Marie et Pierre Benetière wines in Condrieu in the Rhône: an ultra-confidential and highly refined production
Based in Condrieu, the Domaine Marie et Pierre Bénetière is one of those addresses known only to insiders. With fewer than three hectares of vines spread between Côte-Rôtie and Condrieu, production remains ultra-confidential, in the order of ten thousand bottles per year. Pierre Bénetière personally planted his entire vineyard, selecting his own rootstocks and massal selections on steep terraces overlooking the Rhône where any mechanisation is impossible. A committed traditionalist, in the lineage of Gentaz-Dervieux, Trollat, Verset and Allemand, he has been farming organically since 2003, vinifies with whole clusters using only indigenous yeasts, and only releases his wines when they are ready to drink.
Present since the late 1980s, the Benetière estate was created by replanting vines on a beautiful 1.5-hectare plot located in the southern part of the Côte Rôtie AOC, in the lieu-dit Les Cordeloux. The plot faces south-east, and the grapes benefit from ideal exposure for optimal ripening. The Marie et Pierre Benetière estate then acquired a tiny plot of old vines in Côte Brune, at the heart of the vineyard of the famous "La Turque" from Guigal. Marie et Pierre Benetière also acquired a few small plots in Condrieu. All the vine terraces are situated on steep hillsides overlooking the Rhône, with no mechanization possible, and no herbicides are used here. Marie et Pierre Benetière has been farming organically since 2003, without seeking certification. In the cellar, the grapes are not destemmed and ferment gently on indigenous yeasts, before being aged for 18 to 22 months in barrels, with a maximum of 15 to 20% new oak. Depending on the character and generosity of the vintages, the Marie et Pierre Benetière estate produces only 3 or 4 cuvées, such as Dolium, which comes from a single barrel and is produced only in the finest years. These old vines, situated in the middle of Guigal's La Turque vineyard, yield a highly distinguished and almost impossible-to-find nectar. The main strength of the Benetière estate, beyond its motto "small is beautiful," is to produce particularly elegant wines of rare purity, and the Syrah Cordeloux cuvée (Vin de France) is here to testify to that. Produced as a Vin de France for the 2015 and 2016 vintages (it appears there was a slight administrative delay during the harvest declaration for one of the vintages), this wine is characterized by superb aromatic intensity, a structure of great finesse, and extremely polished tannins, bringing to mind a fine red Burgundy. This Syrah presents itself in a ruby robe marked by violet highlights, and the nose is a true festival of notes of dark fruits, flowers such as violet, pepper, soft spices, and leather accents, echoing the rather typical aromas of the finest Syrahs from the Northern Rhône. Since Marie et Pierre Benetière does not present their wines at trade fairs or to the professional press, the chance of coming across wines from the Benetière estate is quite slim, unless through a highly knowledgeable wine merchant or a long-time enthusiast. An estate to discover for the very "haute couture" sensibility of this tiny production.
