The Robert Michel estate: Cornas collector's wines
Robert MICHEL was an iconic figure of Northern Rhône, of the generation of Auguste Clape, Marcel Juge and Alain Voge, and it can be said that he considerably shaped the Cornas appellation (Rhône rouge). Robert Michel transformed all his finest syrah juices into sumptuous collector's bottles. Despite the fact that the Robert Michel estate has no longer been in operation since 2006, his great Cornas wines continue to be coveted by great enthusiasts and collectors. One must acknowledge the merits of such wines of incredible purity, sincere crus that perfectly express the typicity of the granitic terroirs of Cornas. In 2006 Robert Michel transferred part of his vines to his nephew, Vincent Paris, and the other part to Guillaume Gilles.

Domaine Robert Michel then extended over 4.5 hectares spread across the Chaillot quarter where it produced its "Coteaux" cuvée, quite supple, which could be drunk fairly young. The other part was located at the extreme south of the Reynard quarter, the source of a cuvée of immense scale and international class: "La Geynale," whose soils are often very poor, on the edge of cultivability. The reality is that most often, the best vintages come from regions where the vine suffers most. Worked in terraces, the vines face southeast on granite. Nearby, La Roche Pertuis and its limestone soils bring finesse and elegance to the estate's vintages. Robert Michel's Cornas wines were often austere in their youth, with an austere structure and sometimes quite closed noses for many years. But great Cornas wines know how to age perfectly and make you wait, before finally revealing the depth and true dimension of this vintage, for the happiness of the most patient. After the necessary cellaring time, it is the full expression of Syrah that takes on its true dimension here, almost wild. The wines are very expressive, offering a complex range of scents such as raspberry and blackcurrant, violet and rose, olive and meaty notes. Spicy notes are also present with touches of ground black and white pepper, and licorice. On the palate, the balance is simply incredible between verticality and an almost syrupy body, rather typical of Cornas. It is worth recalling that Cornas wines are undoubtedly the most exuberant in the region. Finally, the finesse of touch and quality of tannins are the signature of Domaine Robert Michel's Cornas, and have contributed to definitively establishing its typicity as well as its incredible reputation. If the magic of great Cornas is within your reach, it would be a shame not to seize the opportunity to access the Holy Grail.
