Wine 1958

The 1958 vintage in Bordeaux is a small vintage and for the majority of wines, ageing will not have improved their quality. They are however a good gift idea for an anniversary vintage. The wines from Pessac Léognan were the most successful and Haut Brion 1958 and La Mission Haut Brion 1958 can still give satisfaction if well preserved, as can Château Latour from the Pauillac appellation. White Bordeaux being weaker, they are less sought after today. Sauternes, on the other hand, with their pleasant and light constitution can be interesting to drink as a birth year bottle. In Burgundy, 1958 is a weak and plentiful year: grey rot having affected a large part of the vineyard. White Burgundy wines as well as red Burgundies are modest wines less suited for ageing. The 1958 vintage did not produce the greatest Champagne of the decade either… Rhône Valley wines mirror those of Burgundy. In the Loire, some sweet wines from Vouvray may be worth drinking, and the 1958 Jura yellow wines can genuinely bring pleasure to lovers of the oxidative style (walnut) as they are only produced in years that deserve it.
