The Fourrier estate is based in Gevrey Chambertin, in Burgundy, and has nearly 9 ha of vineyards mostly concentrated in the AOC Gevrey-Chambertin (with a few additional plots very nearby, in Morey Saint Denis, Chambolle Musigny and Vougeot). Jean-Marie Fourrier took over the domaine de his father in 1994, when he was under 25 years old. He was by no means a novice, however, as after spending a few years in Oregon, with the celebrated Henri Jayer and at Domaine Drouhin, Jean-Marie Fourrier was able to draw on his experience to consolidate the reputation of the Fourrier estate and significantly raise the level of its production.

History of Domaine Fourrier

The story begins in the 1930s with Fernand Pernot, who built up the vineyard and acquired with remarkable foresight plots in the finest climats of Gevrey-Chambertin. The estate then took the name Pernot-Fourrier when his nephew Jean-Claude Fourrier joined the operation, before taking full control in 1969. At that time, the domaine was one of the very first in Burgundy to export its wines to the United States, though it went through a slight qualitative dip during the 1980s.

The turning point came in 1994, when Jean-Marie Fourrier, the fourth generation, took over the domaine at just twenty-three years of age. Trained under the legendary Henri Jayer, then at Domaine Drouhin in Oregon, he applied a clear vision: to reveal the terroir with the greatest possible purity, through precise viticulture and minimal intervention in the cellar. He established a radical rule: never to bottle at the domaine the fruit of vines less than thirty years old, with those wines being sold to négociants. In 2007, the construction of a new winery finally made it possible to vinify all ten hectares on site. In 2011, Jean-Marie Fourrier simultaneously launched a small négociant operation under his own name, enabling him to work leased plots in prestigious climats, including several grand crus.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Fourrier

The vineyard extends across four villages in the Côte de Nuits and brings together a mosaic of seventy plots spread from the bottom to the top of the slope. The heart remains Gevrey-Chambertin, with fragments of some of the most renowned climats in Burgundy: Clos Saint-Jacques, Combe aux Moines, Champeaux, Les Goulots, Les Cherbaudes and Griotte-Chambertin. The clay-limestone soils vary greatly, from outcroppings of bare limestone at the top, stony scree in the middle of the slope, and more clay-rich soils at the bottom.

The true signature of the domaine lies in the age of its vines. Most were planted between the 1920s and 1950s, and the average age is between fifty and seventy years, with certain plots exceeding a century: the vines of Clos Saint-Jacques date back to between 1902 and 1910, and those of Griotte-Chambertin to 1928, making them the oldest in the cru. Jean-Marie Fourrier sums up his conviction in a single phrase: until a vine has developed its root system, it does not develop flavour. The management of the vineyard is rigorous, with precise pruning, considered leaf removal and soil work, but without green harvesting, balance being sought upstream.

Winemaking at Domaine Fourrier

The winemaking aims for maximum transparency. Harvesting is done by hand, followed by strict sorting. Destemming is partial depending on the vintage and the climat, and the harvest is never crushed or handled roughly. Fermentations start with indigenous yeasts alone, following a logic of very delicate extraction, without seeking power or color, in order to preserve the fragrance and silky texture that are the hallmarks of the estate.

The ageing then lasts sixteen to twenty months on the lees, with very little racking in order to limit handling and oxidation. New oak is deliberately kept to around twenty percent, even for the greatest crus, with most barrels being used ones so as never to mask the expression of the climat. Jean-Marie Fourrier has also experimented with ageing in amphora on certain cuvées. Sulphur levels are kept to a strict minimum and bottling is carried out with the greatest care, delivering wines of a balance, elegance and complexity that are today considered a reference.

The Cuvées of Domaine Fourrier

Gevrey-Chambertin Vieille Vigne: a blend of around fifteen plots of old vines planted between the 1920s and 1950s, with an average age approaching eighty years. It brings together the rocky limestone of Champerrier, the clay of Jouise and the suppleness of Seuvrées near the Morey border, offering a complete snapshot of the village. Red and black fruits mingled with blood orange and quince, a fluid and refined texture, beautiful acidity and satisfying length.

Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Echezeaux Vieille Vigne: a village lieu-dit located at the far north of the appellation, on the border with Brochon, a sector that yields wines with a more assertive tannic structure. Unusual complexity for a village wine, ripe black cherry fruit, silky texture and an underlying mineral drive, with enough structure to evolve well in the bottle.

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cherbaudes: a premier cru situated just below Chambertin, on deep clay-limestone soils. It combines flesh, density and a fine tannic backbone, with notes of black cherry, blackberry and soft spices. One of the most complete and consistent premier crus in the range.

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Goulots: a small, little-known climat nestled in the Combe de Lavaux, with a north-east exposure that preserves remarkable freshness. The wine plays on finesse and verticality, with tart red fruits, a floral touch and a sharp minerality. A rare and highly sought-after wine.

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Champeaux: situated at the top of the slope on a thin and very stony soil, this climat yields a firm, energetic and deeply mineral wine. The tannins are fine but present, the dark fruit underpinned by a marked salinity. A premier cru built for long ageing.

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Combe aux Moines: one of the great classics of the domaine, rich yet always restrained. The bouquet blends lively morello cherries, wild strawberry and orange zest; the palate is fleshy and spiced, lifted by white pepper, sage and oregano that animate the finish. Depth and salinity make it a sure value.

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques: often described as a hidden grand cru, this legendary climat belongs to only five owners. Fourrier holds just under ninety ares planted at the very beginning of the 20th century. The wine displays an explosive and floral aromatic profile, almost ethereal, with brilliant red fruits, an abundance of spices and a mineral backbone of striking purity. One of the most sought-after cuvées in all of Burgundy.

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques Cuvée Centenaire: an exceptional cuvée produced only in outstanding vintages, from the oldest vines in the plot, all of which are over a hundred years old. It offers even greater concentration, depth and length, in a register of absolute elegance. A collector's bottle produced in just a few hundred examples.

Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru Vieille Vigne: the domaine's sole owned grand cru, from vines planted in 1928, among the oldest in this small climat. The wine marries an aromatic profile of morello cherry and macerated red fruits, floral notes and a texture of rare refinement. The long, saline finish reveals the full class of this minuscule terroir. Tiny production and worldwide demand make this a bottle that is very difficult to find.

Morey-Saint-Denis Clos Solon Vieille Vigne: a village lieu-dit worked with the same exacting standards as the premier crus. It charms with a surprising finesse for an appellation that is often more rustic, offering crunchy red fruits, a hint of undergrowth and silky tannins. Charming and remarkably easy to drink.

Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Clos Sorbès: a premier cru situated on the heights of the village, on well-drained, stony soils. It gains in structure and depth compared to the Clos Solon, with denser dark fruit, spices and a firm mineral backbone that calls for a few years in the cellar.

Chambolle-Musigny Vieille Vigne: the most floral and most delicate expression in the range, true to the village's reputation. Rose, violet and wild strawberry dominate, the texture is silky and the tannins are of remarkable finesse, with an airy and perfumed finish.

Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Gruenchers: a small climat neighbouring Les Amoureuses, it adds depth and additional minerality to the typical Chambolle finesse. Raspberry, cherry, violet and chalky tannins compose an ensemble of great delicacy, animated by a vibrant acidity.

Vougeot 1er Cru Les Petits Vougeots: a rare premier cru located outside the Clos de Vougeot, on clay-limestone soils. The wine combines flesh, ripe red fruit and a saline mineral backbone, in a supple and approachable style that can be enjoyed relatively early while also supporting ten years of ageing.
