Domaine Dard et Ribo wines: buy at the best price

René-Jean Dard and François Ribo are two winemakers who founded their estate, Dard et Ribo, in Mercurol, north of Valence, in 1984. They met while studying at the winegrowing school in Beaune, Burgundy, and began honing their skills on a single, modest hectare of vines belonging to Jean-François Dard. They seem to have embraced the venture: Domaine Dard et Ribo now comprises 9 hectares of vines, with plots in the Saint Joseph, Crozes Hermitage, and Hermitage AOCs.

The History of Domaine Dard et Ribo

Born in two towns facing each other across the Rhône—Tournon in Ardèche and Tain-l'Hermitage in Drôme—René-Jean Dard and François Ribo met as teenagers at the viticultural school in Beaune, Burgundy. Their friendship soon grew into a shared vision of winemaking. René-Jean Dard’s father grew a few vines for his own consumption. When his father died, René-Jean decided to take over the family plots and farm them without chemicals.

The estate was officially founded in 1984 on a quiet street in Tain-l'Hermitage, with barely one hectare inherited from the Dard family. Every other plot was patiently leased or purchased, one by one over the decades, bringing the estate to today’s nine hectares spread across seven communes. Deeply influenced by the work of Jules Chauvet and Jacques Néauport, pioneers of winemaking without sulfur, the two winemakers belong to the Rhône’s first generation of producers working without sulfur, following in the footsteps of Marcel Lapierre in Beaujolais. Their winery, housed in a large agricultural building in the hamlet of Blanche-Laine in Mercurol, is home to a 1955 press purchased from Prieuré-Roch in 1992. While many of their contemporaries changed their style to appeal to international critics, Dard and Ribo have not wavered in 40 years, and their wines have become a benchmark for lovers of living wines.

The Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Dard et Ribo

The vineyard is a true mosaic of small plots, each chosen for its character. In Saint-Joseph, the vines cling to the granite soils of the Ardèche bank, between Mauves, Tournon and Saint-Jean-de-Muzols. In Crozes-Hermitage, most production comes from the hillsides of Larnage and Crozes, with soils of red clay, rounded pebbles, decomposed granite and, above all, kaolin—the white clay that makes this area distinctive. Mercurol has clay, sand and gravel. Finally, the estate has a few small plots in Hermitage, in La Varogne and La Croix.

René-Jean Dard likes to sum up the estate’s geography this way: Saint-Joseph, on the Ardèche bank, embodies the finesse of Syrah, while Crozes-Hermitage and Hermitage, vineyards in Drôme, express its power. Syrah dominates the reds, Marsanne and Roussanne the whites. Some plots were planted in the 1920s, 1940s or 1950s, with vines up to 130 years old in Hermitage. Farming is rigorously organic, without herbicides and in keeping with biodynamic principles. The approach always centers on individual plots: one soil, one grape variety, one cuvée. Harvesting is by hand, with strict sorting.

Winemaking at Domaine Dard et Ribo

Their methods have not changed in 40 years and can be summed up in one word: nonintervention. Red grapes are fermented as whole clusters—in proportions ranging from two-thirds to all of the fruit, depending on the cuvée—in open vats or large wooden casks. About 10% of the harvest is foot-trodden. Fermentation begins solely with indigenous yeasts, with nothing added, and extraction is limited to a few pump-overs and punch-downs during macerations lasting two to three weeks.

The wines age in 600-liter demi-muids and Burgundy barrels, almost exclusively used oak, for ten to fifteen months depending on the wine and vintage. The whites are pressed directly, then transferred to barrels without the use of new oak. There is no fining or filtration: extended natural settling of the juice replaces mechanical intervention. Bottling takes place at the estate, with no added sulfites or only minute amounts, between spring and fall depending on the cuvée. The result is wines with astonishing purity of fruit, immediately appealing in their youth yet often underestimated for their aging potential.

