Domaine Bouchard Père & Fils wines: buy at the best price

This family-run wine house, based in Beaune for nine generations, was founded in 1731. Its first vines were in the Caillerets Premier Cru in Volnay; Domaine Bouchard then gradually acquired other exceptional parcels, including the celebrated Beaune Grèves Vignes de l’Enfant Jésus. Today, Domaine Bouchard spans more than 130 hectares of vines averaging 35 years of age, across prestigious appellations including Corton Charlemagne, Montrachet, Bonnes Mares and Meursault 1er Cru Perrières. Maison Bouchard combines tradition and modernity to produce its exceptional wines, as illustrated by the construction in 2005 of the new Saint Vincent winery in Savigny les Beaune, with ideal conditions for winemaking and aging. Maison Bouchard farms its estate using sustainable methods and obtained Haute Valeur Environnementale certification in 2015.

History of Bouchard Père & Fils

The story begins with Michel Bouchard (1692–1755), a cloth and fabric merchant from the Dauphiné who regularly crossed Burgundy on his way to Flanders. Drawn to the Beaune area and its wines, he added wine trading to his business and settled in Beaune in 1731. His son Joseph became his partner in 1746, then took over the entire business in 1750. In 1775, Joseph Bouchard acquired his first vineyard plots in the Volnay Les Caillerets climat, laying the foundation for the family estate. His son later seized the opportunity presented by the sale of church and noble properties during the Revolution to expand the family’s holdings in Beaune, notably acquiring the Vigne de l’Enfant Jésus parcel in 1791.

In 1820, Bernard Bouchard became the owner of the Château de Beaune, built by Louis XI, and gradually converted its underground galleries and bastions into aging cellars. The headquarters has been on Rue du Château since 1872. These cellars still house a treasure trove of old bottles from the 19th and 20th centuries, the oldest dating to 1846. Nine generations of the Bouchard family succeeded one another before the Henriot family took the reins in 1995 and added new prestigious terroirs to the estate starting in 1996. In 2022, Bouchard Père & Fils joined Artémis Domaines, a group that includes Château Latour and Clos de Tart. Consideration of a transition to organic farming began as early as 2009 and led to certification of all parcels starting with the 2025 vintage. The most emblematic wines are also being progressively brought together under a new entity, Domaine des Cabottes.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Bouchard Père & Fils

The estate-owned vineyards lie mainly within the boundaries of Beaune, Volnay, Monthélie, Pommard, and Meursault, extending toward Aloxe-Corton, Savigny-lès-Beaune, Nuits-Saint-Georges, and the Côte de Nuits. Beaune is the historic heart of the estate: for several generations, the house has been the largest premier cru vineyard owner there, with vines spread across more than twenty climats. Two are wholly owned monopoly vineyards: Clos de la Mousse for red wine, patiently reassembled by the family between 1826 and the end of the 19th century, and Clos Saint-Landry for white wine, an exceptional rarity in an almost exclusively red-wine appellation.

The soils combine clay, limestone, and marl in varying proportions across the parcels, on east- and southeast-facing hillsides that offer optimal sunlight and natural drainage. Volnay Les Caillerets, the first terroir acquired by the family, takes its name from the small limestone stones known as chailles: its more limestone-rich upper section brings finesse and mineral tension, while the clay-rich midslope gives depth and concentration. Vigne de l’Enfant Jésus occupies nearly four hectares at the heart of the Beaune Les Grèves premier cru, one of the climats that Dr. Lavalle ranked among the finest vineyard sites in the 19th century, alongside Volnay Caillerets, Pommard Rugiens, and Meursault Perrières. Pinot Noir accounts for the great majority of the plantings, complemented by Chardonnay in Meursault, Beaune, and the white grand cru vineyards.

Winemaking at Bouchard Père & Fils

The grapes are always harvested by hand and transported in small, twelve-kilogram crates to prevent the bunches from being crushed. On arrival at the winery, rigorous sorting removes any unwanted material. Each climat is vinified separately, preserving the character of each terroir before any blending: for Beaune du Château alone, seventeen climats are tracked individually for the red wine and four for the white. The modernized winery now has approximately 140 tanks, not to produce more wine, but to vinify it with greater precision.

For the whites, pressing takes place in two stages: the first juice is drawn off, followed by a two-hour cycle of pressing, depending on the vintage. The wines are then aged in French oak barrels for approximately nine to ten months, with a deliberately restrained proportion of new oak, often less than 15%, followed by three to four months in stainless steel tanks to preserve freshness and tension before bottling. The reds undergo longer aging, depending on the cru. All aging takes place in the cellars within the bastions of the former Château de Beaune, about ten meters underground, where constant humidity and temperature provide ideal conditions for the premier and grand cru wines to develop.

The Wines of Bouchard Père & Fils

Bourgogne Pinot Noir opens the range with straightforward cherry and strawberry fruit, supple tannins, and easy drinkability. Bourgogne Chardonnay offers floral freshness and citrus, with a clean texture and subtle oak. Bourgogne Aligoté rounds out the entry-level range: lively, lemony, and saline, it is ideal as an aperitif.

Among the red village appellations, Aloxe-Corton is fleshy and spicy, marked by black fruit and firm structure. Village-level Beaune offers a supple, fragrant Pinot Noir with red fruit and a hint of forest floor. Monthélie charms with its slender elegance and crisp fruit, in a style close to Volnay. Pommard brings density and earthy character, with a solid tannic framework. Savigny-lès-Beaune combines appealing richness, raspberry notes, and refreshing liveliness.

