Clos Canarelli is located in Figari in southern Corsica, and the true story of the Canarelli estate begins in 1993, when Yves Canarelli decided to buy back the family vines and become a winegrower. Subsequently, he developed his vineyard, which currently exceeds 32 ha, of which 25 ha are red. In 2007, Clos Canarelli moved into its new cellar and quickly demonstrated exceptional winemaking talent.
Probably influenced by another famous Corsican winemaker, Jean Charles Abbatucci of Domaine Comte Abbatucci, Yves Canarelli decided to revive old indigenous grape varieties that had almost disappeared in Corsica, such as Minustellu and Carcaghjolu Neru in red, or Bianco Gentile in white. At the same time, he continues to promote traditional local grape varieties such as Sciacarellu and Niellucciu, on his terroir rich in limestone, which is uncommon on the Island of Beauty. In order to remain in the deepest respect for nature and its diversity, Clos Canarelli has been entirely converted to biodynamics. At Clos Canarelli, various trials have been conducted regarding the ageing of wines in barrels, tanks, demi-muids, large casks, and even amphorae. The aim being to showcase the terroir and the pure expression of the grape varieties, as on the pre-phylloxera vine plot of the village of Orasi taken over in 2009 (Terra d'Orasi cuvée), as well as its Amphora cuvées (in red and white) which are aged in large clay amphorae. The white wines are imbued with a deep minerality, an invigorating tension and an elegant floral touch. The red wines present an incredible balance, the ruby colour and silky touch of a great Burgundy, combined with the firm tannins and garrigue notes typical of Corsica. The Corsican white Amphora from Clos Canarelli is generous, full and shimmering, with a spiced and almost mellow finish. The Corsican red Amphora from Clos Canarelli is more refined and easy-drinking, in a style where fruitiness and freshness dominate. The Muscat MPG offers gentle praline flavours with barley sugar. The Biancu Gentile (white) reveals itself full of energy with a remarkable saline finish. The carcaghjolu neru Costa Nera is very distinguished and full of flavour, while the Cuvée Alte Rocca is a very subtle and delicate wine, combining aromatic finesse and freshness. Finally, Tarra Di Sognu is the southernmost vineyard in France, rooted on the limestone plateaux of an old clos replanted in 2010 and overlooking Bonifacio, just a few steps from the sea. The quality of the 2 cuvées produced in this clos seems self-evident, doing justice to the expression of a great limestone terroir: the white is chiselled and saline, with great delicacy of flavour, while the red offers a truly brilliant fruitiness, accompanied by silky and thoroughbred tannins. One is advised to remember the name of Clos Canarelli, for it shines across the Island of Beauty.
