The Bel Air estate is located in Benais, right next to Bourgueil, in the heart of its appellation terroir, in the Loire Valley. Pierre Gauthier succeeded his father in 1979, and following his encounter with Denis Duveau (a winegrower) and Philippe Noyé, who sold wine to restaurateurs, he decided from 1995 onwards to progressively abandon conventional viticulture and convert his entire vineyard (20 ha) to organic farming (Ecocert certified) from the year 2000, with full soil cultivation.

The TOP winemakers of Loire

Joined by his son Rodolphe since 2005, Domaine du Bel Air has made its mark on the Bourgueil terroir with a heritage of old Cabernet Franc vines situated on the finest terroirs of Bourgueil, thanks to which Domaine du Bel Air produces wines of great intensity combining concentration, finesse and elegance. Pierre Gauthier took advantage of this organic conversion to showcase his various terroirs through a range of wines that is currently very complete. With the acquisition in 2005 of a parcel named "Clos Nouveau", and after restoring the walls and working the soils, the decision proved worthwhile as early as the 2007 vintage, when a true renaissance of this "Clos Nouveau" could be witnessed. This cuvée thus added a very fine wine to the Domaine du Bel Air range. A highly coherent range made up of 5 Bourgueil cuvées: Jour de soif, Les Vingt Lieux-dits, Les Marsaules, Grands Monts and Clos Nouveau. It is worth noting that the vintages of the last three cuvées mentioned do not leave the estate before 4 to 5 years of ageing, as Domaine du Bel Air has the good fortune of possessing an ageing cellar in old caves carved out of tuffeau. The last 3 cuvées are aged for 24 months in barrels or demi-muids, the proportion of new wood varying according to the cuvées and vintages. The Bel Air Jour de Soif cuvée is aged in tank and bottled early in the spring following the harvest, and as its name suggests, it is a simpler, easy-drinking wine to be enjoyed for its fruit and youthfulness. The Bel Air Les Vingt Lieux Dits cuvée is aged in 2- or 3-wine barrels for 12 months, and offers a full, frank and concentrated palate, built on a pure, intense and delicate fruit (to be kept for 4 to 5 years). The Bel Air Les Marsaules cuvée is more complex (24 months of ageing) and is distinguished by fine earthy and smoky notes. The Bel Air Grands Monts cuvée leans towards blackberry, blueberry, gentle spices and cedar, with a fresh, elegant, pure and digestible palate and a striking length. Finally, the Bel Air Clos Nouveau cuvée is even more ambitious, as it is a magnificent wine with an ageing potential of 10 to 15 years. The entire range of wines from Domaine du Bel Air is to be recommended among the excellent wines of the Loire.
