Morey Saint Denis

All wines from the Morey Saint Denis appellation in Burgundy

The village of Morey Saint Denis, in the Burgundy Côte de Nuits between Gevrey-Chambertin to the north and Chambolle-Musigny to the south, produces red wines from Pinot Noir. Four Grands Crus are located here: Clos de la Roche, Clos St Denis, Clos des Lambrays and Clos de Tart. The last two are the most highly regarded of the four, and each is a monopole. Lighter than Gevrey-Chambertin wines and more tannic than Chambolle-Musigny wines, Morey wines are nevertheless powerful and robust, with good acidity and notes of blackcurrant, spice and truffle. Discover all the producers of Morey Saint Denis: Domaine Arlaud, Bruno Clair, Cécile Tremblay, Domaine des Lambrays, Dujac, Faiveley, Georges Roumier, Hubert Lignier, Méo Camuzet and more…

Where is the Morey-Saint-Denis appellation located?

The appellation lies in the Côte-d’Or department, in the village of Morey-Saint-Denis, at the heart of Burgundy’s Côte de Nuits vineyards. It occupies a stretch of the Route des Grands Crus between Gevrey-Chambertin to the north and Chambolle-Musigny and then Vougeot to the south, about twelve kilometers from Dijon and five kilometers from Nuits-Saint-Georges. The vineyards extend from 240 to 360 meters in elevation on an east-facing hillside warmed by the early morning sun. The slope is cut through its center by the Combe de Morey, a dry valley with a cooler microclimate whose outlet formed a stony alluvial fan.

The vineyard area is among the smallest in the Côte de Nuits: according to industry figures, about 88 hectares are devoted to red wine, including nearly 40 hectares classified as premier cru, and just under 6 hectares to white, for average annual production of around 4,000 hectoliters. On the same hillside, the village appellation is joined by some 30 hectares of grands crus, each with its own appellation: Clos de la Roche, Clos Saint-Denis, Clos des Lambrays, Clos de Tart and part of Bonnes-Mares, most of which lies in Chambolle-Musigny. Lower down, between the D974 and the railroad, the plots fall under regional appellations.

History of the Morey-Saint-Denis appellation

The history of these vineyards is inseparable from that of their medieval monastic clos. Clos Saint-Denis was established in the 11th century by the canons of Saint-Denis de Vergy; Clos de Tart takes its name from the Bernardine nuns of Notre-Dame de Tart Abbey, who acquired it in 1141; and the origins of Clos des Lambrays are traditionally traced to the 14th century. In 1120, Savaric de Vergy gave part of his lordship of Morey to Cîteaux Abbey. The Revolution dispersed these properties through sales as national assets, and the Civil Code subsequently accelerated the fragmentation of vineyard holdings, a defining feature of Burgundy wine country.

Until the 20th century, however, Morey’s wines remained little known: wine merchants in Nuits and Beaune bought them for blending and sold them under the Gevrey or Chambolle names. The turning point came in 1927, when the village added the name of its most famous cru to its own and became Morey-Saint-Denis. Then, on December 8, 1936, a decree granted it appellation d’origine contrôlée status, alongside the grands crus Clos Saint-Denis and Clos de la Roche. Clos de Tart gained grand cru status in 1939, the premiers crus were designated in the following years, and Clos des Lambrays was promoted to grand cru in 1981. The current appellation specifications were approved by decree on December 6, 2011. In recent decades, the appellation has attracted major investors: LVMH acquired Domaine des Lambrays in 2014, and the Pinault family’s Artémis group bought Clos de Tart in 2017.

What are the terroirs of the Morey-Saint-Denis appellation?

