Touraine wines: buy at the best price

Nicknamed the Garden of France, Touraine lies at the heart of the Loire Valley, between Blois and Saumur. Its vineyards include some of the region’s best-known appellations: Vouvray, Montlouis-sur-Loire, Chinon, Bourgueil, Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil, Cheverny, and the regional Touraine AOC with its named designations. Two grape varieties define its character. Chenin Blanc produces dry, off-dry, sweet, and sparkling whites with impressive longevity. Cabernet Franc yields fresh, fruity reds, from easy-drinking wines to cuvées built for aging. Sauvignon Blanc, Gamay, Côt, and Romorantin round out the range. Touraine wines are distinguished by their liveliness, aromatic finesse, and minerality derived from tuffeau limestone.

Where is the Touraine wine region?

The Touraine wine region extends mainly across Indre-et-Loire and Loir-et-Cher, with sections reaching into Sarthe and Indre. It follows both banks of the Loire and runs up the valleys of its tributaries: the Vienne for Chinon, the Indre for Azay-le-Rideau, the Cher for Chenonceaux and the Loir Valley for Jasnières. East of Tours, Vouvray on the right bank faces Montlouis-sur-Loire on the left. West of the city, Bourgueil and Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil occupy the right bank, while Chinon stretches along the Vienne. Toward Blois, Cheverny and Cour-Cheverny mark the eastern limit. Touraine borders Anjou-Saumur to the west and faces the Central Loire to the east.

History of the Touraine wine region

Gregory of Tours attested to grape growing in Touraine as early as the sixth century, and the abbeys played a decisive role in its development. In the twelfth century, the Plantagenets made the fortress of Chinon one of their major centers. Rabelais, born near Chinon, celebrated the wines of his homeland, as Ronsard and Balzac did after him. For a long time, Vouvray wines were regarded as the region’s finest whites, to the point that Montlouis wines were sold under the Vouvray name. Touraine was among the first regions to receive AOC recognition. Vouvray obtained its designation in 1936, followed by Chinon, Bourgueil and Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil in 1937. Montlouis followed in 1938, and the Touraine AOC was recognized on December 24, 1939. Cheverny and Cour-Cheverny completed the group in 1993. Since then, a new generation of winegrowers has steered the region toward organic viticulture and terroir-driven wines.

What are Touraine’s terroirs?

Touraine’s terroirs rest on tuffeau, a soft Turonian limestone that emerges on the slopes and into which countless cave cellars have been dug. Winegrowers distinguish several types of soil. Aubuis, a clay-limestone soil, produces structured wines built to age. Perruches, flinty clay soils, lend tension and smoky notes. The sands and gravels of the alluvial terraces produce supple reds that mature early. The climate marks a transition between oceanic and continental influences: mild enough to ripen Cabernet Franc, but vulnerable to spring frost. Emblematic sites include Clos du Bourg and Haut-Lieu in Vouvray, as well as the slopes of Cravant-les-Coteaux and Clos de l'Écho in Chinon.

Which grape varieties are permitted in Touraine?

Chenin Blanc, known locally as pineau de la Loire, is the only grape variety used in Vouvray, Montlouis-sur-Loire and Jasnières. It offers aromas of quince, acacia, honey and citrus. Cabernet Franc dominates the reds of Chinon, Bourgueil and Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil, with notes of raspberry, violet and bell pepper. Sauvignon Blanc is the main grape of white Touraine AOC wines and is also used in Cheverny blends. For reds, Gamay, Côt and Pinot Noir round out the grape varieties. Rarer varieties include Romorantin, the sole grape of Cour-Cheverny, and peppery pineau d’Aunis, grown in the Loir Valley.

What are the different styles of Touraine wine?

Touraine produces wines of every color and style. Among the whites, Vouvray and Montlouis express Chenin Blanc in styles ranging from dry to sweet, depending on the vintage, and also produce fine traditional-method sparkling wines. Sauvignon Blanc-based Touraine whites emphasize freshness. Cabernet Franc reds range from easy-drinking wines grown on sand to hillside wines aged in barrels or large oak casks and capable of aging for many years. Rosé and vin gris wines round out the range. For food pairings, a dry Vouvray goes with rillettes from Tours or fish in beurre blanc sauce. Chinon pairs with game or Sainte-Maure-de-Touraine cheese, while a sweet Vouvray complements tarte Tatin or foie gras.

What are the best Touraine vintages?

The great Touraine vintages of the past thirty years are 1996, 1997, 2002, 2005, 2009, 2010, 2015, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2022, not to mention 1989 and 1990, a legendary pair for sweet wines. Warm years such as 2005, 2009, 2015, 2018 and 2022 yielded ripe reds and rich Chenin Blancs well suited to sweet wines. The 2010 and 2014 vintages produced wines with more tension. The heatwave year of 2003 remains an outlier. By contrast, 2013, 2016, 2021 and 2024, affected by frost, rain or downy mildew, produced lighter wines to drink young. The 2023 vintage was uneven. Today, the reds from 2017 to 2020 are drinking well, while the great Chenin Blancs and sweet wines of 2018, 2020 and 2022 are worth waiting for.

What are the best estates in Touraine?

Domaine Huet, founded in Vouvray in 1928, is Touraine’s most famous estate. Its three properties—Haut-Lieu, Le Mont and Clos du Bourg—have been farmed biodynamically since 1990. Its sweet wines made from the first selection of grapes age for decades.

A neighbor of Huet’s and related to the family by marriage, the Foreau family’s Clos Naudin is Vouvray’s other benchmark. Its reserve sweet wines and sparkling bruts are particularly sought after.

In Chinon, Domaine de Philippe Alliet, based in Cravant-les-Coteaux, makes powerful reds with great aging potential, including Coteau de Noiré and L'Huisserie. The more elegant Domaine Bernard Baudry is renowned for La Croix Boissée, one of the Loire’s greatest Cabernet Francs. Domaine Charles Joguet rounds out this leading trio with Clos de la Dioterie and Les Varennes du Grand Clos.

In Montlouis-sur-Loire, François Chidaine has brought the appellation to prominence with biodynamic Chenin Blancs such as Les Bournais and Clos du Breuil. Jacky Blot, at Domaine de la Taille aux Loups, makes finely crafted dry whites there, including the Rémus cuvée.

Couly-Dutheil owns Clos de l'Écho in Chinon, one of the Loire’s most renowned vineyards. Less widely known, Domaine Yannick Amirault is a benchmark in Bourgueil and Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil for fine, profound Cabernet Francs such as Le Grand Clos.

How long can you keep a Touraine wine?

A Touraine wine may keep for two years in the case of a Sauvignon Blanc or more than half a century for a great sweet Vouvray. White Touraine wines, rosés and Gamay reds are best drunk within two to three years. A Chinon or Bourgueil from sandy soils is best enjoyed after three to six years, while wines from clay-limestone slopes can last fifteen to twenty-five years. Dry Vouvray and Montlouis wines keep for ten to twenty years. Off-dry and sweet wines, sustained by Chenin Blanc’s acidity, can age for several decades. Store your bottles on their sides at around 12 °C and 70% humidity. Decanting a young, age-worthy Cabernet Franc for one to two hours softens it, and a great dry Chenin Blanc also benefits from aeration.
