History of Solaia

The story of Solaia is inseparable from that of the Antinori family, a Florentine dynasty devoted to wine since 1385 and now in its twenty-sixth generation. In the 1960s and 1970s, Marchese Piero Antinori and his visionary oenologist Giacomo Tachis played a pivotal role in the Super Tuscan revolution — those great age-worthy wines freed from appellation rules and inspired by the great Bordeaux. Following the resounding success of Tignanello, born in 1971, they created Solaia in 1978.

The wine was first crafted solely from Bordeaux grape varieties, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, with no indigenous varieties, on a particularly sun-drenched parcel of the Tignanello vineyard, whose name means "the sunny place." Sangiovese was subsequently introduced into the blend. Solaia quickly established itself as a rival to the greatest wines in the world, the ultimate recognition coming when the 1997 vintage was named Wine of the Year by Wine Spectator. Today, the house is led by Albiera Antinori, surrounded by her sisters Allegra and Alessia.

Terroirs and Vines of Solaia

Solaia comes from a vineyard of approximately ten hectares located within the Tenuta Tignanello, in the Chianti Classico zone, between the Pesa and Greve valleys, south of Florence. Facing south-west, the vines thrive at an altitude of three hundred and fifty to four hundred metres, on stony soils rich in limestone, typical of the great terroirs of the Tuscan interior, where galestro and albarese alternate.

This generous exposure and these well-drained soils, swept by hilltop breezes, ensure ideal ripening of Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese, endowing the wine with its structure, freshness, and minerality. The Tenuta Tignanello long served as a laboratory for the Antinori family in their experimentation with international grape varieties and modern techniques, making this terroir the birthplace of two of the most influential wines in the history of Italian viticulture, Solaia and Tignanello.

Vinification of Solaia

The vinification of Solaia combines Bordeaux rigour with Tuscan expression. The grapes, harvested at perfect ripeness and carefully sorted, are vinified separately by variety and by parcel. Fermentation takes place in tanks with precise temperature control, in order to gently extract colour, aromas, and tannins.

The wine is then aged for approximately eighteen months in French oak barriques, a significant proportion of which are new, bringing complexity and structure while preserving the purity of the fruit. An additional bottle aging period precedes release. True to its exacting standards, the house produces Solaia only in years deemed worthy of its name, dedicating the most careful attention to delivering a wine of great power, remarkable elegance, and a longevity spanning several decades.

The cuvées of Solaia

Solaia: the Fine Wine and the icon, a blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Sangiovese and a touch of Cabernet Franc. Classified as Toscana IGT, it displays a complex and very pure nose of blackcurrant, blackberry, black fruits, spices, liquorice, and cedar notes, with a full, structured palate, delicate tannins, and a long, clean finish. Produced only in exceptional vintages, it is the purest expression of the Bordeaux approach on a great Tuscan terroir, built for very long aging.

Tignanello: a sibling wine and companion to Solaia, born in 1971, the first Tuscan red to break free from the rules of Chianti by incorporating the Cabernets and eliminating white grape varieties. A Sangiovese-dominant blend complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, aged in barriques, it seduces with its concentrated nose of red fruits, spices, and liquorice, and its elegant palate with fine tannins and a long finish.

Marchese Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva: sourced from the Tenuta Tignanello, this Sangiovese-based Chianti Classico Riserva pays tribute to the house's historic expertise, combining Tuscan typicity, elegance, and excellent aging potential.

Tenuta Tignanello Chianti Classico: the estate's cuvée celebrating the Chianti Classico terroir, a more accessible and fruit-forward expression of the property's Sangiovese, ideal for discovering the spirit of Tenuta Tignanello.