The terroirs rest on a patchwork of Middle Jurassic limestones deposited during the Bajocian and Bathonian ages, then fractured by north–south faults as the Bresse Graben subsided. White oolite and the hard, gray-beige Prémeaux limestone emerge at the top of the hillside. The grand cru belt lies mainly on crinoidal limestone, a massive ocher-colored layer running from Gevrey to Chambolle. The northern premiers crus (Aux Charmes, Aux Cheseaux, Clos des Ormes) sit on Comblanchien limestone; those in the center (Les Faconnières, Les Millandes, La Riotte, Les Blanchards, Clos Baulet) lie on the stony deposits of the combe’s alluvial fan; and those to the south (Les Sorbès, Les Ruchots, Clos de la Bussière) rest on pearly limestone and iron-rich oolite. Lower down, Bresse marls and clay-rich colluvial deposits create deeper soils.

This layout explains the hierarchy of the crus: the upper slopes have shallow, stony, well-drained soils that limit vine growth and concentrate the grapes, while the more clay-rich climats lower down produce softer wines for the village appellation. Twenty climats are classified as premier cru, including four high on the slope: Monts Luisants, Les Genavrières, Les Chaffots and Côte Rôtie. Burgundy’s temperate oceanic climate, with continental influences, brings pronounced temperature swings that preserve Pinot Noir’s aromatic freshness.

Which grape varieties are permitted in the Morey-Saint-Denis appellation?

The appellation specifications designate Pinot Noir as the principal red-wine grape; it may be supplemented by up to 15% Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc or Pinot Gris. In practice, nearly all wines are made entirely from Pinot Noir. This variety, with its small conical clusters and dark blue berries, readily accumulates sugar and produces deeply colored, structured wines suited to aging, with moderate tannins. It requires meticulous vineyard work, however, because it is susceptible to downy mildew and gray rot.

For whites, Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc are permitted, along with a variety distinctive to these vineyards: Aligoté is allowed in the Monts Luisants climat alone, a historic legacy that has become a sought-after curiosity among wine lovers. Chardonnay lends richness, body and notes of white flowers and almond; Pinot Blanc contributes subtle roundness; and Aligoté brings saline tension and liveliness, allowing these wines to age far longer than is usually expected of the variety.

What are the different styles of Morey-Saint-Denis wines?

These wines are overwhelmingly red, with whites accounting for just a few percent of the harvest. The reds range from ruby to garnet in color, with a bouquet of black fruits (blackcurrant, blackberry, blueberry) and red stone fruits, often accented by sloe, violet, jasmine or licorice. With age, tasting reveals notes of fruit preserved in brandy, leather and game. The palate is powerful for a red Burgundy, tannic without harshness, with a dense texture reminiscent of Gevrey-Chambertin while retaining Chambolle-Musigny’s fine grain. The rare whites are opulent and floral, with an appealing, lingering mineral finish.

Winemaking remains traditional: sorting the harvest, full or partial destemming depending on the producer (some ferment whole clusters), several days of maceration, extraction by punch-downs or pump-overs, then twelve to twenty-four months of aging in 228-liter Burgundy barrels, with a more restrained proportion of new oak today than twenty years ago. The whites are aged on their lees with stirring. As for food pairings, these bottles call for hearty, flavorful dishes: game birds or venison, grilled rib steak, leg of lamb, beef bourguignon, rabbit stew, coq au vin and robust washed-rind cheeses such as Époisses, Langres or Ami du Chambertin. Serve at 13–15°C.

What are the best Morey-Saint-Denis vintages?

The benchmark vintages of the past thirty years broadly follow the Côte de Nuits hierarchy. Among the great years, 1999 stands out for its generosity and balance; 2002 for its classic freshness; 2005 for its tannic density and exceptional longevity; 2009 for its immediate charm; and 2010 for its precision and tension. Then come 2015 for its sun-driven concentration; 2016 for the finesse of a harvest made tiny by spring frost; 2019 and 2020 for combining ripeness with freshness; and 2022 for the generosity of a well-balanced warm year. The 2003 vintage, marked by a heat wave and a harvest earlier than any seen in centuries, produced atypical, rich wines that should be drunk soon.

