History of Domaine Rossignol-Trapet

The estate’s history is the story of two Burgundian winemaking traditions coming together. The Rossignol family is part of a long line of winegrowers in Volnay, in the Côte de Beaune. The Trapet family, originally from Chambolle-Musigny, settled in Gevrey-Chambertin more than a century ago. A carefully preserved photograph from 1910 shows wines from the 1909 harvest being collected by a Beaune wine merchant, with Louis Trapet, born in 1846, his great-grandson Louis Trapet, born in 1904, and Arthur Trapet, born in 1872, in the front row: four generations of one family captured in a single image.

The connection between the two houses began in 1961, when Jacques Rossignol married Mado Trapet, daughter of Louis Trapet, and the couple joined Domaine Louis Trapet. That enterprise continued through the 1989 vintage. In 1990, the division of the vineyards created two separate estates: Domaine Rossignol-Trapet and Domaine Jean et Jean-Louis Trapet. Nicolas and David Rossignol then took over from their parents and quickly established themselves as committed advocates of minimal intervention. They converted their first plot to biodynamic farming in 1997, extended the approach to the entire vineyard in 2004, and obtained certification a few years later. Their philosophy of working as naturally as possible, from vine to bottle, produces elegant, refined wines true to their terroirs of origin.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Rossignol-Trapet

Most of the vineyard is concentrated in Gevrey-Chambertin, the Côte d’Or’s largest red-wine village, with 550 hectares of vines. Its brown clay-limestone soils are interspersed with alluvial fans and limestone scree that vary considerably from one climat to another. This diversity allows the estate to present a veritable anthology of the appellation: village plots north and south of the village, five premiers crus around the grands crus, and three emblematic grands crus along the Route des Grands Crus.

The Chambertin plot is the jewel of the estate: it forms a single contiguous parcel, with rows stretching from the bottom to the top of the climat, and includes vines dating back to 1919. Latricières-Chambertin, higher on the slope and cooler, and Chapelle-Chambertin, on shallower soils, offer two strikingly different expressions of Gevrey terroir. The estate also owns several plots in the Côte de Beaune, in Beaune and Savigny-lès-Beaune, inherited from the Rossignol side of the family. The approximately 13-hectare vineyard is planted almost exclusively with Pinot Noir. All the vines are farmed biodynamically, with soil cultivation, natural preparations, and constant attention to soil life.

Winemaking at Domaine Rossignol-Trapet

The grapes are harvested entirely by hand, then rigorously sorted. Depending on the vintage and appellation, between 50% and 100% of the crop is destemmed; some whole clusters are retained when the stems are sufficiently ripe, adding aromatic complexity and freshness. Fermentations begin using only native yeasts after a cold pre-fermentation maceration, and extraction is deliberately gentle, without excessive punch-downs.

Aging is then tailored to the ranking of each cru: around 10% new barrels for village appellations, 25% for premiers crus, and up to 50% for grands crus. This progression allows the oak to support the wine without ever dominating it. The wines rest in the cellar for twelve to eighteen months before bottling with minimal intervention. The resulting style is deliberately classic: wines that can be slightly reserved in their youth but have fine structure, great purity of fruit, and remarkable aging potential, even in vintages considered less spectacular.

The cuvées of Domaine Rossignol-Trapet

Bourgogne Rouge opens the range with a vibrant, easy-drinking Pinot Noir showing cherry and raspberry, supple tannins, and immediate appeal. It already reflects the house style: pure fruit, freshness, and no heaviness whatsoever. Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Bas Liards, from the stony soils of the Côte de Beaune, offers an energetic, saline wine marked by tart red fruit, pepper, and a hint of garrigue, with particularly attractive value for money.

Beaune Les Mariages expresses Beaune’s characteristic roundness and generous appeal, with ripe fruit, supple tannins, and a fresh finish. Beaune 1er Cru Les Teurons, high on the hill with an east-southeast exposure, gains markedly in depth and definition: a bouquet of dark fruit and sweet spices, a dense palate, a mineral backbone, and remarkable length, with aging potential of ten to fifteen years.

In Gevrey-Chambertin, Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes is the estate’s signature cuvée. It blends fruit from old-vine plots in three distinct locations north and south of the village, bringing concentration and balance. The result is a village wine of unusual density, with morello cherry, licorice, and undergrowth, fine tannic structure, and a long finish. Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Etelois, a single-plot cuvée situated immediately beside the grands crus, stands out for its more pronounced minerality, crystalline dark fruit, and an elegance that already hints at the higher-ranked crus.

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Prieur, planted just above Chapelle-Chambertin, combines power and refinement, with a bouquet of dark fruit, leather, and spice, and firm tannins that call for a few years of patience. Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Petite Chapelle, directly beside the grand cru Chapelle-Chambertin, is more charming and floral, with rose and raspberry, a silky texture, and a saline finish. Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cherbaudes, situated below Mazis-Chambertin, offers a compact palate and impressive mineral depth, marked by crushed stone and purple fruit.

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Corbeaux, one of the finest climats in the south of the appellation, develops intense dark fruit, notes of undergrowth, and an exceptionally fine tannic backbone, with aging potential of fifteen to twenty years. Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes, a rare enclave between Latricières-Chambertin and Clos de la Roche, benefits from exceptional neighbors: this wine combines Gevrey’s structure with the aromatic finesse of Morey-Saint-Denis, offering floral and spicy notes and remarkable length.

Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru charms with its airy elegance and floral delicacy, offering violet and small red berries, silky tannins, and a finish of great purity. Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru, planted higher on the slope in cooler soils, strikes a tauter, more mineral note, with vibrant salinity, hints of dark fruit, menthol, and spice, and a tannic architecture that unfolds beautifully after a decade. Finally, Chambertin Grand Cru reigns supreme at the top of the range: from a single contiguous plot with some vines dating back to 1919, it combines impressive aromatic depth, a bouquet of preserved dark fruit, truffle, leather, and undergrowth, a dense, commanding palate, distinguished tannins, and seemingly endless persistence, with aging potential that easily exceeds twenty-five to thirty years.
