Wine 1958

The 1958 vintage in Bordeaux is a minor vintage and, for the majority of wines, cellaring will not have improved their quality. They are nonetheless a good gift idea in the context of a birth year vintage. The wines of Pessac Léognan were the most successful, and Haut Brion 1958 and La Mission Haut Brion 1958 may still give satisfaction if well stored, as can Château Latour from the Pauillac appellation. The white Bordeaux, being weaker, are today less sought after. The Sauternes, on the other hand, with their pleasant and light constitution, can be interesting to drink as a birth year bottle. In Burgundy, the 1958 vintage is weak and plentiful: grey rot having affected a large portion of the vineyards. White Burgundy wines as well as red Burgundies are minor wines less suited for aging. The 1958 vintage also failed to produce the greatest Champagne of the decade… The wines of the Rhône Valley are in the same vein as those of Burgundy. In the Loire, certain sweet wines from Vouvray may be ready to drink, and the vin jaune from Jura of 1958 can genuinely bring pleasure to lovers of the oxidative style (walnut) as they are only produced in years that truly merit it.
