Marie et Pierre Bénetière

Although present since the late 1980s, Domaine Benetière was established by replanting vines on a beautiful 1.5-hectare parcel located in the south of the Côte Rôtie AOC, in the lieu-dit Les Cordeloux. The parcel's orientation faces southeast, and the grapes are ideally exposed to ripen perfectly. Subsequently, Domaine Marie et Pierre Benetière acquired a tiny parcel of old vines in Côte Brune, at the heart of the vineyard of the famous "Turque" from Guigal. Marie et Pierre Benetière also acquired several small parcels in Condrieu. The vineyard terraces are all situated on steep slopes overlooking the Rhône, with no possibility of mechanization, and no herbicides are used here. Marie et Pierre Benetière has been working organically since 2003, without seeking certification, however. In the cellar, the grapes are not destemmed and ferment "gently" on indigenous yeasts, before being aged for 18 to 22 months in barrels, with a maximum of 15 to 20% new wood. Depending on the character and generosity of the vintages, Domaine Marie et Pierre Benetière produces only 3 or 4 cuvées, such as Dolium, which comes from a single barrel and is only produced in the best years. These old vines, located in the middle of Guigal's La Turque vineyard, yield a very refined and virtually unobtainable nectar. The main asset of Domaine Benetière, beyond the motto "small is beautiful," is the production of particularly elegant wines of rare purity, and the Syrah Cordeloux cuvée (Vin de France) is here to testify to this. Produced as Vin de France for the 2015 and 2016 vintages (it appears there was a slight administrative delay in declaring the vintage harvest), this wine is characterized by superb aromatic intensity, a structure of great finesse, and extremely polished tannins, somewhat reminiscent of a beautiful red Burgundy. This Syrah presents itself in a ruby robe marked by violet reflections, and the nose is a true festival of notes of black fruits, flowers such as violet, pepper, sweet spices, and hints of leather, thus capturing the fairly typical aromas of beautiful Syrahs from the Northern Rhône. As Marie et Pierre Benetière does not present their wines at trade shows or to the professional press, the chance of encountering wines from Domaine Benetière is rather slim, except through a very knowledgeable wine merchant or thanks to a long-time enthusiast.
