Wines from Domaine Laurent Roumier: buy at the best price

Based in Chambolle-Musigny, Domaine Laurent Roumier is one of the best-kept secrets of the Côte de Nuits. Grandson of Georges Roumier and son of Alain Roumier, Laurent Roumier founded his own estate in 1991 with four hectares, since expanded to around twelve hectares situated almost exclusively in the village of Chambolle-Musigny. The vineyard, composed of old vines with an average age of thirty-five to forty years, is farmed without chemical fertilisers or herbicides, with a focus on soil aeration. From village Bourgogne to the grand crus Bonnes-Mares and Clos de Vougeot, by way of four little-known premier crus, the range spans nine appellations.

History of Domaine Laurent Roumier

The history of the Roumier family in the Burgundian vineyard goes back to the 1920s, when Georges Roumier founded in Chambolle-Musigny the estate that still bears his name and that would become one of the most mythical addresses on the Côte de Nuits. The family heritage has been passed down from generation to generation, each descendant taking charge of a portion of the vines. Alain Roumier, son of Georges and father of Laurent, served for many years as estate manager, in a tradition of know-how transmitted on the ground rather than from books.

Domaine Laurent Roumier, however, is a much more recent creation. Long associated with his brother, Laurent Roumier struck out on his own in 1991 with four hectares of vines drawn from the family heritage, farmed under lease agreements. He then patiently expanded his estate through successive acquisitions, notably adding three additional hectares a few years ago, bringing the total today to around a dozen hectares. The winemaker has made a deliberate choice: that of discretion. A man of few words, naturally secretive and little inclined toward communication, he lets his bottles speak for him. Where Domaine Georges Roumier reaches the heights of fame and price, Domaine Laurent Roumier remains an address for insiders, which explains a quality-to-price ratio that has become extraordinarily rare for appellations of such prestige. True to the heritage he received, Laurent Roumier applies the same methods as his father and grandfather, without yielding to the sirens of modernity.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Laurent Roumier

Almost the entire vineyard lies within the commune of Chambolle-Musigny, an emblematic village of the Côte de Nuits renowned for producing the finest and most ethereal Pinot Noir in all of Burgundy. The soil is stony, highly calcareous, often poor, with a thin layer of arable earth that forces the vine to root deeply into the rock. It is precisely this constraint that gives the wines of Chambolle their aromatic lacework and characteristic salinity.

The estate comprises approximately 1.3 hectares under the Bourgogne appellation, spread between Chambolle-Musigny and Gilly-lès-Cîteaux, and 4.6 hectares of Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits on the lieu-dit La Poirelotte, situated on the heights of Chambolle, including a 0.71-hectare plot planted with Chardonnay. The heart of the heritage lies in the 2.8 hectares of Chambolle-Musigny village, spread across several ideally exposed plots, some of which adjoin the grand cru Musigny. To this are added four premier crus of extreme rarity, with surface areas measured in ares: 22.5 ares in Les Charmes, 9 ares in Les Noirots, 6.9 ares in Les Gruenchers and 6.5 ares in Les Groseilles. Finally, two grand crus crown the whole: 36.2 ares of Bonnes-Mares and 85.5 ares of Clos de Vougeot. The vines are tended in a traditional manner, without fertilisers or herbicides, and the harvest is carried out entirely by hand.

Winemaking at Domaine Laurent Roumier

Winemaking here follows traditional methods, exactly as Alain Roumier practiced them. The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully sorted before vatting. Notably, the estate does not use cold pre-fermentation maceration, a technique that has nonetheless been widespread in Burgundy since the 1990s. Fermentations start naturally, punctuated by classic punch-downs and pump-overs, with no pursuit of excessive extraction. This deliberately pared-back approach allows the Pinot Noir to express itself in its most natural register.

Ageing then continues in oak barrels for fifteen to eighteen months depending on the cuvée, with a measured and graduated proportion of new wood according to the rank of the appellation. The oak influence is always expertly dosed, never dominant, so as to preserve the finesse and aromatic richness that are characteristic of the Chambolle terroir. The result is wines that are gourmand and approachable in their youth, while retaining a structure and balance that allow them to age over one to two decades. Only the Clos de Vougeot, more massive by nature, sets itself apart through its vigour and firmness.

The Cuvées of Domaine Laurent Roumier

The Bourgogne Rouge opens the range with a Pinot Noir from plots located in Chambolle-Musigny and Gilly-lès-Cîteaux. Crunchy and immediately seductive, it unfolds a clean red fruit profile of cherry and raspberry, supple tannins and a lovely fresh finish. It is one of the finest introductions to the house style, with a substance that far exceeds the usual standard of the regional appellation.

The Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits Rouge, from the lieu-dit La Poirelotte on the heights of Chambolle-Musigny, benefits from an altitude and a freshness that lend it a lovely vivacity. The nose evokes small acidic red fruits and a floral hint, the palate is slender, easy-drinking, with fine tannins and a saline finish. The Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits Blanc, produced from 0.71 hectares of Chardonnay planted on the same plot, is one of the estate's rarities: straight, mineral, with citrus and white flowers, it offers a remarkable chalky tension and a particularly enticing quality-to-price ratio.

The Chambolle-Musigny Village is the true speciality of the house and the cuvée that made its reputation. It blends several plots distributed around the village, planted with vines averaging thirty-five years of age, some of which exceed half a century, on a stony terroir ideally exposed and neighbouring the grand cru Musigny. The result is a wine of rare elegance, with a bouquet of raspberry, rose and undergrowth, a silky texture and an impressive aromatic richness, which can be enjoyed with pleasure from its youth while also supporting ten years of cellaring.

The Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes, the largest of the estate's premier crus at 22.5 ares, is fleshy and immediately charming, with ripe raspberry, peony and a touch of sweet spice, melting tannins and a fresh finish. The Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Noirots, from just 9 ares, plays a deeper and more structured score, marked by dark fruits, white pepper and an assertive minerality that gives it the bearing of a little Bonnes-Mares.

The Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Gruenchers, a minuscule plot of 6.9 ares located close to Les Amoureuses, captivates with its aromatic finesse, its crystalline red fruit and its tannin grain of extreme delicacy. The Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Groseilles, even more confidential with 6.5 ares, develops a crunchy and vibrant profile of redcurrant and fresh cherry, with brilliant acidity and remarkable drinkability. These two cuvées, produced in just a few hundred bottles, rank among the most sought-after of the estate.

The Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru, from 36.2 ares, represents the pinnacle of finesse in the collection. Located at the northern end of Chambolle on the border with Morey-Saint-Denis, this climat combines the power of its neighbour with the lacework of Chambolle. The nose is irresistible, with candied dark fruits, truffle and spice, and the palate unfolds a magical silken texture, dense and thoroughbred, with an exceptional length and a keeping potential that easily exceeds twenty years. Finally, the Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, the estate's largest plot at 85.5 ares, stands apart through a decidedly more massive temperament: deep colour, a bouquet of dark fruits, leather and undergrowth, compact substance and firm tannins that demand a decade of patience before they integrate, yielding a wine of very long ageing potential.
