Classified as a Grand Cru in 1855, this historic estate produces wines renowned for their finesse, freshness, and incredible aromatic richness. Its geographical location and unique terroir promote the development of botrytis cinerea, also known as noble rot, giving Château Filhot wines their inimitable sweetness and complexity. With a prestigious history dating back to 1709, the estate is today managed by Gabriel de Vaucelles, a direct descendant of the Filhot family, making it one of the rare châteaux in Bordeaux to remain family-owned for more than three centuries.

History of Château Filhot

The history of Château Filhot began in the first half of the 17th century, when the ancestors of Romain de Filhot laid the foundations of the vineyard. The latter, a councillor in the Parliament of Bordeaux, undertook the construction of the eponymous château in 1709 and adopted the appellation "Sauternes" for his sweet wines, replacing "vin de Langon." After the French Revolution, the estate passed to the Lur-Saluces family, who also owned the celebrated châteaux d'Yquem and de Fargues. In 1840, Romain-Bertrand de Lur-Saluces united the lands of Château Filhot and Pineau du Rey, giving new impetus to the estate's wine production.

In 1855, during the famous classification of growths for the Universal Exhibition in Paris commissioned by Napoleon III, Château Filhot was awarded the rank of second grand cru in the Sauternes appellation. During this period, the estate was also known as "Château Sauternes" for greater international recognition. It was not until 1901 that the original name, Château Filhot, was restored. The tradition continued in the 1930s with the de Vaucelles family, who went on to improve and develop the vineyard. Since 2015, Gabriel de Vaucelles has been managing the estate, maintaining the standards of quality inherited from his ancestors while innovating in production.

Terroirs and Vines of Château Filhot

The 62 hectares of vineyards at Château Filhot extend across the southern slope of the Sauternes hill, benefiting from optimal sunshine and a varied terroir. The soil combines gravel, clay and sand, resting on a limestone subsoil, lending the wine an elegant minerality and refined structure. Bordered by the Landes forest and crossed by the Ciron river, the estate enjoys ideal micro-climatic conditions. This morning humidity encourages the development of noble rot, an essential phenomenon for the production of the great sweet wines of Sauternes.

The vineyard is composed of three noble grape varieties: 60% Sémillon, 36% Sauvignon Blanc and 4% Muscadelle. The Sémillon brings the sweetness and roundness typical of Sauternes, while the Sauvignon Blanc lends freshness and vivacity to the wine. The Muscadelle, in a small proportion, enriches the aromatic profile with floral notes and candied fruits. The vines, with an average age of 37 years, are planted at a density of 6,000 vines per hectare, ensuring optimal concentration of aromas and sugars in each bunch.

Vinification at Château Filhot

Vinification at Château Filhot is a subtle art, combining tradition and innovation. The harvest is carried out manually through successive passes to select bunches affected by noble rot. This meticulous method ensures the quality and consistency of the grapes, although yields remain low, between 10 and 20 hectolitres per hectare, depending on the vintage.

The slowly pressed grapes release delicate musts, which then ferment in 50-hectolitre stainless steel vats at controlled temperature. This fermentation, lasting between 10 and 30 days depending on the grape variety and sugar concentration, is maintained between 19 and 21 °C to preserve the richness of the aromas. After a light filtration, the wines are blended and aged for 20 to 24 months, with 30% of the Allier merrain oak barrels being renewed each year to impart subtle woody and vanilla aromas.

The estate uses modern techniques, with stainless steel vats and rigorous temperature control, ensuring the stability and quality of the wine. This careful approach to vinification results in well-balanced wines of great finesse and fine acidity, the hallmark of the great Sauternes.
