History of Moulin à Vent

The Cru of Moulin à Vent, one of the ten crus of Beaujolais, has a captivating history dating back several centuries. At the heart of the Middle Ages, this region saw a significant expansion of viticulture, marked by the cultivation of the Gamay grape variety. The Moulin à Vent appellation takes its name from the eponymous windmill located at the top of the hill, symbolizing the strength and power of the wines that emanate from it. Officially recognized as a cru in 1936 with the attribution of the Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC), Moulin à Vent has since acquired a distinguished reputation for the quality and aging capacity of its wines.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Moulin à Vent

Moulin à Vent extends over approximately 650 hectares of southeast-facing hills, benefiting from optimal sunlight. The soils consist primarily of decomposed granite, giving the wines a robust structure and mineral complexity. The vines, planted predominantly with the Gamay grape variety, thrive on these hillsides, where the influence of the wind and the nature of the soil contribute to the unique expression of the grapes.

The winemakers of Moulin à Vent are deeply attached to their terroir, implementing environmentally respectful cultivation practices and sometimes adopting biodynamic approaches to preserve the vitality of the soil.