Other years have proved less impressive or simply lighter in style: 2000, 2004, 2007, 2011 and 2013 suffered from uneven weather conditions and produced wines to drink now, while 2021, diminished by frost and then a cool growing season, yielded light, easy-drinking wines that are often delicious in the hands of the best growers. To drink now, look to 2011, 2013, 2014, 2017 and 2021, as well as 2009 wines that have reached maturity. For the cellar, favor 2015, 2016, 2019, 2020 and 2022, which still need several years of patience, particularly at premier cru level.

What are the best estates in the Morey-Saint-Denis appellation?

The most sought-after producers in this appellation rank among the most highly prized names in all of Burgundy. Domaine Ponsot, founded in 1872 and one of the first on the Côte to bottle its wines at the estate, beginning in 1934, remains an undisputed benchmark: native yeasts, old barrels, minimal intervention and earthy wines of great longevity. Its wines include Clos de la Roche Cuvée Vieilles Vignes, Clos Saint-Denis Cuvée Très Vieilles Vignes and, among its whites, the single-vineyard Clos des Monts Luisants made from Aligoté, a cult curiosity of the region. Domaine Dujac, founded by Jacques Seysses in 1968 and now run by his sons, established the whole-cluster style in the Côte de Nuits. Its airy, spicy Clos de la Roche and Clos Saint-Denis, with their exceptional aromatic purity, are among the bottles most fiercely sought by collectors, as are its premiers crus from the appellation.

Clos de Tart holds a place of its own: this grand cru, a single-owner vineyard held by the Bernardine nuns from 1141, owned by the Mommessin family from 1932 to 2017 and then acquired by the Pinault family’s Artémis group, produces a wine of remarkable consistency, alongside the La Forge de Tart premier cru from neighboring plots. Domaine des Lambrays, acquired by LVMH in 2014, owns almost all of Clos des Lambrays and cultivates a floral, graceful style marked by extensive use of whole clusters. Domaine Georges Roumier, based in Chambolle-Musigny, is the sole owner of the Clos de la Bussière premier cru, one of the appellation’s hardest wines to find; its firm structure and deep black-fruit character benefit greatly from long aging.

A few family estates round out the picture for wine lovers seeking the same high standards from less widely known producers. Domaine Hubert Lignier, whose old-vine wine and Les Chaffots premier cru are regarded as benchmarks, makes focused, spicy, precise wines. Domaine Perrot-Minot, run by Christophe Perrot-Minot, relies on old vines, very low yields and restrained oak to produce finely crafted wines such as La Riotte, regularly praised by international critics. Domaine Arlaud, based in Morey-Saint-Denis itself, tends its soils carefully and produces premiers crus and a Clos de la Roche with exceptionally clear fruit expression. Finally, Domaine Taupenot-Merme, which owns a historic plot within Clos des Lambrays, and Domaine Castagnier, lower-profile but remarkably consistent with the village’s grands crus, offer excellent introductions to the style of these wines.

How long can you cellar a Morey-Saint-Denis wine?

These are among Burgundy’s age-worthy red wines, with aging potential that varies considerably by appellation level. A village wine is generally ready to drink five to twelve years after harvest, and up to fifteen years in great vintages. A premier cru usually calls for eight to ten years of patience and is best enjoyed between ten and twenty years of age; wines from the finest years can readily exceed twenty-five years. The village’s grands crus come into their own between fifteen and thirty years, sometimes later at the most traditional estates. The whites are best enjoyed younger, between three and eight years, with the notable exception of wines from Monts Luisants, whose saline structure allows them to age much longer.

Proper storage calls for a stable cellar at 11–14°C, dark and free from vibration, with humidity around 70% and bottles stored on their sides to keep the corks moist. On opening, decanting for thirty minutes to an hour helps aerate young or still-closed vintages, particularly the premiers crus. For bottles over fifteen years old, opt for gentle decanting just before serving, solely to separate the sediment, as these mature wines quickly lose their bouquet when exposed to air.
