The TOP winemakers of Burgundy

History of Domaine Henri Rebourseau

The estate's history is closely tied to the rise of Burgundy winemaking in the 20th century. Founded by General Henri Rebourseau after World War I, the estate was built from parcels acquired as early as the 18th century. Henri Rebourseau was a pioneer of estate bottling and a founding member of the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin.

For decades, the estate maintained a low profile, jealously guarding its old vines and traditional expertise. In 2018, the Bouygues family's investment helped accelerate technical modernization while respecting its heritage. Today, Jean de Surrel (Henri's grandson) and his sons steward this legacy with renewed dedication, placing the estate among Burgundy's finest wine producers.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Henri Rebourseau

The estate has one of Gevrey-Chambertin's most impressive collections of terroirs, with a unique concentration of Grands Crus and Premiers Crus. Its vineyards cover nearly 13.5 hectares, most of them on Jurassic-era clay-limestone soils.

Vineyard management is now certified organic and biodynamic. This approach aims to strengthen soil life and the vines' resilience. By favoring controlled yields and careful soil management (plowing and cover crops), the estate draws out the mineral essence of each "Climat". The vines' high average age yields grapes with exceptional phenolic concentration, a hallmark of wines built to age.

Winemaking at Domaine Henri Rebourseau

Winemaking at the estate is a quest for balance between the natural power of Gevrey's terroir and the elegance of Pinot Noir. After hand-harvesting and rigorous sorting, the grapes are vinified in a modern winery that remains true to tradition.

Gentle extraction: The estate favors cold pre-fermentation maceration and very restrained punch-downs to extract color and aromas without hardening the tannins.

The art of aging: The wines are aged in French oak barrels for 16 to 18 months. The proportion of new oak is carefully tailored to each cuvée (often kept modest) so that it never obscures the fruit or the expression of the terroir.

Respecting the natural rhythm: Racking is kept to a minimum, and the wines are bottled according to the lunar calendar, often without fining or excessive filtration, to preserve the wine's integrity.

The Cuvées of Domaine Henri Rebourseau

Gevrey-Chambertin "Aux Corvées": A village-level wine of great distinction, from a parcel in the southern part of the appellation. It offers notes of crisp red fruit and a silky structure, making it an ideal introduction to the estate's style.

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "Fonteny": Located very close to the Grands Crus, this terroir produces a wine of great depth. It reveals aromas of black cherry and licorice, along with remarkable mineral tension.

Chambertin Grand Cru: The king of wines. From vines planted in exceptionally pure limestone soil, this wine develops phenomenal power and aromatic complexity (forest floor, sweet spices, faded rose) that deepen with age.

Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru: The estate's parcel lies in the upper part of the Clos, near the château. This is a broad, generous wine with velvety tannins and an exceptionally persistent finish.

Mazy-Chambertin Grand Cru: Often the wildest and most expressive in its youth, it reveals smoky and gamey notes that meld into vibrant fruit after a few years in the cellar.

Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru: A wine of delicacy and elegance that favors textural finesse and floral subtlety over sheer power.
