AOC Patrimonio, Antoine Arena: the reputation of a Corsican estate through the mastery of its terroir
The Antoine Arena estate has become an icon among Corsican wines in less than 30 years. Located on a small limestone enclave renowned for its beauty and its great Corsican wines, in Patrimonio, Antoine Arena is a lover of his terroir and an authentic character who has always worked as a family. An adventure shared with his wife Marie Arena and his two sons, Jean Baptiste Arena and Antoine Marie Arena.
Jean-Baptiste brought biodynamic practices to the Arena estate, and Antoine-Marie is more dedicated to winemaking. It was in 2014 that Antoine Arena divided his estate, giving 1/3 to each son who started production under their own names, while keeping a historic parcel of the Arena estate: Morta Maio. Although there had been wine production in the Arena family for several generations, it was Antoine Arena who truly developed the Arena estate, growing from 3 hectares in 1980 to expand and reach almost 14 hectares containing the best terroirs of Corsica, including the famous parcels that make the reputation of Antoine Arena wines: Grotte Di sole and Carco. These two parcels (3 hectares each) are the embodiment of Antoine Arena's determination, planted with Vermentino and Niellucio, native Corsican grape varieties. The Carco parcel was born from the audacity of this visionary. His love for the soil also extends to its preservation. Through viticulture without chemical products, regular plowing and natural inputs (manure, marc), Antoine Arena restores his lands' vigor. He has also planted one hectare of Bianco Gentile (outside AOC, as table wine), a forgotten Corsican grape variety that he aims to revive. In the cellar, his philosophy is the same—Antoine Arena minimizes interventions: the wines are neither yeasted, nor fined, nor acidified.
Antoine Arena's wines are characterized by balance and elegance, with no heaviness thanks to perfect mastery of maturity. Arena's Bianco Gentile is fruity, pleasant to drink, all in lightness. The white Carco from Domaine Antoine Arena stands out with a beautiful minerality and a very straight finish, while Arena's white Grotte di Sole is denser, with a richer, more indulgent texture. Among the red wines, there is notably Morta Maio, a blend of young vines with well-mastered tannins that produced a breathtaking 2006! Arena's red Carco is all about suppleness, with equally present tannins that are silky and complex, with a hint of minerality from the limestone soil—a superb harmony! Arena's Grotte Di Sole is as powerful in white as in red, with more advanced maturities, density, roundness, richness, and amplitude in the mouth. Antoine Arena also offers us a Muscat du Cap Corse (fortified wine), a wine with great aromatic power, balanced by remarkable freshness. The critics are very positive and the wines are well rated by the guides, notably Robert Parker and the RVF with two stars. After a first harvest in 2014, Antoine-Marie Arena took advantage of the superb 2015 vintage to vinify two new cuvées: "Bianchi" and "Memoria," a Corsican white wine and a Corsican red wine blended (grape varieties and vintages), which represent the Arena signature: Finesse, Elegance and Freshness!
