The Moulin à Vent Cru, one of the ten crus of Beaujolais, possesses a captivating history dating back several centuries. In the heart of the Middle Ages, this region witnessed a significant expansion of viticulture, marked by the cultivation of the Gamay grape variety. The Moulin à Vent appellation derives its name from the eponymous windmill located at the top of the hill, symbolizing the strength and power of the wines that emanate from it. Officially recognized as a cru in 1936 with the awarding of the controlled designation of origin (AOC), Moulin à Vent has since acquired a distinguished reputation for the quality and aging potential of its wines.
Moulin à Vent extends over approximately 650 hectares of southeast-exposed hills, benefiting from optimal sunlight. The soils are mainly composed of decomposed granite, imparting a robust structure and mineral complexity to the wines. The vines, predominantly planted with the Gamay grape, thrive on these hillsides, where the influence of the wind and the nature of the soil contribute to the unique expression of the grapes.
Vignerons in Moulin à Vent are deeply attached to their terroir, implementing environmentally friendly cultivation practices and, at times, adopting biodynamic approaches to preserve the vitality of the soil.