Among the village-level whites, Beaune blanc surprises with its rarity and finesse, offering white fruit and chalky minerality. Meursault displays the buttery roundness and hazelnut notes characteristic of the village, balanced by fine acidity. Meursault Les Clous, from a named site high on the hillside, stands out for its greater tension and precision. The rarely seen Monthélie blanc offers a taut Chardonnay with notes of green apple and flint.

Beaune 1er Cru Beaune du Château rouge is a house exclusive produced every year since 1907. A blend of several premier cru climats selected for their complementary qualities, it brings together the different facets of Beaune’s terroir in a single wine, with notes of cherry and spice and a long finish. The equally exclusive Beaune 1er Cru Beaune du Château blanc comes from parcels including Les Aigrots, Les Sizies, Sur les Grèves, Les Teurons, and Les Tuvilains, covering nearly ten hectares of soils combining clay, limestone, and marl. It has a pale gold color with green highlights, aromas of white-fleshed fruit, candied citrus, and gingerbread, and a rich yet subtle palate with notes of dried fruit.

Beaune 1er Cru Grèves Vigne de l’Enfant Jésus is the house’s most famous wine, an exclusive bottling from a parcel of nearly four hectares at the heart of the Grèves climat, acquired in 1791. It combines power, finesse, and remarkable aging potential, with a bouquet of ripe red fruit, violet, and sweet spice, a velvety texture, and a magnificent finish.

Beaune 1er Cru Clos de la Mousse is a historic monopoly vineyard on a level terrace where a layer of limestone covers a bed of dense clay. The result is a wine of particular elegance, softer and more ethereal than Vigne de l’Enfant Jésus, with delicate red fruit and a refined mineral finish.

Beaune 1er Cru Clos Saint-Landry is the house’s second monopoly vineyard and one of the very few white-wine clos in the Beaune appellation. A generous, vibrant Chardonnay, it combines white fruit and acacia blossom with a delicate salinity that carries through the finish.

Beaune 1er Cru Les Grèves expresses the generosity of its climat in a broader, fleshy, fruit-forward blend. Beaune 1er Cru Les Marconnets, near the Savigny border, is firmer and spicier, built for aging. Beaune 1er Cru Clos du Roi combines structure and distinction, with black fruit and tightly knit minerality. Beaune 1er Cru Les Avaux charms with its roundness and suppleness, making it more approachable in its youth. Beaune 1er Cru Les Teurons completes the collection with a well-rounded profile, balancing body and freshness.

In Volnay, Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets Ancienne Cuvée Carnot holds a special place: its three-hectare parcel, acquired as early as 1775, is the birthplace of the family’s winegrowing heritage. The wine captivates with its deep color and violet highlights, a floral bouquet of violet and peony mingled with candied red fruit, mineral finesse, and remarkable balance.

Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes, planted high on the hillside, yields a taut, mineral, distinguished wine that needs a few years in the cellar. Volnay 1er Cru En Chevret is more delicate and fragrant, with a floral character typical of Volnay. Volnay 1er Cru Frémiets Clos de la Rougeotte combines fleshiness and firmness, with fine tannic structure and impressive fruit depth.

In Pommard, Pommard 1er Cru blends several climats to create a dense, generous wine. Pommard 1er Cru Les Pézerolles embodies the appellation’s most elegant side, with softened tannins and a refined bouquet. From its iron-rich soils, Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens offers the most powerful and profound expression, with considerable aging potential.

Monthélie 1er Cru Les Duresses offers a lively, fresh Pinot Noir with notes of small red berries and a saline finish. Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Lavières emphasizes suppleness and fragrance. Farther north, Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Porrets-Saint-Georges brings the vigor and structure characteristic of Nuits-Saint-Georges, with black fruit, licorice, and a dense tannic framework.

Among the premier cru whites, Meursault 1er Cru Les Bouchères combines richness and finesse, with yellow fruit and a hint of smoke. Meursault 1er Cru Les Gouttes d’Or stands out for its controlled opulence and notes of honey and candied fruit. Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières, considered the village’s finest climat, offers stony minerality and a finish worthy of a grand cru. Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières completes the trio with its floral softness and silky length.

Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières displays an ethereal elegance, with citrus, white blossom, and exceptionally pure chalky minerality. The white Chassagne-Montrachet brings greater roundness and richness, with notes of pear and almond.

Among the red grands crus, Le Corton is the only red grand cru in the Côte de Beaune: powerful and structured, it develops notes of forest floor, leather, and truffle. Clos Vougeot Grand Cru combines breadth and mineral depth with a noble structure. Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru brings Chambolle’s density and elegant wildness, while Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru and Échezeaux Grand Cru embody the aromatic finesse and sensuality of Vosne-Romanée. Chambertin Grand Cru completes the collection with its imposing stature and legendary longevity.

Among the white grands crus, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru delivers intense minerality and powerful structure, with candied citrus and honey and exceptional aging potential. Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru La Cabotte, a house exclusive from a grand cru in which the house is also the largest landowner, combines crystalline finesse, focused tension, and extraordinary length. Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru offers a fuller, more opulent palate balanced by delicate salinity. Finally, Montrachet Grand Cru represents the pinnacle of the range: exceptional fullness, complexity, and length, with ripe white fruit, spice, flowers, and stony notes unfolding together over decades.
