The Domaine Robert Michel then covered 4.5 hectares spread across the Chaillot district, where it produced its "Coteaux" cuvée, quite supple and drinkable relatively young. The other part was located at the far south of the Reynard district, the origin of a cuvée of immense scope and international class: "La Geynale," whose soils are often very poor, on the edge of what is cultivable. The reality is that, most often, the finest wines come from regions where the vine suffers the most. Cultivated in terraces, the vines face south-east on granite soils. Nearby, La Roche Pertuis and its calcareous soils bring finesse and elegance to the estate's wines. The Cornas wines of Robert Michel were often austere in their youth, with a stern structure and sometimes rather closed noses for many years. But the great Cornas wines know perfectly well how to age and make you wait, before finally revealing the depth and true dimension of this cru, to the delight of the most patient. After the necessary cellaring time, it is the full expression of the syrah that takes on its true — almost wild — dimension here. The wines are highly expressive, offering a complex array of aromas such as raspberry and blackcurrant, violet and rose, olive and meaty notes. Spiced notes are also present, with touches of ground black and white pepper, and liquorice. On the palate, the balance is simply incredible between the verticality and an almost sweetness of the body, rather typical of Cornas. It is worth recalling that the wines of Cornas are unquestionably the most exuberant in the region. Finally, the finesse of the texture and the quality of the tannins are the hallmarks of the Cornas wines from Domaine Robert Michel, and have contributed to definitively establishing their typicity as well as their incredible renown.
