and a management close to organic farming, without seeking certification.

The plots, spread across the most prestigious terroirs of the Côte de Nuits, benefit from meticulous soil work, complemented by short pruning and green harvesting in spring. This rigor helps maintain naturally low yields, between 35 and 45 hectoliters per hectare, ensuring optimal concentration of the grapes.

The vines, mostly sourced from historic massal selections, express with precision the nuances of each terroir, from the limestone soils of Gevrey-Chambertin to the more clay-rich lands of Nuits-Saint-Georges.

Vinifications of Domaine Confuron-Cotetidot

The estate's winemaking philosophy stands out for its traditional and uncompromising character. Harvests, systematically later than those of their neighbors, aim to achieve optimal ripeness of both grapes and stems. A unique feature: the estate has no destemmer, leading to 100% whole-cluster fermentation.

The vinifications are characterized by long macerations of 2 to 3 weeks, followed by extended aging in oak barrels for up to two years. The use of new wood is perfectly controlled, ranging from 10–20% for village wines up to 50% for the grands crus. The wines are bottled without filtration or fining, thus preserving their full authenticity.

This traditional approach produces baroque wines, marked by high ripeness and a singular texture. While these wines may present a certain austerity in their youth, they develop a remarkable aromatic complexity over time, fully revealing their potential after 10 to 15 years of cellaring.
