The 1958 vintage in Bordeaux is a small vintage and for the majority of wines, aging did not improve their quality. However, they make an excellent gift idea for a vintage anniversary. The wines from Pessac Léognan were the most successful, and Haut Brion 1958 and La Mission Haut Brion 1958 can still provide satisfaction if well preserved, as can Château Latour from the Pauillac appellation. White Bordeaux wines, being weaker, are less sought after today. Sauternes, on the other hand, with their pleasant and light constitution, can be interesting to drink as a birth year bottle. In Burgundy, the 1958 vintage is weak and plethoric: gray rot affected a large part of the vineyard. White Burgundy wines as well as red Burgundies are smaller wines less equipped for aging. The 1958 vintage also did not produce the greatest Champagnes of the decade… Rhône Valley wines are similar to those from Burgundy. In the Loire, certain sweet wines from Vouvray can be enjoyed, and the yellow wines from Jura 1958 can truly provide pleasure to lovers of oxidative style (walnut) as they are only produced in years that deserve it.
As the year 1958 is not particularly renowned in the most reputed regions, red wines from Graves in Bordeaux, a Sauternes or a Vin Jaune from Jura (whose aging capacity is infinite) can still provide pleasure and emotion to lovers of wines of this style (oxidative). An amusing gift to offer for a 60th birthday, for example.
