Domaine du Bel Air

Wines from Domaine du Bel Air: buy at the best price

The Domaine du Bel Air is located in Benais, just next to Bourgueil, in the heart of its appellation terroir, in the Loire Valley. Pierre Gauthier succeeded his father in 1979, and following his meeting with Denis Duveau (winemaker) and Philippe Noyé, who sold wine to restaurateurs, he decided from 1995 onwards to gradually abandon conventional viticulture and convert his entire vineyard (20 ha) to organic farming (Ecocert certified) by the year 2000, with full soil cultivation.

History of Domaine du Bel Air

The story begins in 1880, when an ancestor of the Gauthier family leaves his trade as a potter to work the land. He buys a few small plots at the foot of the village of Benais, grows carrots, beets, hemp, and licorice there, then acquires parcels suited to vines, made affordable by the recent devastation of phylloxera. He plants vines he grafted himself and produces his first Bourgueil wines. The property takes a decisive turn in the 1970s, when the family decides to focus on winegrowing: Laurent Gauthier still works his vineyards with a horse and passes these traditional practices on to his son Pierre.

Long enjoyed within the family, the wines were not sold commercially until 1979. A fifth-generation winegrower, Pierre Gauthier produced his first vintage under his own name in 1995 and adopted particularly attentive vineyard practices, cultivating the soils throughout and eliminating all herbicides before converting the entire estate to organic farming, certified by Ecocert in 2000. His son Rodolphe joined him in 2005, with Sophie’s support. Together, they extended the aging periods and began releasing their top cuvées only after several years of maturation. The acquisition of Clos Nouveau, a historic walled terroir, in 2007 brought the range its pinnacle wine.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine du Bel Air

The vineyard covers around twenty hectares spread across numerous parcels in the communes of Benais and Restigné, all planted with Cabernet Franc. Benais is known as Bourgueil’s most clay-limestone-rich area, capable of producing wines with body and depth that can take time to open up but age beautifully. The estate farms an impressive diversity of soils there: terrace gravel, mid-slope clay, clay-silica soils, mixtures of sand and micaceous chalk, and above all the limestone tuffeau of the upper plateau, sometimes covered by a thin layer of clay.

The vines average around thirty years of age, with some parcels over seventy years old. They are planted at a density of 5,000 vines per hectare and trained using the Guyot system. The soils are worked year-round, with grass cover favored between the rows. Bud thinning and green harvesting keep yields low, generally below 40 hectoliters per hectare. The harvest is entirely by hand, with sorting in the vineyard followed by a second sorting on a table at the winery.

Winemaking at Domaine du Bel Air

At the winery, the grapes are completely destemmed, then sorted again before going into the tanks. Following a cold pre-fermentation maceration that preserves the fruit and sets the color, fermentation begins naturally with indigenous yeasts alone. Maceration is gentle and long—twenty to thirty days on average for cuvées destined for aging—with regular pump-overs and punch-downs. The easy-drinking cuvée, by contrast, spends only about eight days in temperature-controlled tanks to preserve its vibrant fruit.

The wines are then transferred to barrels or 600-liter demi-muids, with the proportion of new oak varying by cuvée and vintage. For aging, the Gauthier family uses old caves carved into limestone, which provide ideal natural humidity and temperatures. The wines rest there for twelve to twenty-four months in a stable, sheltered environment. The top cuvées are released only after several years. All wines are bottled unfiltered.

The Cuvées of Domaine du Bel Air

Jour de Soif (red Bourgueil): the estate’s cuvée for immediate enjoyment, sourced 60% from terrace gravel and 40% from mid-slope clay, both south-facing, with vines around twenty years old planted at 5,000 vines per hectare. A short maceration of about eight days at controlled temperatures is followed by aging on fine lees in tanks and bottling the following spring. Light purple in color, it offers red fruit and floral notes on the nose. The palate is light, without harsh tannins, and has a saline finish that invites another glass. Serve chilled with summer meals or simply among friends.

Les Vingt Lieux Dits (red Bourgueil): a blend of numerous small, south-facing parcels on clay-silica soils, planted with vines around forty years old. After gentle maceration, the wine is aged for twelve months in barrels previously used for two or three vintages in tuffeau cellars, then bottled unfiltered. Deep, intense ruby in color, it opens with pronounced black fruit and subtle earthy notes. The palate is full, direct, and concentrated, without heaviness or green notes. Its savory, lingering finish makes this a captivating Bourgueil: decant it while young or cellar it for four to six years.

Les Marsaules (red Bourgueil): a mid-slope named site with a mix of sand and micaceous chalk, planted with vines averaging sixty years old. Fermented in open tanks with punch-downs, then aged for an extended period in barrels previously used for two or three vintages before being bottled unfiltered. The nose features crushed black berries and wild strawberries, accented by earthy and smoky nuances. The palate is rich with flavorful fruit, firm and balanced, with a thread of freshness and spice through the finish. A characterful, delicious wine to open in advance or cellar for four to six years.

Grand Mont (red Bourgueil): one of the appellation’s most renowned named sites, with south-facing clay-limestone parcels at the top of the plateau, planted with vines averaging seventy years old. Aged for twenty-four months in barrels previously used for two or three vintages in caves carved into the limestone. Deep, intense red in color, it combines blackberry and blueberry aromas with sweet spices and cedar. The palate is fresh and elegant, with pure, approachable fruit and striking length. A wine that approaches the finest Loire reds in its ability to combine concentration and freshness, it can be cellared for eight to ten years.

Clos Nouveau (red Bourgueil): the estate’s landmark wine, from one of Bourgueil’s last truly walled vineyards, right in the heart of the village of Benais, sheltered from the wind behind a monumental gate. Acquired by the Gauthiers and restored over several years, it yielded its first vintage in 2007. The very shallow soil consists of limestone tuffeau covered by a thin layer of clay, lending the wine a unique earthy power. Aged for twenty-four months in barrels previously used for two or three vintages, then bottled unfiltered. The nose offers ripe black berries, white pepper, and stony notes; the palate brings vivid, juicy fruit, a stunning balance of concentration and mineral freshness, firm yet elegant tannins, and remarkable length. A bottle to wait at least two years before opening and to cellar with confidence for ten to twelve years.
