René-Jean Dard and François Ribo are two winegrowers who founded their estate Dard et Ribo in Mercurol, north of Valence, in 1984. They met while studying at the viticulture school in Beaune in Bourgogne and then began testing their talents on a small plot of just one modest hectare of vines belonging to Jean-François Dard. The adventure seems to have captivated them, and the Dard et Ribo estate today comprises 9 hectares of vines, with plots under AOC Saint Joseph, Crozes Hermitage and Hermitage.

The TOP winemakers of Rhône

Jean-René Dard is more focused on customers and welcoming them, while the discreet François Ribo prefers to be among the vines. The Dard et Ribo estate is farmed using biodynamic methods, and wine production remains consistently homogeneous, with considerable work on single-parcel cuvées based on the principle that each cuvée must be connected to its terroir. The vines are located across three prestigious appellations: Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage and Hermitage. On granite in the heartland of Saint-Joseph between Mauves and Tournon, as well as in Saint-Jean de Muzols; a few acres of Hermitage and superb terroirs in Crozes-Hermitage on the hillsides of Larnage and Crozes-Hermitage, which stand apart from the Chassis plain through the presence of granite and kaolin (white clay). At the Dard & Ribo estate, the methods have remained the same for 35 years — non-interventionist: approximately 10% of the grapes are foot-trodden (to obtain the juice needed to start fermentation), no additives, slow settling of the juice, hence no filtration, no sulphur. The estate owns an old press, acquired from Prieuré Roch in 1992, and still uses it today. The philosophy of Dard et Ribo is to seek out fruit brightness, finesse, subtlety, and light, caressing textures. The wines are therefore centred on fruit and freshness and are highly appealing in their youth. The Rhône whites from the Dard et Ribo estate (made from Roussanne) display beautiful balance, preserving freshness and a certain liveliness. We are far here from the very rich, sometimes warm and heavy style that can be found in certain wines of the Rhône, much to the delight of connoisseurs and those seeking an alternative to the cuvées generally produced in the Northern Rhône region.