The Cuvées of Domaine Dard et Ribo

Crozes-Hermitage Rouge: an introduction to the estate and its most emblematic cuvée, blended from four or five sites, notably Les Pins on decomposed granite soils, Chavanessieux on gray granite, Pé du Loup and Les Bâties in Larnage on red kaolin. Whole-cluster fermentation, followed by 11 to 15 months of aging in 600-liter barrels. Juicy fruit, black pepper and licorice, with the easy-drinking character that is the winery’s hallmark.

Crozes-Hermitage C'est le Printemps: the estate’s spring cuvée, made entirely from Syrah grown on old vines planted in 1970 and 1996. Whole-cluster maceration in open vats with just a few punch-downs, followed by a short period of aging in tank and bottling in March—just in time for spring. Freshness, lightness, an awakening of the senses and pure fruit: a must-have for warmer days.

Crozes-Hermitage Les Bâties Rouge: sometimes labeled Les Rouges des Bâties, this single-parcel cuvée comes from 2.5 southeast-facing hectares in Larnage, on red clay and rounded pebbles, with vines planted in 1923, 1947, 1948 and 1987. Fermented with 67% to 100% whole clusters, it spends two to three weeks in vat and ten months in used 600-liter barrels. Strawberry and smoke on the nose; a vivid, intense raspberry palate, velvety tannins and excellent aging potential.

Crozes-Hermitage Les Pins: grown on decomposed granite soils, this Syrah from vines planted in the late 1990s has a more airy, floral profile, with fresh red fruit and a silky texture.

Crozes-Hermitage Pé du Loup: a limited-production selection blending Syrah from vines planted in 1989 and the 1950s, at elevations of 220 to 250 meters on granitic gravel over kaolin in the windy northern sector of Larnage. Whole-cluster fermentation, followed by 12 months in used 600-liter barrels.

Crozes-Hermitage Pitrou: one of the estate’s almost legendary cuvées, produced in tiny quantities and reserved for its most devoted enthusiasts.

Nomiyasui: Japanese for “easy to drink,” a perfect description of this Syrah. Ripe dark fruit, olive and violet, with a supple structure and irresistible appeal—a cuvée that always wins everyone over at the table.

Crozes-Hermitage Blanc: sourced from the Les Bâties parcel, this blend of approximately 90% Marsanne and 10% Roussanne comes from 30-year-old vines on a gently sloping, southwest-facing clay site. Direct pressing, followed by aging in demi-muids or barrels with no new oak; no filtration and bottled without added sulfur. Aromas of white peach, mirabelle plum and white flowers lead to a generous, saline palate with remarkable balance.

Crozes-Hermitage Les Karrières Blanc: the prestige white cuvée, grown on the same stony red clay and granite soils as Les Rocoules in Hermitage. A blend of Roussanne and Marsanne planted in 1986, aged in barrels and demi-muids. Its complex, evolving nose offers ripe fruit, stewed pear, elderflower, honey and vanilla, with a dense, deep palate.

Saint-Joseph Rouge: from the granite soils of the Ardèche bank, with sand and clay, it expresses what the winemakers themselves call the finesse of Syrah. Smoky dark berries accented by violet and black olive, with a tautness and precision that set it apart from the Crozes-Hermitage wines.

Saint-Joseph Les Champs: a rare, highly sought-after single-parcel cuvée from the appellation. Denser and deeper than the classic Saint-Joseph, it needs a little patience to reveal its full complexity.

Saint-Joseph Blanc: Marsanne and Roussanne grown on granite produce a white wine with surprising aromas of tropical fruit and candied citrus. The palate is balanced and generous, finishing with a touch of acidity and appealing bitter notes.

Hermitage Rouge: the estate’s pinnacle cuvée, from a few small plots in La Varogne and La Croix, with vines up to 130 years old. Where many produce dense, structured Hermitage wines, Dard and Ribo offer a savory, vibrant wine that effortlessly layers spiced fruit, finely textured tannins and mouthwatering acidity.
