Domaine Ponsot and its exceptional Clos de la Roche

Wines from Domaine Ponsot: purchase at the best price

With 12 Grand Crus to its name, this domaine de Bourgogne of 12 hectares planted on calcareous and clay-limestone soils is farmed like an organic vineyard but prefers to maintain its independence and freedom of operation. Surrounded by prestigious neighbors such as Clos de Tart, Clos des Lambrays and domaine Arlaud, it holds 12 Grand Crus de Bourgogne! Laurent Ponsot, the former director of Domaine Ponsot, shook the wine world by exposing the dishonest practices of a forger in 2008.

The history of Domaine Ponsot

It all began in 1872, when William Ponsot, a member of Dijon’s bourgeoisie and a property owner in Saint-Romain, acquired Clos des Monts-Luisants and a parcel of Clos de la Roche in Morey-Saint-Denis. Hit hard by phylloxera, he had to pull up his vines and replanted his white-wine clos with Aligoté, a grape native to the region, in 1911. Those 1911 vines are still in place. His godson Hippolyte Ponsot succeeded him in 1920, expanded the vineyard and undertook extensive replanting with Pinot Noir, while campaigning for the appellation system that led to the recognition of Morey’s grands crus in 1936.

A pioneer, Hippolyte began bottling his Burgundy wines at the estate in 1921, when the vast majority of the harvest was sold in bulk to négociants. Exports followed in the 1930s, with the 1934 Clos de la Roche becoming the first vintage tasted on American soil. Jean-Marie Ponsot, a passionate geologist, subsequently developed the estate’s approach to soil management and massal selections of Pinot fin, giving rise to clones now planted throughout the Côte de Nuits. The estate also distinguished itself in the fight against counterfeiting, equipping its bottles with traceability features early on. Since 2017, a new team led by Rose-Marie Ponsot has run the estate without departing from the principles established in 1872.

Terroirs and vines of Domaine Ponsot

The heart of the vineyard lies on the slopes of Morey-Saint-Denis, where the estate occupies a prime position between Clos de la Roche and Monts-Luisants, above the village. The thin, clay-rich soils are strewn with limestone scree (stratified grèzes) over white oolite and Dijon-Corton limestone. This combination, together with an eastern exposure that shields the grapes from the afternoon sun, produces wines that are both structured and fresh, with a distinctive saline minerality.

Clos des Monts-Luisants, a one-hectare monopole planted at 11,000 vines per hectare, is a haven of biodiversity, bordered by forest and trained as bush vines. The estate also owns parcels in Chapelle-Chambertin and the Les Epointures lieu-dit in Gevrey, as well as vines in the Côte de Beaune for the house’s cuvées. The vines have a high average age, and a conservation collection of Aligoté and Pinot Noir vine material dating from 1911 was established in 2018 to preserve this genetic heritage, which underpins several of the most coveted Burgundy grands crus.

Winemaking at Domaine Ponsot

The philosophy is one of minimal intervention, underpinned by viticulture that respects the living environment, in the spirit of the Côte’s great biodynamic wines. The grapes are harvested by hand, sorted in the vineyard and traditionally picked late: the estate waits for full phenolic ripeness, even if that means harvesting after its neighbors. Fermentation starts with native yeasts alone in temperature-controlled tanks, with gentle extraction designed to preserve the fruit and the finesse of the tannins.

Aging is the house’s most uncompromising hallmark: no new barrels, ever. The barrels used average around 15 years old, so the wood contributes neither flavor nor disguise, only slow micro-oxygenation. The white wine begins with direct pressing of whole grapes, followed by fermentation in barrel for around 16 months, without systematically seeking malolactic fermentation. The reds rest for 15 to 18 months before bottling with anti-fraud technologies—including bubble seals and contactless chips—that guarantee the authenticity of every bottle.

The cuvées of Domaine Ponsot

Bourgogne Cuvée du Pinson: produced in very small quantities since 2017, it comes from young vines in the Morey-Saint-Denis and Gevrey-Chambertin appellations, declassified to the regional appellation. The wine charms with its crisp fruit, suppleness and easy-drinking appeal, while already showing the house style of freshness and supple tannins.

Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvée de l’Abeille: made from vines replanted in 2014 in the Les Epointures lieu-dit, this cuvée has a ruby color with violet highlights. Its intense nose combines cherry, blackberry, violet and rose. The palate is generous and structured, carried by velvety tannins and true to the fleshy character of Gevrey-Chambertin wines.

Morey-Saint-Denis Cuvée des Grives: from vines planted high on the Monts-Luisants slope at the forest’s edge, it has freshness and tension unusual for this appellation level. The wine combines body, expressive red fruit, a velvety texture and a mineral finish.

Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Clos des Monts-Luisants Monopole: unique in Burgundy, this white premier cru from the Côte de Nuits is made entirely from Aligoté, more than two-thirds of which comes from vines planted in 1911. Produced in a limited run of around 4,500 bottles, it offers aromas of white fruit, citrus, wax and almond, with a chalky, saline palate and impressive longevity. One of the region’s most distinctive and sought-after white wines.

Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Cuvée des Alouettes: lying in the heart of Clos des Monts-Luisants, barely a meter from Clos de la Roche, these vines produce a red of great aromatic complexity. The palate is structured and balanced, with slightly firmer tannins and refreshing acidity that set it apart from its illustrious neighbor.

Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru: this Gevrey grand cru surprises with its elegance and length. Made from well-balanced vines around 40 years old, it offers a delicate nose, fine tannins and remarkable harmony through to a lingering mineral finish. A dependable choice among Chambertin and its grands crus.

Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Cuvée Vieilles Vignes: the estate’s historic, signature wine comes two-thirds from the original Clos de la Roche climat and one-third from old vines lower on the slope in Clos des Monts-Luisants. Power and elegance come together in a complex, profound wine with exceptionally silky tannins. It is an outstanding age-worthy wine capable of lasting several decades.

Saint-Romain Cuvée de la Mésange: a nod to the family’s origins, this Maison Ponsot cuvée comes from the cool slopes of Saint-Romain in the Côte de Beaune. It emphasizes tension, pure fruit and minerality in a precise, approachable style.

Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru: this great white wine from the Corton hill combines power and length, with notes of citrus, ripe white fruit, hazelnut and flint. The dense, vibrant palate needs a few years to reveal its full breadth.

Corton Cuvée du Bourdon: this red grand cru from the hill has a sun-drenched character, with notes of black fruit, licorice and spice. Its generous tannic structure and firm finish make it a classic age-worthy wine, well suited to game dishes and worthy of comparison with the most serious Aloxe-Corton wines.

Corton Bressandes Grand Cru: from one of Corton’s most renowned climats, it is finer and more aromatic than its neighbor, with notes of black cherry, peony and sweet spices. The palate is silky and precise, with lovely freshness on the finish.

The historic cuvées: enthusiasts also seek out bottles produced by the estate from parcels it farmed until the mid-2010s, now available only as older vintages. These include Clos Saint-Denis Cuvée Très Vieilles Vignes, renowned for its legendary, airy finesse; Griotte-Chambertin, with its vivid cherry notes; the powerful, profound Chambertin and Latricières-Chambertin; the broader-textured Clos de Vougeot; and the floral, delicate Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes. These rare bottles, often impossible to find, are the house’s living history and ideally complement a vertical tasting of Clos de la Roche.
